I think my operative word was *mainstream*. 'Passion' DVD sales will easily be in the millions - I can't think of any Criterion that you could say that about.

Not to pick a fight with you, but you need to read my original post a little more closely. I was trying to think of a previous barebones release that had a SRP as high as this one. The Criterion Armageddon, while mainstream, would hardly be called barebones.

Why isn't the studio releasing any details of a "Special Edition". I would like to see a 3 to 4 disc set on this, as this was certainly one of the best movies in some time to be chronciled. There is so much information out there. If they only pulled a "New Line" and said, "yes, we are releasing the DVD on Aug. 31, but be aware that we are also planning a more elaborate special edition as we speak."
This is one title were Special Features are needed greatly

They did say that. I can't find a link to a specific article, but at the time of the announcement for the disc it was well-publicized that there will be an expansive special edition probably around Easter or Christmas of next year.

To coincide with this release, South Park is releasing their episode "The Passion of the Jew" on dvd the same day.

Also on the disc are the religious themed episodes "Christian Rock Hard", and "Red Hot Catholic Love".

this is a movie about Christ & they still treat it as a merchandise...
talk about respect

i dunno, maybe i'm hoping too much or maybe being too sensitive

i love what they are doing. the more they can milk this the more it shows that they just want money. it lessens the reason of christianity more and more. religion is supposed to be a personal thing, but now it's nothing more than a marketing ploy and a play on peoples emotions.

roger_d 06-14-04 08:38 AM

I'll just wait for the SE

Admiral7 06-14-04 10:27 AM

This is some of the most absurd, ridiculous drivel I've heard. You can't believe they're trying to milk in on "church people." Hmmm, a movie about the crucifixion of the Christ and they're actually targeting church people. Wow! That IS odd.

And somehow releasing two different versions of a DVD about said Crucifixion actually "lessens the reason of Christianity more and more." Have any of you actually seen the film, cause if so, you obviously didn't "get it."

Agreed. Questioning the validity of the christian faith because a dvd is being released in two versions?

Not even worth responding to.

I do remember that the fullscreen is a separate DVD, but it takes up space that should be filled with DTS.

Why I'm against a fullscreen release of The Passion is because it's a film that should NEVER be shown in fullscreen. It'll have way too much of a different impact if shown in fullscreen. This is why I hope when it makes it's TV debut that it's shown in hi-def anamorohic.

Get Me Coffee 08-23-04 09:48 PM

Ok so it's Aug 31st that this movie is coming out. Does anyone have the specs?

LuisL 08-24-04 12:53 AM

the passion of the jew comes out the same doesn't it???

i'll be renting both either way.

LasVegasMichael 08-24-04 01:03 AM

I, too, am going to wait for an SE. This film certainly deserves a 2D SE treatment, and I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.

Seperate widescreen/fullscreen discs (this movie SHOULD NOT BE SEEN IN FOOLSCREEN. It ruins it) with DTS and trailers.

That's it.

SideShow 08-24-04 01:35 AM

Releases like this make a huge case for renting (ala Netflix) that a lot of DVD collectors are so against.

Ditto.

wm lopez 08-24-04 05:46 AM

I bet the average church goer will buy FULL SCREEN.
And the average non-believer will buy WIDE SCREEN.

 Why?

majorjoe23 08-24-04 07:42 AM

I won't answer for wm lopez, but just as this was a film that marketed itself to people who don't see many movies, I would guess this will be many people's first DVD purchase. Plenty of these first timer buyers won't be educated on the benefits of widescreen (or like so many, won't care), and will just buy the full screen disc because "it fills up my TV."

Here here. I'm holding out for the special edition too. Awesome film, and the story behind its production (and the controversy surrounding its release) is worthy of a disc all to itself.
