Wenders' UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD - Spring 2004

from Anchor Bay's website

UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD - Spring 2004

One of the most incredible science fiction epics of all time comes to DVD in 2004 in a newly restored version from director Wim Wenders (WINGS OF DESIRE, THE BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB). Presented here in a multi-disc set, this director's cut runs well over 4 hours and will contain new supplementary features provided by the director. Closed Captioned For The Hearing Impaired.
I can't wait, this is one of my favorite movies not yet on dvd.

DocBrass 09-02-03 11:43 PM

philo 09-03-03 01:48 AM

That's excellent news. :) I've read about the director's cut and wondered when or if we'd ever get to see it. Definitely one to look forward to.

Can't wait to get this finally! I figured there was a good chance it would never make it out.

mdm67 09-08-03 02:49 PM

280 minutes? it was boring at 158!!
Director's cut is a crime, it should be banned!!

I think it's you who should be [BANNED]

Thread crapping should be banned.

I don't see why people bother reading a thread, only to make a posting saying that its a waste of space. Why even bother reading the thread in the first place?

I think it will be a much better film at 280 minutes than it was at 158 - and at 158 minutes it was still a pretty good film.

Caught part (all?) of this on HBO many years ago.

At the time, I found it plodding, smug, and dull, but there was something intangible about it that sort of fascinated me. And ten years on, I still find myself recalling images and scenes from this movie that I didn't really seem to like.

So I might have to pick it up. Maybe I'll come around on it.

An ex-girlfriend of mine when I was in college (which would be about 5 years ago now) loved this film, and made me watch with her one evening. I was bored to tears by it. Since then, however, I have gained an appreciation for other films that Wenders has done, so I'll be very willing to check this disc out.

You've just described the majority of Wim Wenders' films in a nutshell.

I can't find this info on the Anchor Bay website, but it looks like a "Director's Cut" 3 DVD set is available in Italy:

http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/froms/Y/..._e_s_dvd_.html

Maybe that's old news, but it's the first I'd heard of it. Anybody have any more info on the Spring 2004 release?

jough 03-03-04 01:21 AM

It says "multi-disc set" - does that mean more than 2?

That's awesome. It's funny - I've only seen this once, a long time ago, on a VHS rental - but certain scenes have stuck with me all of this time - I guess it's been about ten years since I've seen it.

I'll DEFINITELY be picking this up.

Spring is almost here!

slowcloud 03-03-04 05:44 AM

I do enjoy Wim Wenders' films. I remember when Until the End of the World came out in theaters (in addition to the great CD release of the soundtrack). I skipped its theatrical release because it wasn't the director's cut and have yet to watch it at all. When I heard the film was not the definitive director's cut, I had flashbacks of how over-compromised Dune was for David Lynch because it was cut back from four hours, beyond his control, as was the case with Until the End of the World. Now, I will finally see this film this spring... :)

The Exister 03-03-04 07:30 AM

Excellent news!

moviezzz 03-03-04 08:46 AM

The set was announced long before Anchor Bay was having trouble and was sold (or is being sold). There has been no announcement or news about it since. Even on Wim's own website.

It is one of my most eagerly awaited titles so I can't wait. I have the half hour longer Japanese laserdisc and some of the scenes added are truly stunning. Makes a huge difference. Especially in the San Francisco segment.

pagansoul 03-03-04 02:21 PM

This film has the 'BEST' soundtrack. I always liked this movie but I also like 'Wings of Desire'. Some people can't handle the lack of action but I find visuals and good music are what I require most.

philo 03-03-04 03:28 PM

I was also wondering about the status of this release. Considering there's been no word on this recently and Spring is just around the corner, I've got a bad feeling this won't be coming out soon. Sure hope I'm wrong because it's one of my most anticipated releases this year.

acostigan 03-03-04 04:52 PM

Excellent news. I'll definitely be picking this one up.

That's what I was wondering. I revived this thread earlier this month (after it had been lying dead for 6 months) and was hoping that somebody had more info. Unfortunately it looks like most people read the first post (from Sept 2003) and assumed it was recent info.

So yeah, since I couldn't find any info on Anchor Bay's site about it, should we just assume that this isn't gonna' happen in the near future?

Just wondering if I should try and pick up the Italian 3 disc set.

moviezzz 03-25-04 12:16 PM

I emailed Anchor Bay and heard back that there is a rights issue and it isn't going to be released this spring. They didn't say if it was still in the works, just that there is a rights issue.

And Wim Wender's official site (where he once in a while stops by the message boards) isn't available at the moment (changing servers). So, no news there.

rexinnih 03-25-04 04:43 PM

Please, please, please still be in the works. Until then I still have my LD to tide me over.

cynthia 01-11-05 05:55 AM

Any updates on this?

renaldow 01-11-05 11:13 AM

AB's not releasing it.

If you've got a region free player this has already been released in Italy as a 4 disc set. 3 films as a trilogy and a 4th bonus disc. I'd suggest it highly for any Wenders' fan. It's excellent.

glad I have it on my nicheflix queue.

Josh Z 01-11-05 11:55 PM

Unfortunately, the Italian disc does not offer any English subtitles for those portions of the movie in foreign languages (there's some extensive French and Japanese sections in it, as I recall).

darkangel5 01-12-05 06:40 AM

I think we might be waiting a while for a region 1 or 2 release.

Just though I would mention that I have the 3 disc directors cut imported from Italy and apart from the opening scene which is in French (no english subtitles) the remainder of the movie is all in English 5.1. All the extras are in english as well. It's definiately worth picking it up.

When I watched the short version on tv, the French dialogue was subtitled but the Japanese was not. Is it supposed to be?

If you're familiar with the movie it's not that big of a deal, you already know what is happening. Also, most of the time anything that happens in subtitles gets explained later in the film in English. It's still a very watchable movie. You're talking about 10 minutes of subtitles total spread over 3 movies.

There's also a website that has the english translations available for the curious, so that's always and option too.
