X-Files box sets, "Asian Collector's Edition"

I'm finally getting around to completing my X-Files collection starting back with season 5. I'm quite dismayed to see that Fox is still holding to their outrageous $150 price point. Doing some eBay searching, I see quite a few box sets labelled "Asian Collector's Edition". These sets are supposedly "just like the American sets, with some Asian characters on the front." Knowing how people like to -- expound -- in their auctions, I am skeptical. Most of these auctions claim these discs work in both North American and European players, which makes me further question their legitimacy, as they wouldn't be properly region-encoded that way.

Can someone please shed some light as to what exactly these people are selling, and if they are "exactly like the US versions" as the sellers all like to claim?

what amkes me angry is that Ebay allows for these idiots to sell bootlegs, which are illegal.

I am searching for season 8 at a decent price, and was amazed at the increase of asian collector sets out there.

Ebay should give these sellers the boot.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I'm amazed that eBay turns a blind eye to this stuff. I'm even more amazed that it doesn't draw the ire of the studios.

Think of it as trying to weed out sand from an ocean. there is just so many new auctions like this that it would take countless man hours that ebay doesn't have. No way they can control this.

Half.com is the way to go. You can ususally find the US versions for less than $60.00.

I disagree. Half.com is plagued with just as many bootleg copies as is eBay. Your best bet is the honest sellers of the exchange forum.

You should wait for S9 to come out and get a "combo" deal from BB or CC.

ebay still makes money from these auctions when the item sells. Of course they won't try to stop them.

Does anyone know why the MSRP on these sets is so high? The Buffy sets are set at $60, and you can usually get those for around $40. $150 is just absurd.

The short answer: People keep buying them, so Fox has no incentive to lower prices.

The longer answer: The X-Files cast and producers get a higher percentage of the take from syndication and home video sales than most TV shows, so Fox has jacked up the price to keep their profits level.

I only buy boxed sets at used DVDs stores, and haven't paid more than $50-$55 for any of the first six seasons. Your best bet is to check locally.

yeah, the fox studio store sells these for $50. The best beat is just to look around used record stores or half.com and stay away from the obvious bootlegs.

A R1 package change should be in the works. Though I'm not sure how much, if by any will there be a price drop. X-files still sells very well at it's 89.95 MSRP price point.

as for these bootlegs. Not worth it buddy.

Don't know; don't care. If something is commercially available, who cares about the quality of an illegal copy? To save money at the expense of the people who actually created the content that you want to buy?
