This was the first thing I checked out...it is the same commentary from the 2-Disc just with video too...its done like the Goonies vid commentary...

sorry no pics guys...

slop101 10-14-04 10:09 AM

The second disc in this set is identical to the second disc in the two-disc set. The new booklet looks kinda cool, but is completely useless. The video commentary is sort of useless too. It's the same commentary from the old set, but it's just a video of the actors while they watch and talk with a little picture-in-picture of the movie in the corner.

If you don't have the first set, by all means, get this one. If you already have the first set and feel satisfied about it - don't bother with this new one. But if you live and breath Hellboy and can't get enough, get both - but know that you'll have a duplicate of the second disc.

So "essentially," the Theatrical Cut of the film is a part of the 3 Disc edition and everything's been ported over from the 2 Disc edition (sort of).

That's the post I was waiting to read. I'm a casual fan who missed it in theaters on purpose (like almost all movies since I started buying DVDs, not crapping on Hellboy).

Thanks for the info.

Not really - the only way you'll see the theatrical cut on the 3-disc set is in a tiny window during the actor's commentary. And there's still a good deal of extras on the 3-disc not on the two disc. The only thing on the 2-disc that's not on the 3-disc is the theatrical cut w/ the original commentary.

QuiGonJosh 10-14-04 04:29 PM

Watched the DC! Much better...if thats possible! Awesome! Everyone...GET IT!

I waited to pick up the 3 Disc but wanted to see what was missing from the 2 Disc edition.

I'm glad I waited. I'm definately picking up the 3 Disc now.

Thanks for the info.

I'm not into Comic Hero breasts, otherwise I would.

G-Rex 10-14-04 11:08 PM

My local Blockbuster has the gift set with the Hellboy bust. Looked pretty cool. I'm just gonna get the regular 3-discer though.

dullboy 10-15-04 09:23 AM

So the Hellboy Recommends section on the first disc of the 2-disc version that has the McBoing and Tell-Tale Heart cartoons are NOT on this 3-disc set?

You are correct.

Zodo 10-15-04 09:55 AM

Why would you want to watch the entire movie looking at the actors commentary? Wouldn't it make more sense to make the video commentary the small box in the corner, rather than the movie be the small box in the corner?

Btw, what are the added scenes? What makes this cut any better?

Because it is the Director's Cut... aren't Director Cuts always better ;)

Crap, I really enjoyed those cartoons. I have no idea what they had to do with Hellboy, but they were fun.

dullboy 10-15-04 12:26 PM

Yeah, no kidding. Another reason to hold on to the original set.

mwj 10-15-04 08:05 PM

That's disappointing, I wanted to see those cartoons.

eau 10-15-04 09:44 PM

How long are those cartoons?

jaeufraser 10-19-04 03:32 PM

Are there any reviews of this? I am debating picking this up today but was hoping to hear about the new cut, like a review or something. Anyone?

Tarantino 10-19-04 05:22 PM

I just know there's 13 extra minutes or something.

It was pretty popular this morning at my store, lots of people digging that and the Legacy collections.

Although there's only 13 more minutes, they add a bit more to the HB (that's Hellboy to you) and Liz "Firestarter" love story, which actually makes for a better movie. How? Well, it just gives the whole subplot more impact and relevence which makes one view the film a bit different.

Of course there's several extended versions of several scenes, which basically just flush out the Hellboy universe if you will, but they're wonderful additions.

I actually understood the movie a bit more with the added footage. I was a bit lost with the theatrical cut.

Anyway....I had a disc freeze problem with my first disc. A few seconds into Chapter 5 at about the 17:30 mark, my disc just stopped playing. Tried to FF scan through it...nothing...tried to RW....nothing. Took it out, looked at it...surface was fine. Put it back in, did a chapter skip to 5...same thing. Did this another time....same thing. Finally just took it out, whiped it down with a little bit of alcohol and dried it off, put it back in and it worked fine.

So once again, just like the Star Wars discs, there may seem to be a slight film on the disc. Very strange, because the surface was crystal clean to the eye.

