ROTK EE pushed back to December

EW is reporting Return of the King Extended Edition is being pushed back to December in order to finish the commentaries. Sorry if this is a duplicate thread, I couldn't find any.

''Lord of the Rings'' fans awaiting the now-traditional late-fall release of the extended version DVD of the latest ''Rings'' movie will have to wait a little longer this year. Trade publication Video Business reports that New Line won't be releasing the ''Return of the King'' special edition DVD until December. In the past, the director's-cut versions of the movies had been released in mid-November, allowing plenty of time for holiday gift shoppers. New Line sources tell Video Business that the shorter window this year won't matter -- there's already a high enough advance awareness of the lengthy disc (which, with 49 new minutes of footage, means ''ROTK'' will run more than four hours), and besides, the theatrical cut, released two weeks ago, is already the year's top-selling home video. Why the delay, then? Apparently, it took longer than usual to gather all the principals to record commentary tracks, the cast having long since dispersed to other projects. Guess it's hard to keep the hobbits down on the farm after they've seen Minas Tirith.

yeah, it was reported in that other thread:

but thanks for the new report on it. always good to read different sources.

Also, there was never a set release date for it to be "pushed back" from, nor does the text you qoute state that either.

movielib 06-09-04 10:31 AM

49 extra minutes! That will make it 250 minutes. I hate waiting longer but I know it will be worth it.

The three EEs will total 11 hours and 21 minutes.

Technically... the Director's Cut versions have been released in August. ;)

Kind of a bummer about the delay. Should be worth the wait though. This is surley going to be one of the greatest DVD sets ever released. Probably for the better, I'll be spending my November going through the Seinfeld DVD's anyway.

Also, there's probably a production capacity problem with regard to the polystone statue that will be included in the gift set. Due to the major spike in demand, Sideshow Weta has been having major problems with hitting the ship dates for their LOTR line of polystone busts and statues.

Never a set date, but the articles about the TE mentioned that th EE would come out in the normal frame of the past 2 (Nov.) rather than getting bumped up like the TE did (to May from Aug for the 1st two).

So not officially bumped, but bumped from what was originally expected.

Kind of sucks, but it's just a month.

tanman 06-09-04 11:44 AM

So do we know what the Statue will be of?

fumanstan 06-09-04 11:47 AM

:(

REL77 06-09-04 11:48 AM

I dont mind waiting for quality work.... Hopefully we will find out what the statue is soon too

Not yet, but it will probably be one of the many listed in this thread:

I don't mind waiting, as long as they do it right and it will save on double dipping.

Well Jackson himself said they weren't Director's cuts of the films. they are the Extended Editions. Directors Cut would imply that he perfers them over the theater versions out... Which he doesn't.

That's what he was saying, by saying that the directors cuts of the first two were released in August (which is when the FOTR and TTT TE's came out). The EEs of the first two came out in Nov.

The statue will be of a big fat Peter Jackson sitting on a pile of money ... of course not wearing shoes.

The EE's are never considered the Director's cut! The TE's have always been.

ah my bad. :o

Yup, TE's are directors cut. EE's are icing on the cake.

I don't mind waiting. One month isn't too long.

This is the first time I had read how much was going to be added to the EE. Can't wait to see it!

Cygnet74 06-09-04 04:48 PM

Why does Peter Jack$on keep revising his films? ;)

Dr. DVD 06-09-04 04:52 PM

I see a Christmas Day EE marathon on the Horizon.

Seeker 06-09-04 05:22 PM

demonio 06-09-04 05:26 PM

OldBoy 06-09-04 06:14 PM

Kal-El 06-09-04 06:22 PM

My B-day is in Nov, so I don't have the x-mas factor to make the extra month of wait more bearable. :D

It would have been wiser to have a November release date. As everyone knows christmas shopping starts on black friday. I'm sure if it's out then it would fly off the shelves. As it is, it will be a last minute gift idea.

rexinnih 06-10-04 08:17 AM

One month later is no problem. It'll still be mine.

sullise 06-22-04 11:14 PM

I have no problem waiting on this. I MAY pick up the normal copy (seeing as I have the other two movies in both the normal release and the EE w/statues. :)

Why? I only lend out the NON-EE versions..:)

Get Me Coffee 09-06-04 10:10 PM

Christmas 2002 I received the first EE from my mil and last year I received the second, also from her. I wasn't expecting to get ROTK EE until xmas anyway, because I wanted her to complete the tri-fecta. I'm also scheduled to have my home theater complete by late Nov/early Dec so this should work out perfectly. I'm one of the few that doesn't like theaters and always wait for the DVD release. In the case of LOTR, I've always waited for the EE version. I'll be having a great HT breaking in party in late December where we'll re-watch the first two editions and then watch ROTK for the first time. That'll be one great weekend.

No, I think it's December 14th.

Fok 09-07-04 12:37 AM

Not a problem here, as long as they take the time to do it right. Not like other studio's who rush out releases and then make us double dip.

Get Me Coffee 09-07-04 06:26 AM

Thanks for the dates...

QuiGonJosh 09-07-04 06:27 AM

14th is good for me...
