Ella Enchanted - Fullscreen only
From DavisDVD:
This movie was so surprisingly good. I'm quite upset at this backassward move by Miramax.
Anyone with a few minutes.... BV/Miramax Home Video Feedback Form. I don't we'll change their plans... but it can't hurt to try.
Just announced from Miramax Home Entertainment is the Shrek-like fractured fairy tale Ella Enchanted, starring Anne Hathaway. Due on on August 24th, the DVD will come with a fullscreen-only transfer, DD5.1, an audio commentary track (with Hathaway, Hugh Darcy, and director Tommy O'Haver), "The Magical World of Ella Enchanted" featurette, deleted & extended scenes, a "Red Carpet" premiere special, "It's Not Just Make Believe" music video, Prince Charmont's Fan Club set-top game, trailers and "Happily Ever After" DVD-ROM features. Retail is $29.99.

I didnt get a chance to see this in the theatre but I have been wanting to see it and this is bad news since I will not buy a full screen only version. hopefully they change their minds or atleast offer a widescreen in a different region code.

I sent them a politely worded complaint. Hopefully that'll allow for them to read the whole (brief) message instead of just deleting it and ignoring it.

I sent my complaint. I should have specified OAR, but I said widescreen. After all, the OAR is definitely not fullscreen.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and this news REALLY pisses me off. Yet another reason to hate Miramax. I swear, they are a bunch of wankers...

From DVDFile.com:
"The perfect film for the whole family!", on August 24th Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release the sorta-hit Ella Enchanted in not very family-friendly full frame only. Loaded with special features, extras include audio commentary with director Tommy O'Haver and stars Anne Hathaway and Hugh Darcy, "The Magical World of Ella Enchanted" featurette, deleted scenes, premiere footage, a music video, interactive game and trailers. Why no widescreen? Who knows? In any case, retail will list for $29.95.

The question is, was it originally filmed at 4:3 and then matted for the theatrical release? If so then that's not bad... not acceptable... but not bad.
Edit to add: I wonder what the sales numbers for Snow Dogs and The Country Bears which were also Buena Vista FF only releases. They couldn't have been good...

not so fast. i called the 800# on disney dvd's packaging (for tech assistance), and started to complain. but the operator said the specs on her computer regarding this title was that it would come out aug. 24th in a 1.85:1 ratio.
perhaps another goofed press release? i hope that it gets the treatment this cute girl, i mean film, deserves.

To add to the confusion, dvdpricesearch added this title to their site today and the details state fullscreen (as far as I could see, DVDTalk's price search hasn't yet added this title). Buy.com lists it as "widescreen" presentation, but Amazon only has a fullscreen version available for preorder.
I really hope the fullscreen only announcement was a mistake. Personally I think all P&S releases are a waste, but if they insist on giving consumers a "choice" there's no excuse for not making the OAR available. Sometimes I really think we're going backwards (the Ransom "SE" for example).

Maybe like what Warner did with Cats and Dogs, they were planning on it being fullscreen only but then came to their senses and added a widescreen version.
