At least it does if you're watching a DVD from Front Row Features.
My wife bought a cheapo edition of Sonny Chiba's "Shogun's Ninja." It has the worst transfer I've ever seen, including the Madacy Metropolis. It says in big letters WIDESCREEN EDITION. Hah!
The movie was made widescreen from a matted fullscreen edition (not P&S) by dropping black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Information from all four sides of the screen are missing. It's like watching the whole movie at maximum zoom.
Oh yeah, the soundtrack has frequent wow, flutter, and dropouts. It's like someone in the re-mastering studio kept putting his finger on the capstan head.

If it's a film made in Super-35, VistaVision, 1.85:1, 1.66:1, etc.... it has been cropped on the top and bottom to create the proper widescreen aspect ratio.
Not to mention that any film has to be cropped slightly to preserve the correct framing, on top of the correct aspect ratio.

Well, the Book of the Dead transfer was approved by Sam Raimi, and, like PatrickMcCart said, with certain film stocks, you get different transfers for full frame and widescreen.
Once again, you get into the full frame and P&S details. As for me, director's intention all the way.

Goes for pretty much every dual-format Columbia / Tri-star DVD - in any event, all the ones I have checked (Air Force One, Fifth Element, a few others I can't recall offhand). All matted super 35, not pan and scan.
