Wow, that's surprising. Yes, as I've mentioned several times in this thread, Persona wasn't misframed - just *differently* framed, ever so slightly.
Glad to hear they're fixing the problem with the other two. From the reviews of the extras it sounds like this will now be a set worth waiting for. And we have the Criterion 3-disc set next month to tide us over until then. |
well, If MGM corrects the issues with the framing I WILL BE BUYING the new set in May (or whenever it comes out). Period!!
Congrats to MGM for listening to the serious film lovers!! |
Yeah, I was on the fence about getting the set, and the transfer issues made me decide to pass on it, but since they're fixing it, I think I'll be getting it now.
|
I saw the box set and the individual releases for sale last night at FYE; maybe I should put them up on Ebay as the rare, exclusive widescreen editions. ;)
|
Great news. It was already on the racks at my local borders.
|
The Bergman Box could be this week's Ed Wood. My copy already shipped, so I will probably just ebay it and wait for the correct release.
|
Great news. It will all be worth the wait. I'm glad that MGM is doing right by the films.
  to you MGM |
Originally posted by Yancy Folks, we're not getting a better version of this. MGM ain't gonna care about techno-nerd wailings. And frankly, four slightly matted Bergman pictures accompanied by an ungodly load of supplemental material (and shoudn't we be thanking MGM for actually putting this stuff on there when they certainly wouldn't have been expected to?) is a lot less of an outrage than a fullscreen DVD of "I Could Go On Singing"... My box set remains on order from Amazon, and if you DVD fascists cause some kind of recall I'm gonna be pretty sad... Clearly a victory for techno-nerds and DVD fascists everywhere ... ;) FilmFanSea: Proud to be a Techno-Nerd!!!! |

The Bergman set wasn't recalled - they just won't be sending more shipments to retailers. You can find it in most etailer stores and probably in Best Buy (although they tend not to order many copies of sets like these).

It'll ship on the 10th. How is this not available? |

I'm still here!
And my copy of is "shipping soon" from Amazon! I'm happy, you're happy! I actually SCRAMBLED to get my order in this weekend just so I could make sure I get the "defective" version... It's mine! Mine! Mine! |
Re: MGM Recalls Bergman Box & Postpones Release!!!!
Originally posted by FilmFanSea From the Criterion Collection Forum: In an email to those who were sent review copies, MGM says: So, you see, corporate America DOES listen to the little guys sometimes! Congrats & thanks to everyone who worked to publicize these issues (particularly Gary Tooze of DVD Beaver). EDIT: It appears that Randy Salas, the DVD reviewer for the Minneapolis Star Tribune first relayed the above news at the Home Theater Forum -- a big thanks to Randy as well. The "transfer problems on two of the discs" appears to refer to the modified aspect ratios of Shame and Hour of the Wolf (both were filmed in 1.37:1, but incorrectly transferred--and significantly cropped--at 1.66:1), and not to the framing of Persona (which was correctly transferred at 1.33:1, though some have criticized the cropping). |
Amazon gets their stuff quite early (thanks for that "Ed Wood" disc, fellas!)
If I really find that the transfers are that bad (to my forgiving eyes), I'll replace the two questionable discs when - and if - MGM actually re-releases them. Don't hate me folks! I don't like DVD screw-ups either, but my heart was set on just SEEING these films... |
It's likely that those who buy the set now will be able to get replacement discs from MGM when they're available. So if you want to see the other discs in the set, there's no reason not to buy it now.
And what's the source of the supposed recall? No notices have been sent to retailers, nor is there anything on the MGM site or press release about the current sets being recalled. |

And what's the source of the supposed recall? No notices have been sent to retailers, nor is there anything on the MGM site or press release about the current sets being recalled. The announcement was made at the end of the business day on Friday on the West Coast. That's why there hasn't really been much movement from retailers or much ado anywhere besides these user-contributed lists. MGM was supposed to reply by Thursday but waited until the end of its business day Friday. A cynical person might consider that an intentional delay. |
Originally posted by rasalas The source is MGM. The email reposted by FilmFanSea was sent by MGM's PR firm, Bender Helper Impact, to everyone on MGM's media list. Here's the post again: INGMAR BERGMAN COLLECTION MGM Home Entertainment will not be releasing the Ingmar Bergman DVD Collection on Tuesday, February 10 due to transfer problems on two of the discs. If possible, please hold your reviews until we announce the new street date which we expect to be sometime in May. We will contact you once we have further information. |
Here's the magic "recall" word you were looking for, jough, in an updated email just sent by MGM:
Statement from MGM Home Entertainment regarding the recall of the INGMAR BERGMAN COLLECTION... It has come to our attention that the transfers utilized for the release of Ingmar Bergman's "Hour of the Wolf" Special Edition DVD and "Shame" Special Edition DVD are not representative of the intended theatrical presentation. In order to provide customers with the best quality product available, we are recalling the product at retail and will be releasing both films in a 1:37:1 aspect ratio on April 20, 2004. The Ingmar Bergman DVD Collection will also be available on that date. MGM Home Entertainment always strives to provide the highest standard of product and customer care. For additional information or comments, please contact our customer service at 877/646-4968. |
Thoroughly unexpected and welcome news.... Bergman Collection is back on the buy list!
|
Same here.
|
Still no word to East Coast retailers. It seems like they're keeping this "recall" a secret until the boxes are out on the floor and selling.
