Live Aid 'to be released on DVD'
The historic Live Aid concert is to be released on DVD after chief organiser Bob Geldof discovered pirate copies were being sold on the Internet.
Geldof hopes the classic DVD will raise "a few million pounds" during the planned release next Christmas, almost 20 years after the 1985 event. Organised by the Boomtown Rats lead singer, Live Aid was held in London's Wembley Stadium and the JFK Stadium, Philadelphia - six months after Do They Know It's Christmas?, which raised £8 million, was released. The live 16-hour broadcast instantly raised £50 million - climbing to £80 million - for African famine victims. Organisers have now decided to auction the rights to release the DVD of Live Aid, which has never come out on CD, video or DVD. The successful bidder will have to get the permission of all performing artists, which included U2, Madonna and Sir Elton John. Founding Band Aid trustee John Kennedy told BBC News Online: "We don't expect any of them to be anything other than co-operative." He added that Geldof, who received an honorary knighthood in 1986 for his charity efforts, "sees it as an asset of the people of Ethiopia" that was not being fully utilised. "It's a surprise to all of us that we're still here 20 years on spending and receiving money. "But because of piracy, it's becoming available without earning any money," he said. |
I have approximately 8 hours captured on VHS - some amazing performances! Let's hope this project makes its way to DVD!
|
Hope this is true. I could watch this over and over again. U2, Led Zeppelin and Queen were my most memorable performances.
|
who's betting we get a "best of" set and not the whole thing?
|
Box set, uncut, or no sale!

I remember this as being a good selection of perfomers, but upon review, it's pretty much a mixed bag:

Ahh, memories. Howard Jones, Madonna (when she was hot), Simple Minds...
Damn I feel old. |
You feel old? Lordy! I was there (Philly show)... free tix too!
I'd buy the box set in a heartbeat. |
This might actually be longer than 16-hours as the London and US shows were running simultaneously for a few hours.
Of course, once you cut out all the incessant babble while they were changing the stage between acts, it may just end up being about 10 hours. Do we really need to see J.J. Jackson and Martha Quinn saying over and over how great Phil Collins was? |

Originally posted by digitalfreaknyc who's betting we get a "best of" set and not the whole thing? At the very least, I want the UK concert, featuring loads of awesome '80s New Wave acts. The US concert paled in comparison (too much "classic rock" for me). I also demand commentary from band members for each set, "Where Are They Now?" exposes on defunct bands, and corresponding audio CDs. :D Actually VH-1 did a nice retrospective on the 10th(?) anniversary, which I have recorded on VHS. And please, let us not forget the co-founder of Band-Aid/Live-Aid; the man who wrote "Do They Know It's Christmas" - the number one selling single of all-time for many years; the man who was in Ethiopia to receive the first shipment of food; the man who was unjustly overlooked for knighthood: Midge Ure - lead singer of Ultravox and musician extraordinaire. We salute you Midge! |

|
A lot of people back then taped the whole show off MTV.
ANd with dvd burners now all those people are making a small fortune. |
I'm all over this!!! Can't wait!!!

The song was on the USA For Africa album. The video was broadcast once ever on Live Aid.

To me this just says that Geldof is offering the concert to distributors to bid on for the rights.
Nobody's taken him up on it yet. |
Could you imagine the headache waiting for the company that gets the rights? They'd still have to negotiate with each and every performer before the could release it, or else they'd have to cut out anyone who refused to allow it.
|
I'm sure there are some DVD Talkers that wouldn't mind the headache... ;)
|
Paul McCartney's mike wasn't working during "Let It Be"- I have the ABC special where they ran that with Dick Clark saying over and over "Once again, his microphone is not open, it will be fixed!"
|
This sounds great!
Lots of flashbacks reading the list of performers. |
I've got a fair verison on DVDr of the whole thing. It would be great if they release it uncut.
|
I'm all over this. I remember spending that saturday taking it all in.

from Billboard.com The historic 1985 Live Aid concert will finally be released on DVD in the fall. Earlier this year, the Band Aid Trust agreed to auction the global rights for the concerts for the first time, after pirated copies were found for sale on the Internet. Warner Vision International won the bidding and has set a Nov. 10 release date for a four-disc DVD package. The iconic Live Aid, held at London's Wembley and Philadelphia's JFK Stadium, raised more than $70 million for famine relief in Africa. Among the acts that performed were a reunited Led Zeppelin, U2, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and Queen. The DVDs will feature a documentary, "Food, Trucks & Rock'n'Roll," plus performances from related Live Aid events around the world. "Twenty years ago they not only played 'real good for free,' they took an issue that was nowhere on the agenda of the political world and placed it at the very top," says concert organizer Bob Geldof. "By buying the Live Aid DVD, that day continues far off into some distant but hopefully better future for all those people in whose name those great artists played." |
It will be nice to finally have this on an official video release. I taped some of the 10 year anniversary special on VH1 and still enjoy watching some of the performances (Dire Straits 10 minute version of "Sultans Of Swing", Queen's set, U2's set, etc.). Like others, I remember spending the whole day watching it so it will be nice to see some of those things for the second time ;)

This is such great news. There were so many must have performances including what was basically the 'comeback' of Queen and the closest we'll get to a Led Zeppelin reunion.
Now I just hope the price will not gouge me too much. |
wow, never knew zeppelin reunited ever? say for instance they fit 3 hours of footage a disc, could they fit the entire thing on four discs?

