its wierd when someone says they are picky and have 1000 dvds. i thought i was picky and i have like 100.

Al Padrino 06-07-04 11:08 PM

I would take it those are the people who've got a wide range as far as taste in movies go. When you don't limit yourself to one genre, it's not too difficult to like / love hundreds or thousands of movies.

atari2600 06-07-04 11:21 PM

true. but are they still 'picky'?

mike45 06-07-04 11:24 PM

Just checked my DVD profiler, 1073. But, I bought my first DVD player the first year they hit the market.

I'm sure they are to a certain extent. Though I did check through some posters' collections who were over 1000 limit and I have to admit there quite a few movies I would never buy, but that's just me. I'm at 575 right now. And I consider myself "picky" I rarely buy Hollywood's weekly releases. I seem to average a little over 100 a year since I got my first DVD player so I can definitely see me getting up 1000 someday but by then all these guys will have like 4000.

Trust me, I see some movies in people's collection and I wouldn't even use the DVD as a coaster I don't mean to be an elitist. I'm sure there are some movies in my collection people would never buy.

I go through my collection every once and a while and look at each title and ask my self if I really need that movie. That's why I have over 800 DVDs. If I had to, I could get it down to 700 that I could never get rid of. But that's it.

it's called personal taste, and that part of the issue should not even have to be brought up.

atari2600 06-08-04 01:28 AM

but there ARE people on this forum who will buy dvds for the sake of buying them - whether they like the movie or not.

aam1 06-08-04 02:05 AM

I have just over 200 and, according to dvdprofiler, there is only about 100 left that I want. 1000 seems a long way away.

victant 06-08-04 02:48 AM

Count me in on that oxymoron group: picky and in the 1k club. ;)

Zodiac_Speaking 06-08-04 06:45 AM

Holy crap! I have 300 or so (not including box sets or tv seasons) and I think I have too many. But I like all of them that's why i bought them. But how do you store 1000 dvds?????? And Box sets????

skipnet 06-08-04 06:48 AM

1388 here, as of right now. Wait 30 seconds and it will change :)

pdjennings

The first impression that you might have about pdjennings's collection of over 2800 titles is "Wow, he must have everything!" But comparing his collection to mine of just over 200, I find a lot of titles I have that he doesn't. So, I ask myself, "would I trade my collection for pdjennings's?" I'm disallowing "sell off what you don't want to buy what you do" or "replace what you're missing" tactics; this is a straight-up trade, no substitutions.

I'd have to say no. Sure, it'd be nice to have that full run of Deep Space Nine or fill out my missing Oz seasons. But give up my Hitchcock titles, Marx Brothers, Red Dwarf, Cosmos, The Manchurian Candidate, etc. ? No thanks.

atari2600 06-08-04 07:34 AM

rkillgore: i made that exact same comment about a year ago (about not trading my collection straight up for collections 10x bigger than mine). 100% agreed!

JimRochester 06-08-04 07:48 AM

I'm a heavy churner. I have over 600 but have sold or traded at least another 1000. 600 is plenty for me to have on hand, plus I'm running out of room. Of course the number continues to creep up but I'll buy anywhere from 2 - 5 a week and sell or trade 1 - 3.

matome 06-08-04 08:20 AM

I've got around 1600. I don't rent, so a lot of blind buys, and since I'm pretty easy to please, I usually convince myself I liked it enough to warrant the purchase. :) Of course some were just horrible (Gummo, Critical Care, etc.), but I don't mind keeping them around if someone wants to pick it off the shelves to watch. The only time I get rid of discs is when I upgrade, in which case I give them to my brother.

marty888 06-08-04 08:37 AM

Sitting with about 1400 right now - almost exactly 4 years after getting my first DVD player.

superdeluxe 06-08-04 08:41 AM

Doesnt that Austin dude have like over 5000 dvds?

Anyways I have like 111 dvds..and don't ever see myself having more.

My collection sucks heh :)

Austin54 06-08-04 09:18 AM

I just saw the topic. I have around five to six thousand and around 20000 VHS tapes. Before this starts another war, the pictures were posted a few weeks ago

I have 1,165

runnersdialzero 06-08-04 09:30 AM

Austin and Jennings, I don't see any logical reason for you to have this many DVDs. You two are definitely DVD Whores. It sounds more like a problem then an addiction. And even if I had all the money in the world. I still wouldn't have that many. Why even risk buying a crap film like Gummo just to see if you like it? Netflix is your friend. I mean, if you have 2000 to 6000 DVDs, that pretty much says you buy everything that comes out, whether you saw it or not. Why? Even if you are buying simply for collecting purposes, how often does one of your DVDs turn into a Salo? Just about never. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but that's just my opinion.

I have about 600 and started collecting in may of 2001(geez thats 200 a year,i need profesional help lol) i figure in about 2 years i will be up to a 1000,i have a wide range of tastes(everything from the sound of music to the dawn of the dead lol) so i am kinda easy to please when it comes to watching movies.I just love movies and am not as critical of a lot of movies as some people are, not to offend someone who says that they believe that there are only 200 or 300 movies ever made that are worth owning(I am sure to them that there really is only 2 0r 3 hundred movies worth owning)but for me i believe there are thousands of movies worth owning

ChrisHicks 06-08-04 09:40 AM

my goal is to reach 2000 by the end of the year. then I'll weed out some(maybe).

LOSTinSPACE 06-08-04 09:50 AM

I have about 1600 titles, sort of beyond the point of control both counting and storage wise.

I buy most of my DVDs either because I want to see the movie [for the First time] or because I want the movie for my collection [i.e I have seen it before]. I dont go to the cinema anymore and I dont have a cable or satellite movie channel - so I think the cost of a DVD is an acceptable price to pay for me and my wife to watch a movie. I bought the majority of my DVDs over 2 years ago.

The last 2 years I probably only added about 1 title a week to my collection. I love having a large collection of DVDs - both as a source of entertainment and also just as a library. I also enjoy designing new covers and changing the covers for custom covers. Its a good hobby. Unfortunately I have to store a lot of my DVDs in Case Logic Folders as I just dont have the space to put them on Shelves any more.

Like a few people here I am starting to rethink my purchasing and collection size decisions. I recently started to whittle my collection back and hope to get it down to around 1000 titles. Which is really the space I have on the shelves in the living room for the regular amaray cases. My plan at the moment is to have 3 levels to my collection - a core of about 400 titles that I consider essential - about 400 more that are borderline essentials, that 800 is my main collection and about 200 DVDs that are to watch. If I like those they may enter the main collection but most likely they will be traded on quickly.

So add me to the over 1000 group!
