gotcha .... ok no more
The way i usually show people the difference between widescreen and fullscreen, is by taking a dvd case, turning it sideways, saying "this is how the movie looks in a theater" and then i take this square cut out i have and place it over the case and say "this is what fullscreen does to the movie" they can see for themselves how much is missing on the sides.

They ought to put up comparison pics showing the REAL versions of Star Wars and the new George Lucas Bastardized versions.

Alan Smithee, please either discuss the topic or don't post at all. There are others who are interested in the actual topic who don't want to have to deal with threadcraps.

A friend of mine had bought the foolscreen version by accident. She hadn't opened it yet so will happily be returning it to the store and getting the widescreen version. So education is important...

So, there isn't a right or wrong choice. Unless you feel it's ok for you to dictate what they can and can't watch.
Speaking for myself, I have better things to do with my time than to worry about if other people are watching widescreen or fullscreen. But I appreciate the fact that a Best Buy employee would take the time to show those who don't know the difference.

Well, it's now been 3 days since the DVDs came out, and I'm happy (and surprised) to report that of the many, many people I showed the screenshots to, only 3 still chose full screen. For the most part, I only approached those who obviously looked like they needed help, whether they were holding both versions in their hands or, ya know, asking me the difference between the two or which version was "better". Occasionally, I'd ask some people holding the full screen copies if I could bug 'em and show them something. They were all surprisingly receptive and pretty much blown away by the difference. One guy said something to the effect of "I didn't think there was any difference", and him and his buddy both swapped the full screen versions for widescreen.
These past 3 days have been filled with lots of warm fuzzies. Even my co-workers were using the little "brochure" to show people the difference, and management gave me props for taking initiative and such. Or something like that. I barely remember, as I was mainly focused on the fact that the DVDs were out and a fun time was being had by all.
The weird thing is I hardly had to talk to anyone about the difference, cuz almost everyone I saw was holding the widescreen version. While widescreen normally outsells full screen on a 3:1 basis, this was literally selling 10:1. Maybe more. I guess it's a good thing we got like 1200 widescreen and only 400 full screen. We're down to like 350 widescreen now, and 165 or so full screen.
The times they are a-changin'.

Wow K. Well, I can say is that I'm sure happy there are BB employees out there, like yourself, that are highly motivated to educate the regular consumer. Keep up the good work!

It's a lot like how a lot of people I know prefer keeping their PC in the defult resolution when it can handle much higher. Most people, especially PC buffs like the higher resolution but others like things to fill up the whole screen. I know people that prefer pan and scan as what they feel is the focus of the screen is bigger and easier to see. We agree to disagree.
Whilst it is a waste of time arguing about it with someone, informing and giving them the option is a differant ball-game.