Rivero 10-19-04 07:02 PM

Well, I just finished watching the DC. The one new aspect I'm not sure I like about this new cut is the increased romance and flirting with Liz and Myers, especially in their scene in the car. Even Del Toro says in the commentary that the tone of this scene made him cut it out because Liz seems too happy-go-lucky this early in the film. All in all, I guess you could say the new footage makes it slightly better but it's really just the same film just longer. No new revelations that change anything drastically. Most of the new and extended scenes flesh out the story slightly but this movie's highlights were never the story imo. What I loved about Hellboy and still do are the cool and memorable characters: Broom Brutenholm, Voldo from Soul Calibur, the Nazi bitch, the intellectual fishman, Jeffrey Tambor and of course Hellboy himself. Even the generic love interest and young cocky kid were easy to watch. By comparison I didn't really give a shit whether Mary Jane died or not at the end of Spiderman 2. Anyways it's a fantastic DVD set worth owning even if you have the first version, the movie still rocks hard. Bring on the sequel!

Edit to add: here's a link that takes you to a 4 minute chat with Del Toro where he talks about the new DVD and the future of Hellboy. Just click and wait a few minutes:

Mike Lowrey 10-19-04 07:40 PM

Well, I agree, the additional footage only slightly made it better, but it fleshed out enough of some of the characters that it made it more understandable. A few seconds here or there can make a difference sometimes and this time, I'd say they do. Like I said above, I was a bit lost with the theatrical cut. Mainly with some of the motivations behind some of the characters' actions.

My question is whatever happens with Abe Sapian after he climbs out of of the green water sewer thingy? We see him cower behind a pillar as the monster runs off, but that's the last we see of him.

Actually the last we see of him is talking to Liz while he's healing in a septic tank.

Oh that's right...was that a new scene, I don't remember that in the TC.

OK, I'll take your word for it. I'm not about to go check the TC for it.

PS. Anybody having disc playing problems?

Rammsteinfan 10-21-04 07:46 PM

works great so far... it was interesting they included the theatrical version but only in the small screen while the video commentary takes up the rest of the screen. Guess I have to keep both sets.

now if we could only figure out what to do for our $5 rebate! I love when they forget to put the PoP w/ the set.

Romerojpg 10-22-04 08:51 AM

The Bloody Bust version seems to be sold out on the net for me from the usual places, and the price is going up at certain places!

No way I am paying that much for it,, so I have had to order the regular 3 dvd version which I could have had weeks ago :(

bloody idiot online places didnt get enuff stock to cover orders made months ago! they need a beating!

Dr. DVD 10-22-04 09:15 AM

I actually arranged to come into work late Tuesday so I could stop by Best Buy and pick up the version with the bust. It didn't look like they had that many available, so I am glad I did so, especially after reading in here.

gtyper 10-22-04 09:40 AM

I just wish I could find a place to bulk purchase some of those cases used in the packaging.

Blah.

What, the ThinPaks? Most places that sell DVD cases sell ThinPaks nowadays.

steebo777 10-22-04 10:28 AM

I like ThinPaks :)

Rammsteinfan 10-22-04 03:17 PM

I like thinpaks too... no complaints from me.

WillyShatsWig 10-23-04 02:04 PM

We have a comparison review of the Hellboy Director's Cut and Hellboy Theatrical Cut DVDs here.

Snippet:
Hellboy is another extremely well made comic book adaptation, and the latest in a long line that show Hollywood seems to be finally willing to spend the right kind of money, get the right teams together, and just let them get on with their jobs with minimal interference. Because of this, and despite the massive budget and cutting edge effects, Hellboy really does seem like a personal project for all involved. The constant involvement of Mike Mignola in the whole process, along with Ron Perlman in a career defining role, has allowed del Toro to bring his long-cherished dream project to the screen.

The new Director's Cut release improves the film greatly. While not altering its tone or structure in any grand way, this new version manages, with just a few small additions, to increase our understanding of the characters, making it a definite cut above many comic book adaptations.

WillyShatsWig 10-23-04 02:28 PM

Oh, and yes it is RCE protected.

That's exactly what I thought. The few seconds/minutes here and there really flushed out a few things enough to make the movie more understandable and coherant. I was confused with the theatrical cut.

Rammsteinfan 10-23-04 03:16 PM

I was just happy to see more Kroenen on screen, even if its only him putting on a record. ;)

Jon2 10-24-04 11:47 PM

Does anyone know why it clearly states on the back of the case that it is the extended, UNRATED, director's cut, and when you put in your disc the first thing that pops up on screen is a PG-13 warning?

Why would they put a rating on an unrated movie?
