i'll be buying the set in the same spirit that i dropped $50 on a condensed Super 8 version of ESB back in 1982.

that was only 24 minutes of footage, but i had a blast watching it over and over and over-
same thing about 5 years earlier than that when i got a copy of a 400' B&W silent version of SW.
all i remember it having was the TIE attack from the Death Star escape, but it was still a blast to get even that tiny little bit of magic.

in some ways, having the entire films at our beck and call the way home video allows...kind of loses something ...the magic of running the film over and over in your mind...or maybe just the burning desire of having access to something you can't have.

Sorry, but I'm not just going to "get over" Lucas' pissing on film history and the very films that made him rich in the first place. Others can just accept it and bend over like an ass-puppet lapdog if they want to, but I have no doubt in my mind that it was overwhelming FAN OUTRAGE over Jar Jar Binks that directly lead to his much decreased role in the subsequent prequels. Perhaps one day, persistent demand for the original classics on DVD wil finally get through Lucas' skull and we will have them on DVD. Until that glorious day, the bitching among certain SW circles will commence.

i have to disagree with that.
i don't think it was FAN outrage...i think it was an example of what i described earlier in this thread- it was common public ridicule.

anybody remember the Jar-Jar on the Bar-B-Que gag on David Letterman?
how about Leno jokes about the character?
the character was widely ridiculed in mainstream media as being annoying.

Lucas doesn't live in the 'fan world'.
if criticism had been confined to that alone, i doubt he would have deviated from his apparant desire to make Jar-Jar the alien mascot of the PT.

I'm sure opinons can have an effect. But they need to go to the right place. Write some letters to lucasfilms, bombard them with e-mails.

Bitching repeatedly here will do no good. You're certainly free to continue doing so, but your naive if you think people bitching on message boards will have any impact on the OT ever coming to DVD.

Writing Lucasflims might help, as would people expressing distaste in inteviews in national media aricles, jokes on late night talk shows, etc. But random people whining on the net won't affect Lucas one iota.

No Lucas stated back in 95 that the THX VHS and LD release back in 95 would be the last release of the original version...this was nearly 10 god damn years ago...you people need to get over it and move on and accept that the SE's are the real deal...

Lucas has forced me to accept THESE DVDS as the real deal.

Here is the entire video clip of the whole Jedi ending. Needs the Xvid codec to view.

If you dont wanna bother with the xvid codec and just wanna see the Anakin ghost spirit part with no sound:

That is a load of shit. Anyone watching the Jedi video clip will clearly hear the "Wesa Free" because it isnt drowned out at all. It was made loud on purpose.

That statement is a load of shit. There is absolutely nothing loud about the dialogue. You most certainly can't hear it easily. You can hear it, but not as easily as you make it sound. It's mostly a bunch of shouting, then you can hear "wesa free."

Frankly, who gives a shit. If one 2 second line of gungan dialogue amongst a massive, cheering crowd gets you that pissed off, then you need help. If Jar-Jar was standing right in the middle of the screen screaming "Wesa free" then I could see your point. But in this scene, it is harmless.

Lucas has forced me to accept THESE DVDS as the real deal.
Talk about hyperbole. Lucas has never forced you to do a thing. You have a choice. If Lucas was forcing you, you wouldn't have a choice.

Others can just accept it and bend over like an ass-puppet lapdog if they want to
Yeah, and you'll continue to whine and moan like a six year old in a toy store, when mommy didn't get him that toy he wanted. All the while you'll achieve absolutely nothing.

As for me bending over and taking it, you're mistaking me for someone who despises the changes, yet will still buy the DVDs. Someone like you perhaps. I happen to like the vast majority of the changes.

Thing is, while many of us realize or care, 99% of the general movie-going public does not care.

I hold out hope that we 1% will get what we want someday.

And that is why all the petitions in the world will not do anything. Because Joe average doesn't care about the changes.

i remember when Ted Turner was proudly trumpeting his digital box of crayons and you saw a new classic getting colorized and released on VHS every few months.
he started to take flack from all quarters, and it wouldn't have been uncommon to hear him mildly ridiculed on something like Johnny Carson or David Letterman.
there were many people, who had a voice in mainstream, conventional media, who were ticked off by that practice and public scorn eventually got him off that habit.

i would say until your average Wal-Mart shopper knows that the name Lucas is synonomous with all the bad things that we OT fasciasts say he is, then you are right -it won't do anygood.

if however, we start to see references in USA Today and Entertainment weekly that counter balance any enthusiasm for this release with the visible annoyance of lack of the originals, or even better- see either one panning this release solely because of his stance on the originals, then i think the first cracks in the damn are going to be seen, and eventually...somewhere down the line, the whole kit and kaboodle will come crashing down.
Great post, except for one thing: EW has a very "partisan" take on Star Wars. It is the same attitude of some (not you in particular) here where they take pop shots at the SW francise and/or Lucas. Anyone can take a cheap shot; its easy. Backing up your opinion intelligently will gain you respect.

Exactly. Same with endless bitching on message boards. Joe Six Pack will see neither, buy millions of copies of the DVDs, giving Lucas no reason to care about the vocal (on the net anyway) minority of upset fans.

I dunno... he's added Gungans to RotJ. He's added Hayden to RotJ. I don't think *everyone* will notice that -- but those sort of changes stand out to more than just "Internet fanboys".

We'll see... but I do think we are definitely getting closer to the day when the original (un-SEed) trilogy sees the light of day again.

True that they will be noticed, the bigger point is that Joe Six pack isn't going to care one way or the other.

Even a vast majority of upset internet fans will buy this DVD. So they're not helping their own cause. If they wanted to help their own cause, they absolutely would not buy this DVD. But most will. They would write Lucasfilm angry, yet respectful letters. But they won't. So it's all moot.

Yep. Probably half, if not more of those who signed over the petition at originaltrilogy.com are gonna be buying this.

Are these the ones that have the missing C-3PO footage in ANH and the missing 7-second Leia footage in ESB??? I think these are the same versions I have (and they're anamorphic as well)

My guess is far higher than that. I'd bet that 9 out of every 10 upset SW internet fans who slam the SEs, will buy this sooner or later. I just don't buy, despite all the denials, that Star Wars fans are going to pass up the first release of any Star Wars on DVD, after all this time and all of this complaining.

I completely agree with you. That is why I have mentioned in many of posts (present & past) wishing that those of us who want the OT to pass on buying the coming set in hopes that even a minor dent could be made. But look thru some of the posts in this & other past Star Wars threads. Very few of the people bashing the new set actually state they are not going to buy the new set.

I am definitely passing on this set. I have my new anamorphic (!)bootlegs of the OT which look unbelievably good and no longer have the audio sync problems of the past. They have all the extra materials from the Definitive Laserdisc Boxset as well (which are thin to say the least).

I will definitely rent the new releases to watch as a curiosity and to view the new extras but they will never join my dvd collection no matter how good they look or sound.

I have survived not owning Phantom Menace or Clones and these new revised releases of the trilogy just seem like extensions of those movies instead of vice versa. (I know, I know...that is what he wants)

Hmmm...maybe more thread...an official poll...perhaps...
