Schindler's List Single Disc?
I was just looking over the press sheet for Schindler's List and it says it's a single disc.
I'm a little worried about the quality, now considering the DTS track, the fact that the film is 3 hours and 16 minutes long and that the extras bring all of the video material up to 4 hours and 45 minutes. That's a lot of stuff for a single disc. So what's the bitrate going to be on this bad boy? Just disappointing. There was talk for awhile about it being two discs, then a DVD-18 (two sided), but now it's just a DVD-9. I haven't seen any reviews yet, but we'll have to see. |
This thread says it's a DVD-18, so it's not that bad.
Did you source explicitly mention it's a DVD-9? |
It doesn't say one way or the other, but it shows the disc and it has disc art.
So that pretty much means that it won't be dual-sided. |
I can't imagine them putting ALL of that material on one side of a disc - but this is Universal we're talking about.
|
Maybe theres hope that it'll be a two disc set...hate DVD-18's
|
For what it's worth, Columbia House has it listed as a 2-disc set. They're not exactly a bastion of reliability, but it's something to hope for. I don't care if there are any extras, just pleeease don't make it a DVD-18.
|
for that release, I was hoping for a two disks set???
|
btw dvdfile reports the disc will include a new 77-minute documentary "Voices From the List" - so the documentary looks like it will be pretty comprehensive.
|
There have been rumors that it would be a DVD-18, but since it's announcement, I've also heard it'll be a two-disc set. So there's a bit of confusion. :)

Edit: Nevermind, I was wrong. http://www.dvdfile.com/software/dvd-...003/12_19.html Kicking off today's news is the announcement long expected, the last of Steven Spielberg's major works not yet released on DVD, the Oscar-winning epic Schindler's List. The news is good for fans of the film but maybe not so good for those expecting a lavish, feature-packed set brimming with extras. Three versions will be released on March 9th - 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and 4:3 open matte versions, plus a collector's gift set that includes the widescreen edition of the film. Both the widescreen and full screen versions are two-disc sets that include the 196-minute theatrical cut of the film, with Dolby Digital and DTS tracks, plus the featurettes "Voices From the List" and "Behind the Shoah Foundation With Steven Spielberg," production notes and trailers. As of now, no other extras have been announced. The gift set also includes the book Schindler’s List: Images of the Steven Spielberg Film the CD Soundtrack, a Senitype and Certificate of Authenticity. Retail is only $19.95 for the two-disc versions, and $79.95 for the box. http://www.dvdfile.com/software/dvd-...004/01_07.html A companion piece to the March 3rd DVD release of Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, Universal Studios Home Video will also release the Spielberg and Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation series Broken Silence, five historical films about human courage, heroism and triumph among the deepest of adversity during World War II. The films are: Some Who Lived, Hell On Earth, Eyes Of The Holocaust, I Remember and Children From the Abyss, all produced by Academy Award winner James Moll (director of The Last Days) and directed by distinguished filmmakers from Argentina, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Russia. each is presented in an aspect ratio of 4:3 with their native soundtracks in Dolby 2.0 stereo. There are no additional extras aside from historical notes included. Retail is set at $26.95. |
Confusion on specs from a release by Universal? I am shocked.
|
Retail is $26.98 for the 2-disc set(s), not $19.95.

I think this retailer press sheet has gotten confused, then.
Obviously this has to be on more than a single DVD-9 platter. Perhaps they were leaning towards a DVD-18 and then decided on two DVD-9s. Today I received an order sheet and there are actually five different versions: 1) Two-Disc Widescreen 2) Two-Disc Full Frame 3) Single-Disc Widescreen 4) Single-Disc Full Frame 5) Collector's Boxed Set (Two Discs, one of which is the soundtrack). Can Universal *not* screw a major release from a major director up? They messed up Jaws by cutting the doc, then E.T. was horribly packaged, then they messed up the framing with the Back to the Future WS box... it just never ends. I hope their new ownership shakes things up a little over in the HV division. |
Two-Disc Widescreen for me!

Yeah...2-Disc WS for me too...Unless the Gift set is like $50...WTF is wrong with Universal...5 different versions...god they suck balls!
|
|
Why are they releasing this in FF? Don't tell me this J6P crap. This is a disgrace.
|
The Universal web site only lists the single disc, but retailers should have either version up for pre-order soon. They have different UPCs, so there shouldn't be a mix-up.
|
For those buying the 2-disc version: They will have full-color artwork of Mickey Mouse on the discs! ;)
|
I thought this was going to be stocked with extras? Supposedly that was what was taking so long. This is what the wait was for...two documentaries?
|
god how I hate Universal...
|

so, have they confirmed if this is 2 discs yet?
|
I haven't seen any reviews yet - pre-books for retailers were due in two weeks ago, and they listed both single and double disc sets (in addition to the Collector's box).
|
As typical with many big Universal releases, there will be confusion until the release day. I really do hate this studio.
|
The bad news is according to the Home Theater Forum's review, the disc is a flipper (no 2-disc set). The good news is that the video/audio is top-notch.
|
My pre-order is for the 2-disc set. In distributor catalogs it's listed five times - WS 1 and 2 discs, FS 1 and 2 discs, and the boxed set. The order numbers are usually the UPC, but for the disc differences the numbers are the same but there's an extra digit - a 1 or 2 - on the end.
Now, whether or not there is actually a difference and isn't just an error based on the two conflicting press releases (or Universal is just hedging their bets) remains to be seen. I'm really *hoping* for a 2-disc - I hate those flippers. |
There is a review up on HTF. It's a single disc, DVD-18, with the part of the movie on side 2 and the documentary on Side 2 as well. Bad news about the flipper, but the review does state that the print of the film is pristine. So that's certainly good news.

Originally posted by Easy A FLIPPER ?!!??? You can't be serious. Is this a joke? |
Originally posted by DVD Josh Well practically all of the Fox Studio Classics are flippers also and they did a fantastic job with them. I don't care for flippers either, but if it means a lower price, then I'm all for it. |
Why this couldn't have been a 2-disc set is beyond me. I hate flippers. Not the fact that the movie is split (but of course it would be better if it's all on one disc), but because there's no disc art. Having data on both sides of the disc is very dangerous, if you're not careful.

There is no good reason for Schindler's List to have a DTS track and four audio tracks. Being in black and white, this probably could have fit on one side. Then, the extras could have been on the back or a second disc.
But, at least the audio and video is quite good (according to the HTF review anyway). It doesn't sound like any misframing or defective issues --- or other typical Universal Fu*k-ups. |
Originally posted by Easy I'm OK with it IF all the movie is on one side and extras on the other. All the studio classic discs I have don't split the movie. This one does. If it splits at an intermission it might be OK. It has been a long time. I really don't recall if there is an intermission. Hopefully, some review will address this split more fully. In my opinion, if you are going to have flip, you should maximize picture and audio quality rather than making the flip at "intermission" (which is what they did with SL). |
Argh! I hate flippers! Totally defeats the purpose of having a multi-disc player!
So is there a 2-disc coming out? what about the gift set? I really DONT want that damn flipper! |

I must've missed all the talk about this - i thought it was a 2-disc set. Shame if it's a flipper - I won't be buying it.
The only good flippers are the ones with a FS version on the other side. That way, I don't have to worry so much about keeping both sides completely free of scuffs. I can just put the FS side down, since I'd never watch it anyway. I treat the FS side like it was a label ;) |
