BZZZZZT! Wrong.

I would hope that these films wouldn't look like they were shot on HD video; they should look tons better. Film, even 35 year old film, contains much more picture information than the highest of high definition transfers.

I don't think asking if the transfers will be improved is an out of line question. There have always been questions about the quality of the transfers of these discs ever since the set first came out.

If they change the packaging, it's more likely to be a digipak then a bunch of thinpaks. I'm just fine with my original set housed in a nice 5-disc keepcase with a custom cover, thank you very much. If they want my money, they're gonna have to come up with something more substantial then a video game fluff piece.

Set comes out this week, I think (coinciding with the release of the game). I've seen the pictures in the ads, but can anyone confirm the packaging? Also, I never picked up the original release... worth getting now (for ~40 bucks) or should I just wait for HD/Bluray?

There are many 70's,60's,50's movies that look great on dvd.
I can't believe how with all these old movies looking great on dvd like NORTH BY NORTHWEST there are people here who defend THE GODFATHER movies on dvd like this as good as they can look.

Film stocks in common use during the 1970s were discovered to deteriorate at a much faster rate than those from previous or later decades. That's why movies from the 40s or 50s can sometimes look so much better than those from the 70s.

Considering how rough the current transfers of The Godfather look I really can't imagine this one showing off the quality of the HD-DVD process. Maybe they can do a restoration of it before doing a new HD transfer though.

I'm very confused... is there a new version of the Godfather trilogy coming out on DVD? I never picked up the original set and I always meant to. Should be holding out for something, or if there is a re-designed version of the set coming out, where can I see that and take advantage of the pre-order price? I'm not seeing anything listed on Amazon.ca or FutureShop.ca

See above...
1) a price drop and will be having 2) individual releases of Parts II and III, just like the individual release of the original. No new transfers, same discs as currently available.

They should release The Godfather Saga (the version with Pts. 1 & 2 edited together chronologically). Now that, I'd buy.

My VHS of The Godfather Saga is definitely in need of a replacement.

I don't see any information regarding a price drop anywhere. What date is it dropping? Also, I thought Godfather 2 & 3 have been sold independently for ages now. That's why I kept getting confused. I figured this was a very old thread, only re-surfacing now because of the video game.

I was at Best Buy today and saw the "new" set. It is the exact same set with a promo DVD about the new video game. Same exact supplements, same exact case, just the promo in a paper sleeve inside the shrink wrap. Price was $51.99, not sure if that was a pice drop or not, though I think I paid around the same price about a year ago.

As far as the Godfather Saga, I've never seen it but I think The Godfather Pt.2 is one of the best edited films ever. If the Saga shows events chronologically wouldn't that be ruined?

However, that being said, if the Godfather Saga were ever to be released I'd check it out anyway.

The set has been selling for about $40 at Costco for close to a year.

edit: Part III is/was an abortion.

The "Young Vito" stuff was never intended to be seen first. Those sequences appear towards the end of Mario Puzo's original novel.

the packaging is the EXACT same....the only difference is the extra disc...which sounds pretty worthless....it's just info on the game as far as I know....just another way the studio is trying to milk it for all it's worth...

I dunno...I always thought I would like that...but I didn't. It's almost kinda boring in chronological order. just my opinion...well, right now at least. I need to sit down and have a critical veiwing of it.

Is it possible to re-arrange the chapters and watch it chronologically that way? I did that once with Pulp Fiction, it sucked.

no, because the chronological version takes parts from both the first and second movie, as well as several deleted scenes (some of which were not included in this set)

I thought they for sure would release it when the videogame hit.

For me, yeah, and probably for many others. Should this even count as a New release?

There's THE GODFATHER SAGA, THE GODFATHER THE COMPLETE NOVEL(NBC), THE GODFATHER TRILOGY(laserdisc japan import).
They each include deleted scenes , but not all of them are used in each version.
Example: I don't remember which version, but there's a scene where Michael Corleone is walking his dog in the morning along the riverbank in his home in Lake Tahoe with his bodyguard right behind him. It's only a few seconds.

It's just a different experience, that's all. I would never recommend it instead of the standard features, but it's cool for fans who already know the movies front and back and want to experience them in a new way.

I was planning on getting the stand alone releases of the first two films, but it looks like there is no commentary track on Part 2. Can anyone confirm this? Do I have to get the box set for this commentary?

Thanks!

No you don't. The commentary is included on the stand alone releases.

The Trilogy was released here on laserdisc as well, was it not?
