Some people will actually sit through an entire movie again, JUST to hear the special audio commentaries. Ok. That's nice. Oh but wait, there are special inserts. Photos. Blah blah blah.

There are much more obscure films being released by the large studios and small DVD labels all the time. Some of the Criterion films mentioned above are Oscar nominees/winners, and are very well known by cinephiles and critics - so they're not that obscure.
Trust me, if Criterion didn't release them - someone else would. In fact, there are many Criterion DVDs that have been released by other labels in other regions.

Why do people get so mad about recurring posts? It's like they spend their whole life here and get pissed when something doesn't go their way... Jeez, do people have lives anymore? Oh my god! A recurring thread! Let's all freak out!!
JZ - Criterion is a great outlet for rare, foreign, and different movies. Most time the movies are 'deep' and are the centerpiece for any film school class. There are exceptions, as Criterion tries to provide different genres and examples of film and film history itself. Some movies are selected for 'firsts' in cinematography, directing, acting, etc. If you really love film, this is the collection for you. If you are an idle film-goer, then this would be excessive.
Criterion is definately not over-priced as they spend a lot of money restoring very old films and securing rights to these movies. The extras they provide are awesome.
