"it's intermission time!" DVD collection - anyone ever seen?
has anyone ever seen these? "Hey folks - it's intermission time!" - a six dvd set of drive-in intermission ads, snack bar promos (lets all go to the lobby...), coming attractions, shorts, old cartoons, special announcements, count down clocks and other drive-in movie stuff. It looks like it might be fun to own, and not a bad price. Just wondring if anyone has bought these...

I saw volume 5 of the VHS version. I was rather disappointed. A lot of the source material was in very very poor condition: faded colors, scratched and water damaged film, etc. I don't know if the earlier volumes in the series have the same issues. If you can look beyond that (it will be very hard though) it's a lot of fun. It gets old a lot quicker than you think. BTW, you really do get hungry watching those snack-bar promos. The way the food is portrayed is positively pornographic!

I can't envision too many situations where you'd watch them after the first viewing.
Although, if you were the type to have movie marathons (with or without other people), they'd be pretty cool to toss in between movies.

You might want to try Sinister Cinema's drive in sets. They give you two movies and the commercials and other items. It is almost like seeing the movies at a drive in.

Those covers look like the Something Weird Video's DVD-Rs of their "Intermisssion" series. The digital versions look a lot cleaner than the analog VHS versions. I would suggest you get one to see if that's cool for you. Volume 3 has a lot of spook show ads.

I have all six of these on VHS, and I definitely plan on getting them on DVD-R.
I may be weird, but I watch these things all the time. Sometimes I just pop one in while I'm doing stuff around the house, and other times I will sit and watch a tape from start to finish. I love the imagery, the music, the announcer's voice, the funny stuff that's not supposed to be funny, the mood they create, etc. It makes me nostalgic for a time during which I wasn't even alive. And yes they are great for putting in before a movie watching party, or playing in the background of any party.
SillyCybe is right. They do make you hungry.
My biggest complaint is the repetition throughout the series. It seems that as they found better versions of the intermission shorts, they would throw them in later in the series. There's also not much order to them. I would have liked it if they'd have put all the holiday clips together, or tried to go chronologically, but like I said, it seems that they assemble these collections as they find the footage. And it's kind of cool that you never know what's coming next. (All this is assuming the DVDs are identical to the VHS...)
If you do decide to get them, I'd advise you to get them straight from somethingweird.com since they often have sales that would make them much cheaper. (they recently had one for 10 dollar DVD-Rs)

From what I remember, Hugo, vol. 2 was very holiday-heavy. If you call the Something Weird 1-800 number they'll be happy to tell you which volume is heavy on holiday stuff. I'm pretty certain it's Volume 2.

Drive-In Classics, a Canadian TV network devoted to B-movie programming, plays these all the time. They'd definitely be fun to have on DVD.
