I've somehow gotten a reputation for being anal (one of my roommates actually offered to replace a book he had borrowed, as the pages had gotten slightly bent from wetness when he got caught in the rain), so people are always very careful to say, "Can I borrow this? I'll be *really* careful with it!" And I always say okay, provided they understand that if the disc comes back fuct, they're responsible.

The exceptions are, I won't lend out the Criterion 'Spinal Tap' or the recalled 'Little Shop'. Not because I don't trust my friends, but because I'd feel like kind of a tool asking somebody to give me $100 for a DVD. It's easier to just not lend them. (People rarely want them anyway; I have a VHS dub of the extras off 'Little Shop' which I can lend, and the only time anybody asked for 'Tap', he specifically wanted to hear the in-character commentary.) Oh, and I won't lend out multi-region discs, because I don't know anybody with a multi-region player. But a *lot* of people have wanted that Ricky Gervais stand-up movie.

I always think it's funny that my roommate will come in to look for something to borrow and never be able to find anything he wants, but will always look. He's wound up borrowing 'Cabin Fever' more than once (though he still hasn't watched it). But he also has asked several times, "Why do you have 'Great Expectations'? Oh, it's the old one."

I'm surprised that so many people lend their DVDs to others. I won't even lend mine to friends, and they know not to ask. They're just too important to me, and so many people still set them data side down and shit like that. If a friend wants to watch a movie, I suggest we go to my place and watch it.

How comfortable do you guys feel about lending?

I think I've got around 180 movies. People usually just comment that I have a lot and it never seems to be negative. My best friend keeps telling me I have horrible taste in movies, but it's annoying because his collection is about 90% mainstream action movies or blockbusters.

The only way I'd ever let someone borrow a DVD is if I know them really really well (except for my family--I have a rule that they can watch them but can't take them out of the house).

I reacted the same way when I saw pics of your collection in the Show me your HT thread. I mean 20,000 DVDs would leave anyone speechless.

Otherwise wonderful human beings tend to treat media (books, CDs, DVDs, videos) like shit. I take great care of my stuff and I refuse to pretend that my home is the local Blockbuster or the public library. Actually, it really isn't much of an issue, because I'll usually just sit down and watch whatever the person wants to borrow, so it becomes social.

But nothing leaves the house. I've learned that through many years of experience (and several books that came back trashed, and one laserdisc that 'disappeared' on its way back to me).

Most of my friends are movie buffs, so I don't get too much crap. However, I feel pretty awkward when people refer to the room in my house where I keep my DVDs being my "movie room" - I have books too!

Sorry no links right now, but I don't have much of a pink film "collection" yet anyway. I have the Kimstim release of WIFE TO BE SACRIFICED and the Japan Shock release of STAR OF DAVID: BEAUTY HUNTING. I also have a couple titles on laserdisc and VHS copies of a bunch of titles. On my next trip to Japan, I plan on picking up some R2 Nikkatsu pink DVDs, even though they are a bit expensive and have no English subs. (I'm hoping to luck out and find some used copies instead). Hopefully someday, a US company will pick up the distribution rights to more of these great Japanese exploitation films. :D (Come on, Blue Underground, Synapse, anyone??)

Actually the reaction I get to my ~300 strong collection is, "Wow, you've got a lot of [insert genre here] DVDs." When actually, I've got a fair mix of everything except for horror titles of which I loathe.

well, the most common response for me is "Do you know how much you've spent on these?" I only have about 200 DVDs, so I guess that's not too much. Most of mine are indie, foreign, criterions, with a sizable dose of interesting blockbusters too, but friends who want to borrow anything at all are only interested in the mainstream movies; i'd actually be happy and willing to let them try the more obscure films if they wanted to, and see if I could convert them, but none of them have been interested.

not me. I have nearly 800 titles and they're definitely the minority in my collection. If I had to guess I'd say about 25-30. When I'm in the mood to watch a movie, it's rarely a horror movie.

well i guess i would be. i have over 200 and i love horror, it's one of my favorite genres.

and yeah people are pretty amazed at how many i have. but my collection doesn't compare to how many some have on here.

I think some might be, but not I. I dig a lot of different genres but horror is not my thing. Mostly a foreign/classic kinda guy.

I am well over 400 (not including my TV box sets) and I would say horror is my smallest category (though I think I have quality if not quantity - American Werewolf, Evil Dead, Final Destination 1+2, Near Dark, Blade 1+2, The Mummy / Returns, Sleepy Hollow, The Stand, The Shining, a few others).

I would say my collection is well spread among Action/Adventure, sci-fi, comedy, westerns and epics, with a sprinkle of romantic comedies to keep the wife happy.

I'm approaching 600 and, according to Guzzlefish, 27% of my collection is horror/suspense.

Hmm, that's interesting. I wouldn't necessarily label Blade and The Mummy as horror. I just put Blade in with Comic Book/Superhero Action, and The Mummy series in, out of all things, "archeaological action", similar to the Indy and Tomb Raider series.

But yeah, my collection is spread across Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Westerns, Historical epics, War/Military action, and TV box sets.

I pretty much hate "horror" titles, persay. I just don't get into them. When I watch a movie, I want to be one of two things, entertained or educated. Scared is not something I want to be.

Well, I have about 250 (I don't consider that a lot, BTW) and I don't have any horror, unless you count Se7en and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series as horror, which I don't.

Oh, wait, I have Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, so I guess that's a couple.

I also have around 250. The only horror I have is the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and The Sixth Sense. Some might consider Alien Quadrilogy. But I don't have anything I'd consider true horror. And I never will. Just doesn't do it for me.

What bugs me the most is when people ask if I've gotten anything good recently. Why on earth would I be buying things that aren't good? Have I nothing better to do with my money than buying things I have no real interest in? That's just about the dumbest and most insulting thing they could ask. They may not think my choices are good, but that's for them to figure out. So I usually just say no. :D
