So the "Paramount in the 50s" featurette that's on the original Nutty Professor release isn't on the new one? Bah.

"The Nutty Professor" DVD came out Tuesday and it is a smash! Saw this as a kid after a long hiatus where I was Jerry-starved (since "The Geisha Boy", actually - when is that one coming out on DVD?!). I couldn't believe the excellence. It still stands out today as something "more than a comedy". It's also prophetic: the first film about steroids?

The extra featurettes are stupendous, well-directed, well-crafted and totally original in tone and content and give a good introduction to the other masterpieces in the series, including the ones directed by Frank Tashlin. I would have personnally added a feature titled "Jerry Lewis and the French", which would have once and for all answered the question "Why do the French love him so?". The answer, of course, is that he makes fun of the American way of life in ways the French couldn't even imagine. To the French, Jerry Lewis made it OK not to want to be American...

I'm not really a Jerry Lewis fan, but this (along with The Ladies Man) are comic gems. I hope people who "hate" the Jerry Lewis schtick will give this one a chance.

I want "That's My Boy" and I want it now.

Lewis - Martin, classic.

Lewis plays nerdy "Junior" Jackson. Dean Martin, the football All-American Bill Baker, is hired to make Junior a great player and not such an embarrassment to his dad, "Jarring" Jack Jackson, a former football great (and now wealthy alum) at Ridgeville College. Martin was in his mid-30s at the time, so even that was funny.

If you played football, or are even intimately familiar with it, there are even more unintentional laughs. Oh, and none other than Frank Gifford doubled for Lewis during the football scenes. Heisman Trophy winner from Michigan and real-life sports announcer Tom Harmon has a cameo as a sports announcer.

"Yas gotta hit 'em low, hit 'em hard, and if they get up, hit 'em again. Gotta play GUTS football!"

It figures, I didn't know this was coming out, and picked up a used copy of the old version for ~5 bucks last week. Oh well, I can sell it at Blockbuster for $8.

Yeah, and it has to be in their system, so some of those cheapies might not be listed.

Plus, you would be buying at MSRP (or getting used.)
