From thedigitalbits.com:

Our industry sources have informed us that Universal is currently working on a Flash Gordon: Special Edition for release on DVD later this year, in honor of the film's 25th anniversary. This would certainly make sense given that the studio has just announced the release of the long-awaited Dune: Extended Edition. We've certainly been dying for a better edition of Flash on DVD here at The Bits for quite a while now (the title was previously released in the U.S. as a non-anamorphic, movie-only DVD from Image Entertainment, but that edition is now out of print).

I was pretty happy when I got home, checked the BITS and found out about this. I knew that sooner or later....a SE would come and I can't wait!! !!
I'll still be hanging onto my OOP disc until then. It's had more plays than just about any other title in the library.

I'll also be hanging on to my OOP disc until a definitive release date is announced. I'll sell it then. The last thing I'd want is to go without one of my most watched titles if this gets stuck in development hell for who knows how long.

The release cant come soon enough. Hopefully it will be fully loaded. A Queen soundtrack of the film would be a nice extra

Should I buy a copy of this at a pawnshop to:
A. Keep (in case the new version doesn't pan out, or is mangled)
B. Sell (are people who would pay OOP prices for this aware of sites like the Bits?)
I passed over a copy of this at a pawnshop today, thinking that the SE had already been released...

Flash Gordon (1980) SE in the works.
Also in the news accompanying the Lynch Dune news, thedigitalbits also reports the following:
As I used to like this film, but I'm not sure it's one of those I'd be interested in today...kinda goes along the same lines as Ice Pirates.
Which kinda makes me wonder, if some of those early '80s campy sci-fi films could be remade today using modern effects and production values. By that I mean, not necessarily remake the movies using the same script, but do them using the "universe" in which they created.
By the way, I was also able to confirm with Universal that a Flash Gordon: Special Edition is currently in production. No specs or release information is available yet, but it's good to know that the 80s sci-fi/camp classic is finally getting the long-awaited attention it deserves on DVD. We'll post more as soon as we hear anything.
