Devil's Backbone (SE) : DB Fans, check this out!

Santi with Bomb Statue
The Devil's Backbone DVD with Every Order

As a special tribute to long-time friend and director, Guillermo del Toro, Sideshow will be releasing a low-run limited edition statue based on the critically acclaimed del Toro film, "The Devil's Backbone." This intricately sculpted statue of Santi, a key character in the film, is standing beside a rusty bombshell. With each statue order, you will receive a DVD of the 'The Devil's Backbone.'

"We were inspired by Guillermo del Toro to create a remarkable collectible piece based on the most drammatic character in his film," says Greg Anzalone, president of Sideshow Collectibles. "We were motivated by our love for this unique story when we begin to think about which composition we wanted to create."

Sideshow artists teamed with sculptor Greg Tozer of Weta Workshop and designer David Marti of DDT Efectos Especiales (the design and effects house for the film) to create an exquisite representation of one of the most central scenes from the film. Tozer has captured the hauntingly sorrowful expression of ghost character "Santi, the one who sighs," a boy who mysteriously disappeared from the orphanage the film is centered around. Positioned behind him is the massive and rusting unexploded bomb, which was deposited into the courtyard of the orphanage during the Spanish Civil War. The juxtaposition of the innocent boy ghost in the shadow of the unstable bomb makes for a beautifully disturbing piece of artwork.

The overall size of each numbered piece is an impressive 11" W x 8 " D x 17" H. The boy and bomb are poised on a high-gloss polystone base with the director's signature screened on to the base bottom. The Santi with Bomb Statue will be released in Summer 2004 in a limited edition size of 300 pieces. A special edition of 100 pieces will be exclusively available for pre-sale on Sideshow's website and include the "live" signature of Guillermo del Toro.

"The collaborators from the three companies have done the impossible by recreating Santi's perpetually bleeding skull and capturing his porcelain doll-like essence," says del Toro. "As a filmmaker, I really appreciate Sideshow's commitment to authenticity and attention to detail."

The mystery of the story centers on the two elements featured in the statue, making this a particularly significant piece for fans of the film and the director. This item's release will closely follow the Spring 2004 release of the del Toro film, "Hellboy," which will present collectors with a unique opportunity to own products from both signature del Toro properties.

Sony Home Entertainment will be releasing a new DVD of 'The Devil's Backbone' in Summer 2004, which will be added to each statue order. The new DVD will include many new extras along with the film, which will be available in Spanish with English subtitles.

More than that.

Sideshows figures generally go for $40. This is going to be a lot more than that I would think.

If it is reasonably priced I am jumping on this right away.

I need

Let the rush to preorder begin only 100 available:

I am definitely not going for this item. Too much out of my range. I told my self if it was over 200 I wouldnt get it, and if it was over 250 I definitely wouldn't get it

$295 is just too much for my blood, as beautiful and as limited as it is.

$295, ouch.

I'm not that interested in getting it, even limited to 100 pieces.

It's a fantastic film!!!

Pure speculation here but at 100 pcs. this may do very well on the secondary market given the recent success of Hellboy. This also will appeal to many type of collector's that may not be aware that this statue exists:

-The DVD Collector / Film Buff (DVD collector's get very excited about true packaged limited editions)
-Comic Book fans of del toro's work (Blade 2, Hellboy)
-The die hard Weta Collector (same weta workshop artists that worked on the LOTR films also sculpted the LOTR statues & busts which are doing incredible on ebay)

I may have to order two.

I'm interested only in the DVD. I'd make two circuits across the globe for 295 bucks!

The figures that go for $40 are basically toys/dolls.

This is a polystone piece that is more akin to the Sideshow weta lord of the rings collectibles which run from $125 to $300.

Anyway, I've got one on order

I know that, I was replying to someone else who said it would be like 40 bucks. I figured it to be around 200, but 295 is too much IMO.

So what's on the new Backbone dvd that's not on the old one? Does it at least have the old one's (great) commentary?

I managed to snag one of these still sealed on eBay for $200. Turns out the DVD included is autographed. Nice little bonus.
