yeah, this sucked. the one movie that I actually make a cameo appearance in and I gotta wait over a year to own on DVD. Ugg, I even had to buy a bootleg copy in Chinatown to appease my urgings to watch this movie.

I don't know about DVD, but Spaceballs was the fastest movie to VHS release ever. Nothing beats being released to home video before the filming is even done.

I love that part!

Anyways, Christmas holiday movies usually take a year to capitalize on that ooey gooey holiday feeling. As far as I can remember that was true when it used to take over a year for it to get released on video so it was actually a shorter time.

Dark Helmet: What the hell am I looking at?... When does this happen in the movie?
Colonel Sandurz: Now - you're looking at now sir...Everything that happens now is happening now.
Dark Helmet: What happened to then?
Colonel Sandurz: We passed it.
Dark Helmet: When.
Colonel Sandurz: Just now... We're at now now.
Dark Helmet: Go back to then?
Colonel Sandurz: When?
Dark Helmet: Now.
Colonel Sandurz: Now?
Dark Helmet: Now.
Colonel Sandurz:I can't
Dark Helmet: Why?
Colonel Sandurz: We missed it.
Dark Helmet: When?
Colonel Sandurz: Just now.
Dark Helmet: When will then be now?
Colonel Sandurz: Soon!
Dark Helmet: How soon?
Technician: Sir!
Dark Helmet: What?
Technician: We've identified their location!
Dark Helmet: Where?
Technician: It's the moon of Vega
Colonel Sandurz: Good work. Set a course and prepare for our arrival
Dark Helmet: When?
Technician: Nineteen hundred hours, sir!
Colonel Sandurz: By high noon tomorrow they will be our prisoners!
Dark Helmet: WHO?!?!

Wasn't "Lost in Translation" released while it was still playing in theaters?

Depends on the movie and the time of year. Summer movies tend to go faster, around 4 months as studios push things out before Christmas. Winter movies are more in line with 5 months though

Scary Movie 3 came out around October 2003 and came out on DVD in May.

That was a long time.

movies that are Academy Award nominees sometimes get second releases in the theaters cuz they want to drum up Academy hype or cuz they want to sell more tickets as a result of the Academy hype.

I believe that "Lost In Translation" was released on DVD during its initial Theatrical run. It was a big gable at the time and it seemed to have paid off well. I don't think anybody has done it since.

This is what the IMDb says:
The film was originally set to debut on video and DVD just three weeks after its theatrical premiere. Due to threats of a boycott by exhibitors, Fox moved the release date of the video and DVD to September.

I assume mdc is right, though, when he says August 26th, because my general rule is that if anybody says something which contradicts the IMDb, the IMDb is probably wrong. In keeping with that, here's "Blair Witch" trivia:

"The movie was released theatrically in the United States on July 30, 1999. The video and DVD were released on October 26 of the same year, less than 3 months after it's wide theatrical release, making it the fastest theater-to-video production on any movie."

I assume they meant "to date"...

It was in theaters for quite a long time. I got to see it three times during its release.

It had faded from theaters by December and was only playing on a few screens in most areas, but the Golden Globe and Oscar noms brought it back to the limelight (and more theaters) in January so it was basically in theaters and on DVD simultaneously.

So is this a boycott of the movie being released so soon or a boycott of the movie being released period?

If its the latter then they really need to make more serious threats next time.
