The video AD for ST TOS grew on me the 2nd and 3rd time I watched it. Sent it to my other ST friends, can't wait to see what their reaction is.

I own the full set of two episode discs. I'm not thrilled about re-buying the series but I'm doing it anyway. I think the menus look cool actually. Very in keeping with the show.

I'd say that I'm "fan base" and I really dug the trailer.

Are you selling the old disks? I sold mine and made enough to finance the new sets plus about $100. Not too shabby.

As for the trailer, I was a bit taken aback at first, but I was totally into it by the end. Pretty cool.

I'm not sure if fans are going to be happy with the R1 packaging of TOS. The plastic "communicator" case is cool, but once you open that, you're left with a flimsy plastic stack of DVD holders and a slim booklet.

Is that any different from the R2s, though?

I've thought about doing that. Where did you sell them?

I'll reserve judgement till I have it, but I don't have any idea how I'm going to store this thing

The one nice thing about the set is that the box is essentially the same size as any boxed set, so you shouldn't have any problem getting it on your shelf.

Ebay. Of course, that was a little while ago, so more people may know about the new sets, and more people may be selling, so prices could have changed. I haven't checked.

Yup, as soon as I heard about these sets I put up the 40 original discs on Half.com and made about $10-$12 each. There could still be plenty of people that don't know about the new boxsets (until they actually get released) if you still want to try to sell the original releases.

Does anyone know if the video on these sets is any different from the mastering on the single disc volumes? I am probably the only person on these boards that generally is not interested in so called "special features"(with some exceptions such as Cold Mountain) I hesitate to buy again.

IIRC, they were remastered on the original releases. I highly doubt they would re-remaster them.

This will give you an idea of the size of the box and what the actual DVD holder looks like:

Ah, thanks Mike, I was struggling with the scale of this thing. But it looks like it will fit nicely with my storage.

Not too impressed with this though:

Digital Bits review is up

I'd have to agree with Bill that the more I look into the extras, the more I'd wish they'd really pulled out all the stops for the geek-completist (esp. for the MSRP).

Ah. Thanks for putting the sizing issue to rest.

The quality of what actually holds the discs in place seems to be going down though.

Yeah - I don't like that.

At least the total size is consistent with other DVD packaging.

The Digital Bits review said the video quality was slightly better, which is likely due to the better MPEG2 compression.
