Hoop Dreams coming to DVD soon?
One of all-time favorite documentaries ever. I would love to have this added to my collection. I think it was very done. Think of all the possibilites:
1) Director's Commentary
2) New interviews with Arthur Agee(who was on the cover of the L.A time sports section a few months ago) and William Gates(who is now a Pastor) Curtis Gates, and of course......Gene Pingatore(coach at St. Joseph's)
3) making of featurett
I badly want this one to come out, who is the company that produces this, and will it ever make its way to DVD anytime soon?

I've heard nothing, hope to hear something, but don't plan on hearing anything.
The studios are too busy trying to market garbage to even think of releasing one of the most moving pieces of documentary cinema ever produced.

I'm sure the multiple entities involved is the main reason this hasn't hit DVD yet. I have no clue who now ultimately owns the rights to this. Probably either New Line or Turner.

Curiously, Stevie, Steve James 2002 follow-up to Hoop Dreams was released on DVD just last week by Lions Gate. I realize that the rights to Hoop Dreams are held by another company (New Line?), but I would've expected whoever-it-is to take advantage of the "tie-in" possibilities.
A shame this isn't on DVD.

I agree that it's a shame this gem of a documentary isn't on DVD as yet. I don't have any inside info, just your average DVD consumer, but I for one would immediately buy this...

New Line's too busy releasing their whopping 1 DVD per month to do anything with their back catalog titles.
A shame that Hoop Dreams and Altman's Short Cuts are rotting away somewhere.

Just read this about Arthur Agee Jr.'s father being shot and killed Wednesday, and found some interesting information regarding the DVD:

Looks like April fellas.

The family was recently interviewed for a DVD version of the documentary, expected to be released in April, Agee said.

Oh please God Please let this be true. I would love Criterion to release this puppy. That would mean only 2 more "Holy Grail" titles I have left on my list of..."I gotta have this movie". One being, "The African Queen", which we all know will get some type of special edition treatment, the question is when. The other being Walt Disney's timeless classic "Song of the South."
