Has anyone heard which CC is going out of print in OCT?

About every 6 mo. they pull one of these titles off of circulation.

I've heard from a couple of that the next one going most likely is:

The Seventh Seal

Has anyone else heard this?

Also did anyone else hear anything different?

I believe "The Seventh Seal" is a Janus Collection film; unless I'm mistaken, I don't see how this one will be going OOP (unless Criterion plans to revisit it with a new edition).

I don't believe that Criterion has a "schedule" for having titles go out of print - that simply wouldn't make sense. To the best of my knowledge, Criterions go out of print because Criterion no longer has the rights to those titles. There have been exceptions, such as Beauty and the Beast which went OOP because the edition was being upgraded.

The next one to go out of print is The Bank Dick which is going op as of August 31th. I wonder why.

Universal is releasing a W.C. Fields box set which includes The Bank Dick.

Is the Criterion version of Bank Dick worth buying (since it's pretty much extra-less), in view of a new version from Universal?

And no, I don't plan on buying an OOP CC so that I can make $$ selling it later

No, I'd recommend going with the much cheaper Universal (which I expect will have similar picture quality).

I don't have the CC Bank Dick and really see no reason to rush out and buy it - I'll be getting the W.C.Fields box set.

Absurd! This thread is absurd!

1. Criterions don't just go out of print. There's always a good reason.

2. They always tell you ahead of time.

3. Out of 260 Criterions only 16 are OOP, so they don't go out of print every 6 months.

Absurdity!!

Not always. How to Ahead in Advertising and the 3 Tati discs didn't have any warning.

Almost as absurd as undermining your own arguments with facts ... as I stated earlier in this thread, there is no set schedule, but if 16 Criterions have gone OOP, and DVDs have been around for less than 8 years, that does indeed average out to approximately one every 6 months.

I think that the original post implied that CC takes one title out of print every 6 months just to make it a collectors' item, which is not the case. 6 months might be an average, but they frequently go out in groups (e.g., the Tatis, the Orions, the Hitchcoks).

Also, to answer the original poster's question, "The Seventh Seal" is distributed the US by Janus Films, with which CC has a very close relationship, so it is unlikely that it will ever go out of print.

Which is why I stated not once but twice in this thread that there is no set schedule.

I'll say it again:

"I don't believe that Criterion has a "schedule" for having titles go out of print - that simply wouldn't make sense. To the best of my knowledge, Criterions go out of print because Criterion no longer has the rights to those titles."
