Aspect ratio question about "The Deep" (1977).
Hey guys,
I picked up The Deep in the Wal-Mart $5.50 bin today. I didn't notice when I bought it, but reading the back when I got home I noticed it only shows the disc as "Full Screen Format".
Thinking maybe the disc was released in seperate widescreen and full-screen formats, I checked online and found there is only one version of the disc - which contains both aspect ratios. The cover art is different, but the UPC is the same as the disc I purchased.
So, before I return it - I just wanted to make sure. Is there a full screen-version out there with the same UPC that is just sold at places like Wal-mart, or are the specs on the cover of the disc I purchased incorrect and the disc is the same (and contains both versions)? It seems unlikely that Columbia would go to the trouble and expense of re-mastering an older release like this specifically in full-screen, when the original disc already contains both versions. But If this is indeed full-screen only, It's going back.
Thanks for any info,
Roy

Columbia has replaced several titles that used to contain both widescreen and fullscreen versions with fullscreen only versions. The old versions were dual sided with widescreen on one side and fullscreen on the other. Now the discs are one sided with only fullscreen. And they still use the same UPC for the fullscreen discs.

Yes, they have dumped the widescreen version off many titles just for places like Wal-Mart.
Consider yourself lucky having known this before you opened it. I got a copy of Eye of the Beholder which still said both versions were there, and they were not. Thankfully they still took the piece of garbage back.