LIVE AID GETS NOVEMBER DVD RELEASE Warner Strategic Marketing Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the 1985 Concert That Changed the World: Live Aid, Coming to DVD This Fall BURBANK, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 07/16/2004 -- Warner Strategic Marketing is pleased to announce that the biggest concert in Rock n' Roll history, Live Aid, will be released on DVD worldwide on November 1st, 2004. The unforgettable global event, staged in London and Philadelphia on Saturday, 13 July 1985, was watched on television by over 1.5 billion people around the world. These concerts led to pledged donations and royalties of over $140 million towards the devastating famine in Africa. Billed as The Greatest Show on Earth, Live Aid was described by the world's media as "The Global Jukebox," "The Day Rock and Roll Changed the World" and "The greatest live show ever." Live Aid was cited as the second most memorable event in two generations and only two weeks ago was defined, in a consumer poll, as the single greatest moment in the 50-year history of rock 'n' roll, beating not only the launch of MTV and Elvis' first record but also topping the poll ahead of the seminal festival of the '60s, Woodstock. Live Aid, the greatest artists playing the greatest music for the world's poorest people and changing the global political agenda forever. Live Aid was uniquely staged simultaneously on two continents and features an unbelievable line up of major Rock & Pop acts that took to the stage in July 1985 at London's Wembley and Philadelphia's JFK Stadiums. Even today, after almost 20 years, the line up of stars put together by Bob Geldof in a matter of months remains both remarkable and unsurpassed. It is a who's who of contemporary music; united in their unequivocal support for Live Aid to prevent mass death for starving people. The extraordinary line-up includes: U2, Sting, David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, The Who, Madonna, Queen, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne & Black Sabbath, Spandau Ballet, Dire Straits, Paul Weller, Sade, Paul Young, Adam Ant, The Boomtown Rats, The Cars, Bryan Ferry, Bryan Adams, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Beach Boys, Judas Priest, The Style Council, Simple Minds, Thompson Twins, Nile Rodgers, Hall & Oates, Status Quo, The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, Teddy Pendergrass, Alison Moyet, and Kenny Logins. Since that great day this historic concert footage has remained locked away and the announcement of its imminent DVD release is therefore indeed momentous. Unscrupulous bootleggers have tried to sell the concert on the black market but have been shut down and prosecuted on a number of occasions. This has forced the Band Aid Trust to seek permission from all the artists to be included in the four-disc Live Aid set, an eventuality that was never anticipated at the time of Live Aid. Now in time for the 20th anniversary of Live Aid and after 19 years in the vaults, Warner Strategic Marketing will release those unforgettable performances on a Live Aid, 4 DVD package out on November 2, 2004. Currently in production with the master videotapes and over 10 hours of performances the DVD will be superbly presented and re-mastered in multi-channel surround sound and stereo audio options. Within the set additional gems include the "Food, Trucks & Rock 'n' Roll" documentary (sub-titled in 8 languages) and inspirational Live Aid performances from other parts of the globe. Live Aid on DVD is the most eagerly anticipated music DVD of the decade. The Band Aid Trust is obliged to maximize its assets and in a hotly-contested open bidding invitation London-based Warner Vision International secured a licence to represent and distribute, worldwide, the Live Aid 4-disc set. Live Aid remains the asset of the Band Aid Trust. Warner Vision International's Ray Still commented. "There is only one music event that begs the question 'Where were you on that day?' and that is Live Aid. Over 1.5 billion TV viewers tuned in, on July 13, 1985, to the extraordinary event that was Live Aid. "It's an understatement to say that it's a great pleasure and an honour for Warner Vision to be involved in bringing all the extraordinary moments and performances that encapsulated Live Aid to DVD for the first time." Bob Geldof added: "Twenty years ago they not only played 'real good for free,' they took an issue that was nowhere on the agenda of the political world and placed it at the very top. "They also kept, directly or indirectly, millions of people alive and in so doing they reminded 1.5 billion people that individuals are not powerless in the face of monstrous human tragedy. "By buying the Live Aid DVD, that day continues far off into some distant but hopefully better future for all those people in whose name those great artists played." Since the concert the Band Aid Trust in the UK alone has raised over $50 million and continues to operate in famine affected countries in Africa. (Courtesey Market Wire) |

Dunno about THAT but it'll be nice to finally have :) |

Why doesn't that press release mention Bob Dylan?
I've wanted to see this ragged performance again as I didn't record it at the time.Maybe he's blocking his performance.... |
