What was your 1st Criterion
Seeing as we have the "how many do you have" thread, I thought it's be fun to see what your first one was and when you got it.
Mine: Carnival of Souls, got it in '00. |
Chasing Amy
Silence of the Lambs
Life of Brian was my first. I was a big Python nut back in 2000, and it was the only special edition around.
Wow, that is a complete blast from the past. I can't remember the first one because it was too long ago, but I know some of the first Criterions I bought were The Killer, Seven Samurai and Amarcord and The Seventh Seal.
Hmm, that's a hard one to remember. I think it was Robocop.

My first Criterion (I believe) was Monty Python and the Holy Grail on laserdisc.
My first Criterion DVD was Armageddon |
The Graduate LD. I think it was in 1992.
My first was The Rock. Nice story behind it too, it was my first DVD lot that I got on Ebay, a 40 DVD lot where the average broke out to be only $4 a piece. Of the titles, 34 were great ones that I have kept and the other 6 I have simce sold and for better than the $4 a piece. The Rock was just listed and there was no picture hence I had no idea it was the Criterion version, yet alone at the time(about 16 months ago when I got my first DVD player) I had no idea what the Criterion Collection was. Quite a find and in mint condition like the rest of the lot.
yup...this has been asked before. a few times. same answer....Robocop and I had it a few weeks before I even bought a player.:D
it was my first dvd...period. |
Chasing Amy
I believe it was in 02. |
Also my first DVD... Seven Samurai
this is spinal tap 1998
This is Spinal Tap. Didn't even know what the Criterion Collection was. Shows the importance of having some more mainstream films in the collection.
Robocop in '98? or whenever it first came out. Cost me $39.99 brand new back then...
The Passion of Joan of Arc. I only wanted a DVD player for Star Wars and Star Trek, thank goodness for DVD forums opening my eyes.
Still don't have a lot of them, and I've only ever sold off one (Fishing With John, just too damned weird, probably should have given it another shot) |
Chasing Amy
Chasing Amy....back when I first started the VHS-to-DVD transformation of my collection in late 2000.
Chasing Amy, back when it came out in 2000.
Rob |
Robocop.
Rushmore....before I knew what a Criterion was. It was in that infamous High Fidelity two-pac at Sam's for $25 :)
Chasing Amy
My 1st was Rashomon.
What was your 1st Criterion
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Chasing Amy.
I bought three at the same time:
Grand Illusion (Renoir) The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer) The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Philip Kaufman) |
Notorious.
it was either armaggedon, when it was available through columbia house, or silence of the lambs. i can't recall which one i got first.
This is spinal tap. Come to think of it, that was my first DVD all together
Brazil, and proud of it.
The Rock. Didn't even know there was anything special about "Criterion" then either. Must have been 3 years ago now. Still haven't opened it. Keep meaning to.

SOTL. I picked it up at the mall right after I received my first DVD player (2001, late start) and as Hannibal was coming out. I couldn't find the older SOTL release, and I -eek- at the $40 price tag of the CC, but I didn't know any better. Now I'm looking at this OOP CC SOTL that I opened...but at least I enjoyed it with my wife.
BTW, YMMV ;) |
Armageddon and I love it, baby. I don't care what you people say. :D
Silence of the Lambs with some sort of deal from 800.com
June 2000 ... also one of my first DVDs ... and one my first VHS tapes in the 1980's.... and still one of my "top 10 of all time" movies:
<b>THE THIRD MAN</b> |
I believe it was This is Spinal Tap, which I got for about $11 new online. One of my first online DVD purchases. I think the second was Silence of the Lambs which I got for 33 cents in the 800.com 3 for $1 deal. Those were the days.
Hard Boiled, which I was able to obtain by following a thread on this forum.
