Sigh, I'm a packrat. All discs ever bought still on the shelf. However, i only have maybe 2 or 3 i never watch out of almost 500.

Adrenaline 07-12-04 09:40 AM

In January/February I hit my peak of 182 movies, I ended up selling 92 of them for various reasons.

A)New version coming out down the road (Wouldn't mind waiting a while if it meant I could get a good return on it, like Saving Private Ryan, The Thing etc)

B)Didn't think I'd ever watch it again, like Windtalkers, Bridge on the River of Kwai (I regret selling that one though) etc

C)Asking myself why the heck did I buy it in the first place like The Hulk, Dreamcatcher etc

I'm slowly building back up, I'm at 125 and once I get a job it'll probably double.

Sure, I'd try to get rid of them. Remember, not everybody is interested in getting the "latest and greatest" edition, and would be happy to pick up a movie they like for cheap. One place you can list items for sale is Craigslist (if you have one in your area) - www.craigslist.org.

If you can't sell them, I'd suggest seeing if any of your friends want them for free (spreading goodwill is always nice!) and if not, then donate them to your local library. That way you'll get your shelf space back, and the library can either add them to their collection or sell them. (I am a big one for supporting your local library! It's a good cause.)

I definitely wouldn't keep them just because you don't know what else to do with them - keeping extra junk you don't want just clutters things up!

I have managed to sell all the titles I no longer want manly through ebay. I still have around about 180 titles. On a a similar topic I feel after certain titles come out later this year for example star wars trilogy, scorsese collection, shawshank redemption, thx, duel and aladdin I'll have on the whole all the titles I've ever wanted.

gutwrencher 07-12-04 02:02 PM

since I dont have a collection...but rather a library...most titles stay. a library is not just for enjoyment, but research. it's a historical library, featuring whats essential to me...not anybody else. I'm also a completist when it comes to certian directors and genres.

do I "weed-out" titles? only if it's a serious upgrade, and even then, not very often. I sometimes keep them for "back-ups" just in case. if I do dump them...they are donated to the local hospital and library. I dont buy titles I hate....so there is no collection of "I'll never watch again" discs.

I'm closing in on 1,700 titles. I've dumped maybe 10 over the last year or so.

Daniel L 07-12-04 02:19 PM

GutWrencher, that's quite a collection. I actually live quite close to you, it would be cool to stop in and see the library sometime.

if you make it past the dogs alive...then welcome! -wink-

I've met a few forum-pals the last few months. we usually meet up once a month at the local brewery....down a few pints..and talk film and dvd. join us at the Raccoon River Brewing Company in 2 weeks for beer and hot wings!

Artman 07-12-04 03:05 PM

I'm at about 225, been collecting for six yrs. I've traded in probably 15 or so. I've got a few that i considered getting rid of (captain ron, judge dredd) but I think i'll just keep a container of my lesser-quality films stored elsewhere - than in a few yrs break it out and watch em all!

After this yr I anticipate my DVD purchases to drop quit a bit (due to already having pretty much all the titles i wanted) to just new releases and the occasional SE upgrade.

DVDho78DTS 07-12-04 03:32 PM

I've weeded out titles ever since I started collecting DVDs. I have 11 I'm on the fence with right now. There are 8 semi-recent purchases that I enjoyed the first time but haven't had a chance to check out a second time, and then there are ID4, Gladiator, & Matrix Reloaded; films I can bring myself to watch again.

sracer 07-12-04 06:21 PM

The bulk of my collection was created with a purpose... a digital archive of films that have significance to me. Except for budget titles that are just as cheap to "blind buy" as to rent, I have no intentions of getting rid of discs that I purchase. I have probably given away 10-15 discs... they were budget titles or newer releases that I picked up for under $10.

USBrit 07-12-04 06:31 PM

I definitely do the clearing out on a regular basis. We were pushing 800 (buying binge in '98-'00), so hub and I reached a compromise that we wouldn't exceed the space on two large bookshelves in our den (16 shelves each ~3 feet wide). I try to always keep about a 1/4 to 1/2 shelf open for new releases (we're currently down to ~680).

I personally don't like having extra stuff around the house (not a pack rat) so if there's a strong liklihood that a DVD won't get watched, it's history (sold, donated, given away). I'm the same way with unread books and old CDs (unless they're clearly a sentimental favorite). I don't feel the need to own every criterion, or all sequels to a movie if we only liked the first, though I do alot of upgrading (that doesn't really count though right?) I completely understand and respect the mentality of collecting (and never parting with a movie), but that's just not me.

I keep a list of all the DVDs I've sold and most of them are OK movies, just not favorites. It's weird to look at the list once in a while. I might get an occasional pang of "why did I sell that?" but mostly I wonder why I bought it in the first place.

