The movie is 127 minutes long. How exactly are they supposed to fit both Full Screen and Widescreen transfers, plus DTS audio, on a single dual layer disc? That's gonna be a really tight fit on a DVD-9 unless they make it a DVD-18 disc.
|
Fox has been doing a lot of flippers lately-Phone Booth and In America are two that immediately come to mind. The worst part is generally the widescreen side isn't even labeled-the full screen just references the other side.

This title would be perfect for promoting OAR.
I could imagine the ads now: Widescreen or Pan & Scan: What Would Jesus View? or The Lord COMMANDS you to watch the film in its Original Aspect Ratio! |

I think having movie-only and SE's is a good idea. A lot of people will just be interested in the movie and will rent or buy the movie-only DVD. On the other hand, fans of the film will probably want the DVD with more special features (I'm one of them). For a film with such a divided audience (most people either liked it or despised it, with very few probably admiring the film as a work of art, unfortunately), it's a wise decision. However, the decision to put out a P&S version is stupid. The film will be unwatchable without the full width... it's way too dependant on the Panavision framing! |
I want to see no burned in subs and more extras. I will wait until next year for the full SE.

Living in the Bible Belt, people around here will make this the highest selling dvd ever. The "hypocritical" church fanatics...the ones who say you shouldn't watch movies, go to watch this...which is in fact still just a movie. It will also be the only dvd they have ever or will ever own.
|
My Friend have called me weird, but I think that "The Passions of Christ" is a movie were I believe that the movie belongs without many specailfeatures... maybe just a trailer and some interviews with Mel Gibson.
|
There were a few hour long documentaries/making of's on TV so I think they could include those...

I'm in, ready to sell up and double dip.

Every time you watch a pan/scan DVD, the baby Jesus cries.
But seriously, I hate! the Fox dual sided DVDs...they do not fare too well in the rental market. The top side gets scuffed a lot. |
You know by having the pan-scan along with the widescreen it will convert some of those joe 6-packers, because the movie has beautiful photography. So when joe 6 compares both he'll see the light and he will see the error of his ways in watching full screen movies.

*sad* awwww :(
I will wait for some form of collector's edition that will hopefully be a director's cut (if anything was cut from the film) and with optional subtitles...
oh well. *sad* Sanjay |

$29.98 SRP on a single barebones release? Has this happened before on a mainstream DVD?

Originally posted by MrN $29.98 SRP on a single barebones release? Has this happened before on a mainstream DVD? I think they're going to do separate P/S and WS versions of this. They can't be serious in their press release with the statement "A spokesman for Fox said every effort was made to use the maximum digital bit rate during the transfer to present the movie with the highest quality picture and audio" and then put both transfers one one disc (unless it's a DVD-18 of course). |
If it sounds like bulls**t (a.k.a. studio hype), then it probably is. Anyway, multiple news sources ran this story, and it was for all intents and purposes and independently funded production, so I don't see how studio hype enters the picture, but to each his own. |
Originally posted by bunkaroo See, I would think your star getting hit by lightning would be a negative for a film about Christ- as in, maybe the guy upstairs doens't like your film? :) Anyway, multiple news sources ran this story, and it was for all intents and purposes and independently funded production, so I don't see how studio hype enters the picture, but to each his own. |
