This is really sad, sad news to me. The classic New Wave artists I really love have severely truncated sets here. Ultravox are missing two tracks, Nik Kershaw is missing three songs, Spandau missing two, etc., etc. (I assume Duran has asked that "A View To A Kill" be excluded due to the infamous voice-cracking incident).

I'll still buy it, but it's a half-assed attempt. The whole point of Geldof doing this was to thwart eBayers. Looks like you'll still have to go that route for the whole show.

No one should ever have to go to eBay to get "unreleased" stuff. Many fans trade these things freely, and can be gotten for the cost of blank dvd/cd's. I will be buying this, but have the whole thing on DVD-R too (very crappy quality).

This truly sucks the big one.

However, I wholeheartedly applaud Ms. Sinclair's efforts .

I'm watching the first disc and it's fantastic. While this is on sale at Target ($19.99) everyone should pick one up...not only is it a great value, but the proceeds go toward helping the poor and hungry in Sudan.

Yes, it's a very nice set. Nice 80's flashback with some of those bands and it goes to a great cause.

Dan Aykroyd was a Blues Brother.
The video qulity could have been better.
It's not sharp at all.

The concert wasn't being filmed for later distribution. All the tapes were supposed to be destroyed. The fact that there's a record of the concert at all is pretty amazing.

Granted Aykroyd was a "Blues Brother" but it doesn't mean he belonged in the room with the other recording artists.... IMO.

They allowed Dan Aykroyd in, but refused Madonna. They thought that in two years no one would remember who she was!

Didn't VH1 rebroadcast Live Aid on the 10th anniversary? I don't remember if they showed the whole thing, but MTV must still have its tapes.

i'm also very happy with my purchase of "live aid". to anyone "old" enough to remember this concert, watching this was like opening a time capsule to that important day in 1985 in music history. personally, i didn't find the video quality that bad at all, and the DD 5.1 and DTS mixes made this event sound better than ever. i would have paid twice as much for this set. disc 2 is my favorite with killer performances by queen, dire straits and the who. it's too bad the "artists" of today are more concerned with their own personal gain than to champion a worthy cause and try to accomplish something of this stature. kudos to those responsible for finally getting this on dvd!

u2 and queen are by far the best numbers on the dvd. But for those of us to young to remeber this show (was one month old) i must say. Ozzy osbourne looks way better now than he did back then. and i am glad phil collins decided to loste the rest of the hair.

I must say that watching Queen bring down the house with "Radio GaGa" sent chills down my spine. Seeing Freddie singing was awesome. The same for Banjamin Orr (The Cars).

A great set, and I am so pleased to be able to share this with my kids.

I hear ya. I was watching this today and I was amazed at the shots of Freddie in the foreground against the sea of people clapping and swaying in unison. He was so strong of voice, strutting around the stage for the crowd he held in his back pocket. I was simply overcome with emotion.

I remember videotaping most of the day long concert on several Betamax tapes that day. My parents weren't happy I was watching TV all day but they understood Live Aid's significance. Needless to say I don't have a Betamax machine anymore or even the tapes. But this DVD and DTS surround sound makes this experience helluv better than watching it on a 13" color TV with dinky speakers back then.

The video quality is I think about as good as its going to get. I remember watching the broadcast and remember those horizontal lines as well. I remember it bothering me at the time.


I'm loving every minute of this DVD though. U2, Queen, and The Who as everyone will see brought down the house and everything else paled in comparison. Not even Led Zeppelin got the crowd going like those three bands did that day. The Philly crowd was on avg. fairly sedate compared to Wembly. I was a huge U2 fan back then and watching that performance again is like going back in time.

Interesting to see bands that I wasn't into but love now like Style Council, Nik Kershaw and Bryan Ferry perform. Awesome performance of "Slave to Love"

Sade just oozes class. Lots of pasty skinned sweaty mullet haired rockers and then this incredible WOMAN and VOICE emerges. I remember holding my breath during her performance back then as well.

Elvis Costello performs a great version of "All You Need Is Love" Don't remember seeing that!!! Must have been to the bathroom or something at the time.




Live Aid was a true moment of Grace for popular music.

Also, the Hooters is not included in the dvd.

The thing I find interesting about this is that if it weren't for piracy, the people of Ethiopia would be that little bit poorer. It's a funny old world...

Sir Bob has all but said that the only reason he did the work for the DVD release was because people were making money from the pirate copies. It seems that piracy is the ONLY reason we can buy this legitimately.

I remember when I saw Led Zepplin and I noticed Jimmy Page's playing wasn't good, but just seeing them on t.v. was such a joy I overlooked the bad performance by Page.
Robert Plant looked like he was having a good time.
Led Zepplin should have allowed their performance for this dvd set.

iv got the Freddie Mercury tribut where Plant sounds pretty bad doing crazy little thing called love.

LEd might have had a bad show, but who cares. They played for free at a charity event. This only makes them look bad, way more so than a bad show.

I was really looking forward to seeing the Phil Collins/Sting collaborations. too bad they cut most of them as all I have are 47th gen audio recordings of them (especially Long Long Way to Go).

Zep has always been overly sensitive about their performances, IMHO. Were they great? No. Was it great to see them? Yes.

I've still never seen the entire performance, since I taped this off ABC back in the day, and they interrupted the historic reunion to cut to a *repeat* of Madonna from earlier in the day. Grrrrrr...

They should have allowed it to be included. It's not like anyone is going to use those few quick charity songs as a benchmark about the band's quality. People aren't going to boycott future releases or burn their Zep IV CDs because Page was a bit off his game in 1985.

Man i finally got my set today and i really don't really care who's perfomances are on it or not(except for Zeppelin). I'm amazed as to the sound and picture quality it's almost scary - simply amazing!!!
