Chronicles of Riddick - 11/16/04
FYI...
The Chronicles of Riddick is going to street on November 16 in three versions.
The details on Universal's website are a bit sketchy, but you can check them out here:
http://homevideo.universalstudios.co...p?titleId=2494
The most interesting tidbits are the oddity that the basic edition is rated R (the film was PG-13 theatrically) and that the un-rated edition is approixmately 10 minutes longer than the original theatrical cut.
What does it mean? Who knows...
So far, no DTS, but knowing how Universal is with their initial listings, it could be.

While not great, I enjoyed this movie so I'll pick it up. Might as well go for the unrated director's cut since it's coming out the same day. Nice to see that they are releasing all versions on the same day instead of waiting to double dip

This was a very disappointing movie...although not terrible, just not what I thought it would be. I will be passing on this one, but thanks for the news, always appreciated!

I also really liked CoR. Like Pitch Black, it was a B-movie at heart, but executed really well and overall quite enjoyable and fun. I'm especially looking forward to the unrated director's cut, and I hope it sells well enough that the studio will greenlight the planned sequels.

I will have to get the Unrated Director's Cut... CoR felt like it had been slightly chopped to get the PG-13...making a lot of the action incomprehensible... some of the worst action scene editing I've seen in a LONG time... hopefully this cut will remedy some of that. The movie was decent, but not as good as I had hoped... Universal better announce some DTS on this thing too...

Why did Universal "announce" this DVD, but give no details besides there being 3 different versions (one being 7 minutes longer)?
You'd think they'd wait until they have all the spec info, and announce the DVD then.

I think this is another one of those "unrated" for the sake of selling more copies since whatever they put in will most likely still earn it a pg-13.

Here's some more information on this release that I found over at DVDAnswers:
Universal has announced the official release date for The Chronicles of Riddick which stars Vin Diesel, Thandie Newton, Judi Dench and Keith David. The David Twohy directed sequel, will be available to own from the 16th November in both rated and unrated director's cuts. Each will retail at around $29.98 a pop. Both of the discs will carry 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, French Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks. Extras on both discs will include a Riddick Insider Facts on Demand feature which displays scene-specific facts and trivia during the movie, a Riddick's Worlds extra that takes you on a 360 degree view of eight different locations from the film, and one full level from the new Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay X-Box game. Completing the package will be an interactive virtual guide to the film from the perspectives of the films characters, trailers and more. We can also confirm that the director's cut will include over ten-minutes of action packed footage not seen in cinemas.
Those extras sound really really lame. I can't believe there's not even a commentary track...instead we get a level from the video game? If this garbage is true, i'm definitely waiting until the eventual/inevitable re-release.
