I understand that its OOP and its a Criterion, but its also not the only one. Spinal Tap is OOP but it doesn't go for up to $600. Also the movie doesn't seem like a very entertaining one to me, not something I would rewatch over and over. SO what is the deal??

The Salo DVD was withdrawn shortly after release although stories vary as to whether this was due to a botch over rights or the film's content.

If someone had a nice vacuum-sealed plexiglass container of John Lennon's poop for sale on ebay, it would probably command $600, but, like Salo, it would still be poop. Rare poop is expensive, but still poop. Never forget.

I about pooped myself when I sold my still-sealed Salo for $750 last winter.

I get an amazing feeling of deja vu everytime someone asks this question and as I read some of the responses.

Most people who mock the film have never seen it, or just don't understand what Pasolini was trying to do. Very surprising from people here, whom you would think were smarter than that.

I've seen it. It's that bad. I've seen similar messages conveyed by directors in much more palatable and entertaining forms.

OTOH, I guess those of us who have seen it and still mock it just aren't as smart as you. Excuse me while I back away from my keyboard to genuflect.*

They did have it in for you for some reason. Pro & FilmFanSea are still cool in my book even though Pro never updated his DVD collection in his signature after he said he would & later removed the link all together. Well, um, FilmFanSea is still cool in my book.

Gaspar Noe, director of Irreversible, says it is one of his absolute favourites and that Pasolini is a major influence. Noe makes same pretty dark, disturbing and hard to watch films but Salo is where it all began and its historical significance is another reason it is so valuable.

Salo is much like truffles... both are rare but distasteful to most.

It doesn't matter what "form" a rare item may come in---jewels, records, coins, stamps---it's always the same rule: supply vs. demand. There aren't many (genuine) copies floating around, making it more of a "collector's item" than a worthwhile, practical purchase. Simple as that.

I have pretty much given up as far as explaining Salo and why is it an important film. It really comes down to the fact whether or not you "want" to understand the motives behind the creator's efforts.

As to my collection...not only did I remove the link to it, I totally gave up on DVDPROFILER. After their database "update" I lost over 21 titles for which I had manually added updates (look at the current image for 17 Fois Cecile Cassard...) I have a number of foreign titles and their system is now simply lacking them.....that's all.
