I'm so sorry guys, but DI is being released in Britain region 2. I missed the small print. Again, I'm sorry I got anyone's hopes up.

No prob--I figured that's what had happened. The UK's ever-reliable Movie Mail lists the R2 release date for April 4th.

I will also concede that a UK release by Universal makes a Criterion edition even less likely.

Cameron 01-26-05 11:21 PM

Criterion is a pipe dream...It won't happen....I also assume that close to the UK date you will see the R1 release...with a 2 month span.

Flay 05-06-05 11:49 AM

Any update on this? It obviously missed the March 28th date.

illennium 05-06-05 12:04 PM

Amazon.co.uk lists a release date of July 11.

ctyankee 05-06-05 02:50 PM

Universal.

Quelle surprise.

btw, decent Double Indemnity drinking game: (if there are any decent drinking games)

Drink some beer every time Fred MacMurray says the word "baby"

Warning: do not do this with shots or you might be visiting the hospital. Besides you won't have time to refill the shot glasses.

fliggil 05-06-05 03:55 PM

I could really use a rerelease soon. I just tried watching my Image release of this and it freezes halfway through the movie every time, freakin crap.

The UK release is just a barebones one isn't it? I'd rather have them actually clean up the video/audio and put a few extras on there. But I guess I'd rather just have the film than wait forever for a special edition.

B5Erik 05-08-05 08:40 PM

I haven't seen the previous version of Double Indemnity, but I've read that it was unspectacular at best in regards to the print quality.

As long as the print quality is good I'll be happy just to be able to watch DI for the first time. Of course, if Universal decides to throw some extras on the DVD I certainly won't argue with them....

As long as it doesn't delay the release by several months.

Gamblor187 05-08-05 09:22 PM

Has there been any restoration work done on Double Indemnity? I'm just wondering because it has popped up recently at a few theaters in the area. I was hoping that this would mean the possibility of a restoration and a new DVD release.

Several months? :) I think that kind of a delay is the least of our worries after waiting this long for the film to be rereleased in reasonable shape. I'd happily wait an extra few months for a quality DVD. Unfortunately we're all waiting indefinitely for ANY DVD.

Looks like Universal is finally letting this one out of the vault.

For those who don't like links:

Double Indemnity
Special Edition
2-Disc Set
Release Date: 08/29/2006
Packaging: Digipak

fliggil 04-14-06 07:24 AM

Thanks Karl, looks like it might finally be time to let go of my copy of the original release.

tofferman 04-14-06 08:56 AM

Knowing how long it has been out of print (I sold my Image dvd years ago when it was rumoured to be released back then), I will believe it when I see it. Also, it wouldn't surprise me if Universal makes it a flipper, if they even have any extras to provide. That would be the ultimate injustice considering this is regarded by many as one of the greatest film noir ever made. Universal, please don't fuck this up!

dx23 04-14-06 10:13 AM

Finally!!!!!!!!

basaro 04-14-06 10:32 AM

Wow, it's about friggin time Universal. As long as they don't f this up, I will be able to retire the old VHS tape. It's hard to get excited about this though, since it's still months away and we all know what universal is (in)capable of.

Johnny Zhivago 04-14-06 11:30 AM

Yeah, color me cynical... I'll believe it when I see it. :fc:

Oh my goodness. Sometimes, I swear the DVD companies are just trying to fuck with me.

I hope this is coming. I want this one so badly.

tofferman 04-14-06 09:53 PM

See...I knew it was too good to be true.

Cameron 04-14-06 10:32 PM

i hope this comes at that time...

shearerchic 04-15-06 05:22 PM

well on the classic attractions database on the digital bits, it still says universal is releasing double idemnity this year.

wewantflair 04-15-06 08:23 PM

I'd bet that they are releasing it this year, as I just this week ponied up for a copy of the old one. *sigh*
