Hopefully Sony will have the balls to re-release Swamp Thing.

Eh? I can think of two particularly bad points, neither of which are sins committed only by Sony; expensive rereleases and the release of fullscreen-only discs (replacing discs that offered both).

Sony generally have very good quality discs.

Seriously, I'm undecided on Sony's apparent purchase. I would have liked to see the whole MGM catalogue with one company. it would have fitted well with Warner.

What this does say to me is [AOL]-Time-Warner either don't have the money or the balls. I bet it's the money. You'd think they were flush after selling their music divisions.

I think the Bond series is the main target to be SE, SB, DE, CE, LE, etc. since that was the main thing sony was gunning for.

The Bond films? Bah! They were dying to get their hands on SHOWGIRLS.

One thing to note is MGM did a good job of getting out many of their more obscure properties at reasonable prices. The Midnight Movies for instance.

I don't feel this deal will have any negative effects on getting the Hobbitt made. When films like this have a potential Billion dollar worldwide box office gross like the LOTR trilogy did, studios will be more then happy to play nice with each other to get a piece of that HUGE pie!

well there is the disney mgm studios here in orlando, fl. i'm sure they'll have a ton of new merchandise now. when nbc bought universal they had a ton of new merchandise on the shelves instantly.

Well, expect the "Ultimate" James Bond DVD's to be released in somewhat great quality...

MGM already comissioned 4K digital restorations for the first 9 Bond films (excluding Casino Royale). The rest were getting new HD remasters... all (Dr. No through The World is Not Enough) were being handled by Lowry Digital for this.

Also, all but the first 3-4 Bonds were getting DTS remixes.


So, Columbia will have a good start thanks to MGM.

In short, the rights to the Hobbit are a tug of war between MGM and New Line. If Warner bought MGM, there would be no further issues -- since Warner would then own MGM *and* New Line.

Good, so I hope Sony will release the MGM cartoons of old in sets IE Droopy.

Hmmm... Hollow Man, Starship Troopers, Showgirls and Robocop is one Superbit box set... it could happen.

Time Warner owns the MGM theatrical cartoon library via previous acquisitions (MGM pre 1986 --> Turner --> Time Warner). They are getting aroung to releasing their WB cartoons (Looney Tunes vols. 1 and 2); the first volume of MGMs will be the Tom & Jerrys already announced. The Tex Averys and miscellaneous ones will likely be released eventually, but no concrete announcements other than what I mentioned yet AFAIK.

If that's the issue, I'm sure something will be worked out. With LOTR raking in almost 3 billion in box office alone, there is no way this movie will be left unmade.

Actually MGM has absolutely nothing to do with MGM Studios. Disney just used the name for their park and that was it. Its a strange deal MGM and Disney had.

And that deal expires in the next couple of years, and Disney will move to call it Disney Studios dropping the MGM.

So wait, does CTS buying MGM mean that there will be more or fewer full screen releases?

It's really too bad the Warner deal fell through, because that would have meant that MGM's entire catalog would be at one home, and WB has been the BEST studio this year at putting out catalog titles.

However, if CTS's acquisition means more Blu-Ray titles, then that's great.
