The historic 1985 Live Aid concert will finally be released on DVD in the fall. Earlier this year, the Band Aid Trust agreed to auction the global rights for the concerts for the first time, after pirated copies were found for sale on the Internet.

Warner Vision International won the bidding and has set a Nov. 10 release date for a four-disc DVD package. The iconic Live Aid, held at London's Wembley and Philadelphia's JFK Stadium, raised more than $70 million for famine relief in Africa.

Among the acts that performed were a reunited Led Zeppelin, U2, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and Queen. The DVDs will feature a documentary, "Food, Trucks & Rock'n'Roll," plus performances from related Live Aid events around the world.

"Twenty years ago they not only played 'real good for free,' they took an issue that was nowhere on the agenda of the political world and placed it at the very top," says concert organizer Bob Geldof. "By buying the Live Aid DVD, that day continues far off into some distant but hopefully better future for all those people in whose name those great artists played."

It will be nice to finally have this on an official video release. I taped some of the 10 year anniversary special on VH1 and still enjoy watching some of the performances (Dire Straits 10 minute version of "Sultans Of Swing", Queen's set, U2's set, etc.). Like others, I remember spending the whole day watching it so it will be nice to see some of those things for the second time ;)

Too bad November 10th is a Wednesday.

This is such great news. There were so many must have performances including what was basically the 'comeback' of Queen and the closest we'll get to a Led Zeppelin reunion.

Now I just hope the price will not gouge me too much.

wow, never knew zeppelin reunited ever? say for instance they fit 3 hours of footage a disc, could they fit the entire thing on four discs?

LIVE AID GETS NOVEMBER DVD RELEASE
Warner Strategic Marketing Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the 1985 Concert That Changed the World: Live Aid, Coming to DVD This Fall

BURBANK, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 07/16/2004 -- Warner Strategic Marketing is pleased to announce that the biggest concert in Rock n' Roll history, Live Aid, will be released on DVD worldwide on November 1st, 2004. The unforgettable global event, staged in London and Philadelphia on Saturday, 13 July 1985, was watched on television by over 1.5 billion people around the world. These concerts led to pledged donations and royalties of over $140 million towards the devastating famine in Africa.

Billed as The Greatest Show on Earth, Live Aid was described by the world's media as "The Global Jukebox," "The Day Rock and Roll Changed the World" and "The greatest live show ever."

Live Aid was cited as the second most memorable event in two generations and only two weeks ago was defined, in a consumer poll, as the single greatest moment in the 50-year history of rock 'n' roll, beating not only the launch of MTV and Elvis' first record but also topping the poll ahead of the seminal festival of the '60s, Woodstock.

Live Aid, the greatest artists playing the greatest music for the world's poorest people and changing the global political agenda forever.

Live Aid was uniquely staged simultaneously on two continents and features an unbelievable line up of major Rock & Pop acts that took to the stage in July 1985 at London's Wembley and Philadelphia's JFK Stadiums.

Even today, after almost 20 years, the line up of stars put together by Bob Geldof in a matter of months remains both remarkable and unsurpassed. It is a who's who of contemporary music; united in their unequivocal support for Live Aid to prevent mass death for starving people.

The extraordinary line-up includes: U2, Sting, David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, The Who, Madonna, Queen, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne & Black Sabbath, Spandau Ballet, Dire Straits, Paul Weller, Sade, Paul Young, Adam Ant, The Boomtown Rats, The Cars, Bryan Ferry, Bryan Adams, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Beach Boys, Judas Priest, The Style Council, Simple Minds, Thompson Twins, Nile Rodgers, Hall & Oates, Status Quo, The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, Teddy Pendergrass, Alison Moyet, and Kenny Logins.

Since that great day this historic concert footage has remained locked away and the announcement of its imminent DVD release is therefore indeed momentous. Unscrupulous bootleggers have tried to sell the concert on the black market but have been shut down and prosecuted on a number of occasions.

