The NZ pricing sucks major ass, they only ever sell retail ($40), and their idea of a special is $3 or $4 off  Ok sometimes Whitcoulls do a special on the first week, but it's still nothing compared to what I can get it for overseas.

Hell, a Simpsons season retails for NZ$120 and I got the R1 for under NZ$50. Buffy retails for an insane NZ$180 and I got it for NZ$65 (I know the Buffy price has come down recently, but it had been out for a good 3 years before that happened). If that's not saving money, then I don't know what is. All you need to do is spend some time comparing prices, and you could get it cheaper than here by miles, even with the international shipping (with DVDSoon and CD-Wow, you can avoid shipping costs altogether!).

Plus the dollar isn't doing bad at all against the American, lately. It sucked when it was at 45 cents ages ago, but now it's staying around 66 cents which is really good. I usually go with the Canadian retailers because our dollar is even better against them. But I always compare them both to make sure.

Thanks for that. I hadn't checked out DVDSoon or CD-Wow, but I will. I mainly buy off Amazon cause as you rightly pointed out it's still cheaper than $40 her in NZ and I have found them very fast and reliable. Although I have picked up quite a few R4's on special for under $20 lately. I tried DVD Empire the other day but they wanted a faxed copy of my CC and I can't be bothered with that sort of mucking around, I just wanna put in my CC number and spend!!

Just went over 300 DVD, I have been buying DVD for 4 years and 3 months. At this rate it will take me another 8 years to go over 1000.

I only buys movies I will really watch over and over again within a one year. This has helped me to keep my DVD budget in check.

I am going to pick up I Love Lucy S2 and The Passion of Christ tomorrow, then Star Wars later this month.

That will make only about 12 DVDs bought from June 1st to the end of Sept.

And I do not Double Dip.

Big Worms 09-01-04 08:39 PM

Wow a 1000 DVD's. I remeber when I was happy I went over 100. Now I look forward to going over 200.

I will probably never reach 1000. I only buy movies that I really like and would watch over again. Even at the moment, if I bought all the movies I have on my wish list, it would put me over slightly 300.

RoadToPerdition 05-08-06 06:50 PM

I'm at 2,995

I know I have over 1000 but I've stopped keeping track. I just throw everything into DVD cases now

lordwow 05-08-06 08:07 PM

I just broke 200, and like 99% of mine. I don't see the point in buying a bunch of movies just because they're there.

Wow funny ready this now.

I am at 500.

Uh-oh Big Worms, you're seeing how much it's like crack now, aren't ya? :)

EdTheRipper 05-08-06 09:26 PM

I'm over 2200 at this point. Not sure of an exact count at the moment.

emhello 05-08-06 09:32 PM

I gotta be over 1200 now but I've even stopped adding them to my list. :(

starving dvder 05-09-06 05:51 AM

2,221 dvds.

darkside 05-09-06 06:19 AM

We are over a 1000 now if you count all the kids DVDs. I probably don't even have a 100 of those listed.

TNAJason 05-10-06 08:12 PM

I'm over 1,000. DVDs are my addiction. I'm gonna go bankrupt buying them. But I love em so..... :/

gutwrencher 05-10-06 10:28 PM

A rare Gutdate...I mean update. Yeah, I'm still slutting around with dvds. Just not as heavy as the last 4 or 5 years. My library building is just going at a slower pace. I have well over 2,200 titles, but instead of 6 or 8 a week...I'm down to 2 or 3. Hell, I only pop into the forum every once in a while when before I just HAD to check in every few hours it seemed.

All thanks to my new passion and now...serious hobby...The rivers. I'd rather, at this point, invest my extra cash in kayaks, kayaks and more kayaks. Add 1 canoe. Actually, I had to buy a rec yak, a whitewater yak and a touring yak for overnight and multi-day camping trips in the wilderness. Those plus all the new gear I'm getting like personal GPS, whitewater skirts and $200 paddles....well, it's sucking me dry! And no, it won't slow down in winter. It's the best time to see and photograph Bald Eagles.:p

And NO....I have no desire to watch dvds in the woods or even read a nunsploitation novel.

Oh shit! I forgot my noseclips!!!

I'm rather curious about you guys who have 1,000+ DVDs. What are you going to do with them all now that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disc are here?

I have a meager roughly 55 DVDs myself, culled from a collection that at one time was as large as 70 DVDs. Yeah, I have a lot of DVDs. Well, I used to think I had a lot of DVDs, but clearly I really, really don't. I still love my DVD shelf though. :)

RoadToPerdition 05-10-06 11:23 PM

The HD-DVD/Blu-Ray isn't gonna change anything for me until they decide on one universal format.

Mr. Cornell 05-10-06 11:26 PM

So you plan on continuing to buy movies in a format that is about to become obsolete?

starving dvder 05-11-06 06:58 AM

Yep. :)

Its not like we haven't been double dipping on DVDs for years. I am doing the same thing with HD DVD. If the movie is one I want in HD DVD I will sell the DVD version and buy it in HD DVD. In some cases I will stick with the DVD it will be a movie by movie basis.

Ummm....so just because a new format is coming out, DVD is "about to become obsolete?" It's going to be a LONG time before Blu-Ray/HD-DVD overtake DVD, if ever. How many times has this been addressed?

But to answer a question that's been asked many times before, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD doesn't affect my DVD buying one bit. I'm at 1136 and counting.

Unless I've misread, regular DVDs will be upconverted or at the very least backwards compatible with HD-DVD players so I don't see where regular DVDs would be obsolete in the near future if ever. Another point for me is the older movies, like Citizen Kane, Sunset Blvd, etc. there's not much to improve on in that department. There's only so much you can do to make those look and sound better. So, for me, HD would really only be applicable for new films.

Yes and they will eventually join my laserdiscs on the archive shelves. Of course no one is 100% certain that HD or Blu-Ray will survive either. No way I'm NOT going to buy a movie I want when there is no given date for an HD release.

Brent L 08-15-06 11:49 PM

I finally hit the 1,000 mark today (Simpsosn Season 8), and then also pushed it up to 1,006 while I was at it.

tonyjg 08-16-06 12:06 AM

'found out' that I've got a collection of around 1100 - whilst updating DVDProfiler over the weekend :( (embarrassment)

Actually thought that I was around 900.

My collection is probably 45% Region 1 (US/Canada bought) / 50% Region 4 (Australian) and 5% Region 2 (UK).

I only wish that I had started purchasing DVDs NOW - with the fall in prices of the majority of my collection - I probably would have saved 1/2 of the price that paid (granted - I don't buy ANY TITLES over $A14 anymore !!)

And I consider myself "picky" I rarely buy Hollywood's weekly releases. I seem to average a little over 100 a year since I got my first DVD player so I can definitely see me getting up 1000 someday but by then all these guys will have like 4000.

Holy crap. I'm up to like 1009 now and its only 2 years 2 months later! How did I manage to buy 435 DVDs in that little time?