JimRochester 07-12-04 06:56 PM

Always selling and trading movies I won't watch at least once a year. I'm running out of room and money to keep everything. I buy most of my stuff used for <$10. So if I trade it back in for $6 it was the cost of a rental with no late fee or return due date.

bodomnet 07-12-04 08:24 PM

I only have about 150, But I cant recall ever selling 1 DVD.
I do buy alot of movies that I will buy once or twice, but so far haven't needed money enough to consider selling them.
Also as others have said I never know when I might want to watch it.. or what my friends will want to watch. It's nice to say "Yeah, I have that" - :)

Yakuza Bengoshi 07-13-04 06:59 AM

I sell off titles that (1) I didn't particularly enjoy, or (2) are likely to be upgraded in quality or extras before I watch it again. According to my records I've sold off 411 titles to date.

sparks 07-13-04 07:50 AM

I'm putting up 51 DVD's tonite on eBay. They're all sci fi/horror and will be sold as a "lot of 51" including "Alien Legacy" w/the 5th disc. Most have been viewed only once and some are still sealed.

None of them are foreign or bootlegs and all are from my personal collection. I have that many I haven't even viewed yet so it'll be good doing a little culling! :D

louiseb 07-13-04 08:54 AM

I periodically go through and get rid of DVDs I don't think I would ever watch again, even if a friend wanted to see it. I usually give them away to friends and family, haven't sold any. I also have a space problem, almost all my DVDs are in Sorice cabinets and almost all I've changed to slim cases, but things are still full. I need to figure out a solution for all my TV sets that seem to be growing.

wordtoyamotha 07-13-04 09:49 AM

I am CONSTANTLY selling old titles while purchasing new ones. Sometimes for upgrades, a lot of them are sold because they're non-anamorphic.

One reason I sell old titles is because financially it makes me feel better about buying new titles. If you are a bargain hunter (most of us are), you can usually get 85-110% of the purchase price on eBay or half.

Abob Teff 07-13-04 12:39 PM

I've never really been one to get rid of movies I've collected. I've dabbled in trading and sold off a couple here and there. However, I am getting ready to offload almost my entire collection to use as inventory for the business that I am trying to start. Painful as it is, I figure it shows commitment on my part; and if it works out I can always re-buy later down the road.

fryinpan1 07-13-04 01:04 PM

My collection is closing in on 250 and I always sell the DVDs that will not be viewed again or have an upcoming better release. I sell them on Ebay and take what I can get for them.

Jah-Wren Ryel 07-13-04 11:55 PM

Although I keep most of my acquisitions, the ones that I do weed out and are not utter trash, go right to the local library. Support your library, and stick it to the studios at the same time.

bsktballDude1 07-14-04 12:02 AM

I usually keep the dvds I buy, but recently I've been going through my collection and getting rid of a title there and there. Mostly because they are bad movies that I don't know why in the hell I bought them in the first place.

Hank1215 07-14-04 07:39 AM

I am dangerously approaching 1500 discs, and have them spread out on different book cases in my media/computer room. I really need to think about getting some kind of extra collection insurance, should some un-natural act of god befall my home. I still have every DVD I have ever got, except ones that I have upgraded from because of the evil "special edition"!(Just when you think you got the best, something better comes along. So what do I do with the copies after the upgrade, GIFTS! Birthday, Christmas, Bar Mitzvah....I haven't had to pay money for a gift in a long time! Sure sometimes when you hand someone a copy of "Underworld" they tell you "Gee, you shouldn't have", but I made someone happy when they got my copy "Saving Private Ryan". So I guess my collection will continue to grow.

Daniel L 07-28-04 10:21 AM

I have been buying back a number of titles lately. Usually they're things that I regreted selling back in the day. I do feel a bit stupid buying a movie twice, though. Anyone else do this?

A while back, I did a fairly major purge (almost half) my collection, which brought me down to around 120 DVDs or so. I realized that just because I'd enjoyed a movie once didn't mean that I was necessarily going to watch it again. I also realized that I enjoyed more having a more streamlined collection rather than a large, uneven one.

So now I have a collection with my real favorites and movies that I think are particularly re-watchable. I got rid of some that sure, maybe I will want to watch again someday, but that are most likely going to be easy to rent, like Forrest Gump. On the other hand, I was more generous with keeping foreign or obscure titles that I thought I might want to see again, since those will be harder to find elsewhere.

One part of my collection that really didn't change much in the purge was my TV series sets. I find those quite re-watchable, as it's easy to fit in an episode here and there even if I don't have time to see a full movie.

It was a bit weird clearing out so many titles, because I have a strong pack-rat tendency, but it was pretty straightforward and satisfying once I clarified in my own mind what I was keeping the DVDs *for*. I'm not "collecting" them for the sake of having a large collection, I'm keeping a bunch of titles for my own convenient viewing pleasure. Since then, I've done a much better job about being selective in my purchases, too.

Ditto for me, a cleansing feels good once in a while..

MrVette99 07-28-04 10:55 AM

You were able to sell DVDs. My crap I can't give away. Luckily Blockbuster has the deal where you can turn one in and buy a new release for 12.99.

I took in my biggest stinker "Druids" for the deal. The cashier asked me how the film was, and I said it's the worst most awful movie I've ever seen. It's still on their previewed rack for sale. HEHEHEHEHE! I pity the poor unsuspecting fool that takes his/her chance on the film purchase.
