I never said I saw them at the theatre :p. (But, I should say, I DID see the SEs in theatre...besides the point, I know) I think the first time I saw Star Wars was either on BETA or television. Either way, growing up in the 80s you couldn't escape Star Wars. It was everywhere and I thank GL for providing me with Xwings to attack my Castle Greyskull and blasters to chase my brother with (until that time he fell down the stairs and I was grounded for three days with nothing but those 2 HotWheels cars I manged to sneak into my room and pretend they were driven by Hulk Hogan and Macho Man). Now, with these DVD releases, the blaster colors will shimmer and shine and I have an apartment so no stairs!

OOOOOoooOOOOooooooo.

Also, has anybody every stoped to think that maybe, just maybe, there was a second shooter behind the grassy knoll?

Josh H 08-09-04 02:12 PM

Come on guys, no discussion/arguing over the changes here.

The old changes discussion thread got closed, so I started a new one.

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=379194

Take this discussion here so this thread can just be for those wanting to read up on what's confirmed to be on the DVDs with out these stupid arguments.

Hey all I was saying is that it does change the character and it is an important issue to alot of fans who hold this film dear..such as myself. It seems that most us who hate the changes are from the generation who saw this film in 1977 as a 10-15 year old. Everyone is entitled to his or her opnion, but IMHO he has ruined what he created. I mean, should we go back and change the shark in Jaws because it looks fake now? Should we go and redo Linda Blairs makeup in the Exorcist because it could be done so much better? When is enough, enough?

Anyway...you all enjoy your watered down Han Solo with all the pretty colors...:)

Edit** Sorry Josh, posted before I saw yours...

It is a sad day when someone feels that they have to bump a STAR WARS thread.

wow, That from the new dvd ? Shame Jabba still looks like crap, maybe he will look better when moving.

And if Han and Greedo both shoot at same time then thats good enough for me. They are now both cold blooded killer in my eyes, and Greedo doesnt look like a p**sy anymore but getting caught with his guard down ;)

Plus, hopefully they'll make it look like Han shooting caused him to miss, fixing the main problem with the scene which was that it was absurd for anyone to miss at that close of range.

Mike Lowrey 08-11-04 04:01 PM

That's great, but why are these screen caps not in the proper anamorphic squeeze?

No...those are from some old DVD....

And Jabba...doesn't look like crap. Somewhere on here, in this thread I believe, someone had an animated gif of this sequence and it looked pretty good. Much better than the '97 SE version.

Actually that's an excellent point. Now that you mention it, I really never did like the fact that they "punked out" Greedo like that. If the scene now shows both of them shooting at the same time, it might actually add to the tension, if you will, of that scene. As in like, Han barely escaped that situation.

Think about it, it will now look like a classic Western showdown where both gunmen shoot at the same time, one hits, and the other slightly misses. Could actually be a major improvement over the original.

it doesn't really matter who shoots within a split second of the other- the new take uses just one 'establishing' shot to get across this action- previously the way the scene was editied (in the theatrical version that coincidently won the Academy award for editing) they had cut between c/u's of each, and the editing served as visual puctuation to the dialouge.
the original scene was lyrical in the way the 'beats' were set-up.

that will always be missing from this cobbled together under-achiever, and no amount of rationalizing will make it anything more than what it is- a degradation of a far better version, both in concept and execution.

Artman 08-11-04 04:30 PM

Any confirmation (screenshots) of R2 being colored blue during the ANH space battle? He was still black in the 97 SE, which didn't seem to make sense as they changed him for Empire and Jedi...

Also I just noticed in the SE of Empire - when Vader and Luke are battling it out in in the carbonite chamber - they re-used Vader's "ooomph!" twice, which kinda bugs me. In the original when Vader falls off the ledge he has this raspy "aaaaugh" which was much better imo.

Hopefully things like this will be taken care of on the DVD's.

Oh I see now, ckolchak, you're a expert film editor now. I'm glad your here to point these things out to us. To educate us as to our failed ways.

I didn't realize what I said there at first, but yeah...that was a pretty good line, if I do say so myself... :D

Well, getting back on topic here, with the above Ben-Vader duel, with the new light saber coloring, can we assume the other appearances of this light saber in ANH is glowing blue as well? Like the light up in Ben's adobe home and then in the Falcon during that Jedi drone training sequence.

You would think so - but this image would seem to indicate it's unchanged. Bummer. Maybe we'll be surprised?

Oh, surely not. They wouldn't leave those scenes unchanged. Geez, it's so easy to do these saber effects these days. Star Wars Fan Films are full of these effects.

Class316 08-11-04 06:35 PM

In an unrelated note, I got the Star Wars Holiday Special on DVD complete with original commercials :D Indeed a rare gem! And it's not SE'd -rolleyes-

Mike Lowrey 08-11-04 06:49 PM

What's changed about these scenes?

I assume the X-wing panel has some updated "buttons" or whatever, but what's the deal with the briefing scene? Changed wall panel or what? I can't recall that scene from memory all that well.

Oh wait. the X-wing view screen looks cleaned up and enhanced.