This has forced the Band Aid Trust to seek permission from all the artists to be included in the four-disc Live Aid set, an eventuality that was never anticipated at the time of Live Aid.

Now in time for the 20th anniversary of Live Aid and after 19 years in the vaults, Warner Strategic Marketing will release those unforgettable performances on a Live Aid, 4 DVD package out on November 2, 2004.

Currently in production with the master videotapes and over 10 hours of performances the DVD will be superbly presented and re-mastered in multi-channel surround sound and stereo audio options. Within the set additional gems include the "Food, Trucks & Rock 'n' Roll" documentary (sub-titled in 8 languages) and inspirational Live Aid performances from other parts of the globe.

Live Aid on DVD is the most eagerly anticipated music DVD of the decade.

The Band Aid Trust is obliged to maximize its assets and in a hotly-contested open bidding invitation London-based Warner Vision International secured a licence to represent and distribute, worldwide, the Live Aid 4-disc set. Live Aid remains the asset of the Band Aid Trust.

Warner Vision International's Ray Still commented. "There is only one music event that begs the question 'Where were you on that day?' and that is Live Aid. Over 1.5 billion TV viewers tuned in, on July 13, 1985, to the extraordinary event that was Live Aid.

"It's an understatement to say that it's a great pleasure and an honour for Warner Vision to be involved in bringing all the extraordinary moments and performances that encapsulated Live Aid to DVD for the first time."

Bob Geldof added: "Twenty years ago they not only played 'real good for free,' they took an issue that was nowhere on the agenda of the political world and placed it at the very top.

"They also kept, directly or indirectly, millions of people alive and in so doing they reminded 1.5 billion people that individuals are not powerless in the face of monstrous human tragedy.

"By buying the Live Aid DVD, that day continues far off into some distant but hopefully better future for all those people in whose name those great artists played."

Since the concert the Band Aid Trust in the UK alone has raised over $50 million and continues to operate in famine affected countries in Africa.

(Courtesey Market Wire)
Well, one says Nov. 1, the other Nov. 2. Guess it'll be the 2nd, since that's a Tuesday. I was a little put off by the "10 hour" line, since the show actually went on for about 16 hours. But then I realized that if you remove the various videos and the between set pauses, 10 hours may actually be a complete set. We'll see.

I woke up at the crack of dawn for this when it was on MTV. Awesome.

From what I remember the zeppelin reunion sounded pretty lousy, like they hadn't done any rehearsal whatsoever.

Geoffrey 07-19-04 06:43 PM

Why doesn't that press release mention Bob Dylan?
I've wanted to see this ragged performance again as I didn't record it at the time.Maybe he's blocking his performance....

I believe they asked Phil Collins to fill in as drummer for them which, IIRC, is why he was on Both Sides of the Atlantic for Live Aid.

Incidentally, no release so far has said that this concert will be uncut.

I am sooo going to buy this! Great set list, and it'll be good to see Ultravox again!

-confused- What music DVD could possibly be more anticipated?

Geoffrey 07-20-04 08:11 PM

I thought Tony Thompson (Power Station) did the drumming for the Zep reunion....

The two biggest reunions, the Who and Led Zeppelin, went off very well, except that because of a transmission failure, most of the Who's set was not seen in the United States. Considering all of the bickering between band members before the concert, they performed as if they were in their prime. Pete Townshend started writing a new song, "After The Fire," to debut at Live Aid but it was not ready in time. Roger Daltrey did record it later in the year. The Led Zeppelin set could have been the most anticipated set of the entire day. It had been exactly five years and one week since their last live performance. With Phil Collins on drums they performed three classics, including "Stairway To Heaven," during which it seemed like the entire Philadelphia audience sang with Robert Plant.

The most legendary rock spectacle of all time, Live Aid defined a decade, raised millions for famine relief and turned Bob Geldolf into saint. Now, on November 1st, almost twenty years after the historic live event in 1985, Warner Home Video has announced that they will release the entire concert on November 2nd.

