Kolchak, The Night Stalker

Any plans for this series to be released on DVD? Thanks.

That should answer your question.

I've got this circled on my calander for an late August pick up. It's a double feature with The Night Strangler. The second movie I didn't care for too much, but gotta have The Night Stalker anyway.

emhello 06-22-04 06:25 PM

I've had the movies for a long time (from the first release of the DVD). Just waiting for the rest of the TV series to be released! Thanks for the info.

Daniel McKenzey 06-22-04 11:46 PM

MGM has the two movies, but the series is owned by Universal, so they would be the ones releasing it. There were only 20 episodes of this short-lived but awesome series, so they could release the whole thing in one shot. Right now this is my most wanted TV series on DVD.

$13 at Amazon, which is an awesome price. By the way, looks like you can get the complete series for about $30 on ebay. Anyone know what the quality is like?

$9.12 at DDD, I just ordered it. Too bad it is a pre-release so not part of the 20% sale...

If it is the Columbia house series, I thought it was pretty good. I wanted them so bad about five years ago that I paid about $25 a tape w/ shipping and handling. ouch. Then, when I broke up with my boyfriend, he ended up with them. double ouch.

The DVD sets are available for about $30 on ebay - they're probably burned from the CH videotapes.

I see on DVD Empire that the running time of the new release is longer. 164 minutes for the new one compared to 147 minutes of the original. Any one know what new content there maybe? Could it be the rumored extended version of The Night Strangler with the missing Jimmy Stacks scene? Also, does anyone know if they're going to fix the scene by the pool in The Night Stalker. In this scene Carl is paged to pickup the phone but on the disc the page calling him to pickup the phone is not heard. He just walks over and picks up the phone as if has ESP and knows there's a call for him.

Any details on Night Stalker/Strangler August release?

I checked DVD Basen and several DVD vendors looking for details on the upcoming Night Stalker/Night Strangler re-release by MGM. Even Amazon has very little info and says this is 2 DVDs, but I expect it's a DVD-10 (DS-SL) or DVD-9 (SS-DL).

Looking through another thread and at Amazon, all I could tell is there is a commentary track and interview featurettes. Did they remaster the transfer, add any scenes, or anything else to make this worth re-purchasing?

If I had known the Anchor Bay edition was out of print, I would've put mine on eBay long ago to recoup the $27 I paid for this at Ken Crane's. However, with the new release all over eBay, these seem to have trouble selling now, although somebody lucked out and got $30 for one very recently.

One could hope that Universal will try to capitalize on the fact a new "Night Stalker" will be on TV.

why not just keep the info in this thread instead of starting a new opne

Peep 07-27-05 11:29 PM

Wow, it seems like I watched a million episodes of this as a little kid. Were there really only 20 episodes?!?

I've been buying way to much TV on DVD lately, so maybe I'll just rent these over time.

Gojira69 07-28-05 11:00 AM

TVshowsOnDVD now confirms it too:

Oct 4th is going to be an expensive day for me!

Buford T Pusser 07-31-05 12:04 PM

I remember loving this show at the time. Can't wait to see how it held up for me.

salamander2 07-31-05 12:41 PM

I do hope this wount be the edited "syndicated" edition.

LorenzoL 08-10-05 10:54 AM

tvshowsondvd.com has posted some more news in regards to the dvd set of the series.

http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3876

Geofferson 08-10-05 11:00 AM

This 3 disc set will include all 20 episodes of the series (1028 mins), but not the 2 TV movies which MGM released last year. Specs include a Full Frame (1.33:1) transfer, and English mono audio, along with English/Spanish subtitles. The set will be packaged in 3 slim cases with an outer box to hold them together. Suggested retail price? A mere $29.98.
Bummer.

I don't own it and would rather have it included with the series rather than having to pay $10 for another DVD.

renaldow 08-10-05 02:55 PM

If you were a true fan, you would've bought the movies when they were new releases :P

Do any other TV series sets include the movie(s) that inspired them? I don't think either of the Night flicks were meant to be pilots for a series.

Christi P 08-10-05 04:09 PM

tvshowsondvd.com updated the news item - the actual price is $39.98

Additional bummer. They should knock money off the set to account for the two movies not being included!

And why do you have to be a fan to want the movies with the set? People aren't allowed to make blind purchases?

Knock money off of what? You're not paying for the movies, so there's nothing to knock off.

Okay so the series is owned by Universal and the pilots are owned by MGM, how was Universal going to release them? Also, since so many of us bought the pilots for $9 for 2 beautiful movies, why should we want to shell out money for them again?

btw, they did "knock off" money since the pilots were not needed in the set. That's why is only $40 msrp, which means you'll be able to get it for about $30.

Fin.

I was actually referring to the original price quote of 29.99 that was raised to 39.99. The extra ten bucks....aww, fer get it! It wasn't that big of a point anyway!

Christi P 08-10-05 06:40 PM

I've never seen 'Kolchak'. I don't like outright horror, but I do like moody suspense shows like the X-Files (the early years).

Would Kolchak be a good blind buy? Has it aged well?

SciFi channel does a marathon of these shows every 5-6 weeks or so. Record a few and see what they're like.

critterdvd 08-11-05 12:09 AM

for $25 I might check it out

The show tends to have a more lighthearted approach than the X-Files. I definitely wouldn't describe it as "moody suspense". Probably more in the vain of the 'comedy' episodes of X-Files.

Even though I never watched it before, I think I will pick this up blind. I will probably wait, though, to see if the episodes contain syndication edits or the original broadcast versions.

rw2516 08-14-05 10:06 AM

The tapes Universal made for CH were uncut. Universal will most likely use the same masters. Four episodes were never syndicated but spliced into two movies. The syndication package included 16 eps. and the 2 movies. That is why you never see those 4 on sci-fi channel. The CH set had all 20 eps. uncut as they originally aired.