The unforgettable global event, staged in London and Philadelphia on Saturday, 13 July 1985, was watched on television by over 1.5 billion people around the world. Featuring performances by U2, Sting, David Bowie, Madonna, Queen, Duran Duran, Neil Young, Sade, The Cars, Bryan Ferry, Simple Minds, The Pretenders, Elvis Costello and more, Warner has scoured the vaults and will remaster the event in its original 4:3 full screen and Dolby Digital 5.1 from the best-quality materials available. Also to be included on this four-disc set are additional performances from other parts of the globe, as well as the documentary "Food, Trucks & Rock 'n' Roll."

Retail price has not yet been announced, but stay tuned for further details.

Actually the entire concert ran from approx 12 am PST Friday night / Saturday morn until around 8 pm Saturday night. So that would make it about 20 hours, then minus all of the fillers. 10 hours does not sound right. A dual layer DVD can fit around 4 hours (???), so it could possible be around 15 hours long on 4 DVDz. This is all speculation on my part, though.

This still is the greatest moment I have spent watching a concert in my life. I watched it when it started at midnight, but then had to go to bed and then woke up around 6 am and then watched it till the end. I videotaped all of it, but my video heads got dirty during the Led Zeppelin reunion, so only the audio recorded and all I could see was a whole bunch of snow. Thank God for recordable DVDz!

Well, i'm not holding my breath for this collection to include Prince's "4 the Tears In Your Eyes" video.

It was the only time it was ever shown...

You're both right!! Collins and Thompson played together during the 'Zep' set.

Fyi,

Prince was asked to perform but he was afraid of getting shot in an open stadium like JFK (how ironic) so he made the video instead

I also remember sitting on my couch watching this all day.

Can't rememebr all of the performances except for a few especially Duran Duran doing a great version of "A View To A Kill" and Bryan Adams calling Bob Geldof a saint

Some bad news from DavisDVD:

NO ZEPPELINS OVER LIVE AID

Evidently, the song won't remain the same. Legendary super group Led Zeppelin have refused to allow their performance at 1985's Live Aid to be included on the upcoming DVD release of the charity event. According to a band spokesperson, the Zep have been - and still are - unhappy with what they believe to be a sub-standard performance. Their appearance at the iconic fundraiser marked the only time that members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (with an assist by Phil Collins on drums) played under the Led Zeppelin banner after the 1980 death of their powerhouse drummer John Bonham. The news has reportedly upset Live Aid organizer Sir Bob Geldof, who hopes to raise a further $575 million for African famine relief through sales of the DVD. A source on the Live Aid project says, "It is a political thing. They don't want the legend of Led Zeppelin diminished by one below-par performance." Look for Live Aid to be released, sans Led Zeppelin, on November 1st.
That's pretty greedy on Page/Plant's part considering that proceeds are going to a worthy charity. I'd guess that many people will skip the set just because of their exclusion. I may just give this one a rent, myself.

mrpayroll 08-02-04 08:53 AM

Damn it, that was the one part of the show, where my video heads crapped out because of dirt and didn't record the video, only the audio.

Hopefully they will be scorned and ridiculed because of their decision. They probably believe that their best work was because they were high on drugs and drunk off their asses!

No. They thought that Phil was awful and didn't know their songs at all. I've heard them talk about it on occasions. It's a shame and I was kinda looking forward to that to see how bad he actually was, but I'm not suprised they didn't want it included under the circumstances.

Well you can't blame Phil for that, he probably had very little time to practice with them, plus wasn't the Led Zeppelin concert in Philadelphia, so he had to travel on the Concorde from England after he played there? Or am I getting it backwards?

Anyways, Phil Collins is one of the best rock & roll drummers in the last 40 years, top 10! Remember early Genesis, the 70's? There were few drummers that were as good as him.

Actually it was Led Zep's performance that was awful. They could have had Neil Peart from Rush and it wouldn't have covered up that untuned sloppy guitar and Plant's cracking voice. Phil Collins was still in practice, so he made them look even worse probably.
