Nope, you're right. Saw it at Carousel Mall with my father the night it came out--it played with an intermission. It went to TNT quite some time later, even though it was shot as a mini-series.
G&G didn't have the emotional impact of Gettysburg, I think, because it tried too hard to have the same emotional impact.

Knowing warner, this will probably be a 2 disc set, with each part being 2 hours and to fit on 2 flipper discs, and then the final side having all the extras, I hope this will not be the case but thats how it probably will be.

The Important Speechifyin' in the movie was one major reason I didn't like it. The other was the music, of which there was entirely too much. And it's rare for slow, majestic music to work during a battle scene...and this is just another case where it doesn't work. And when you combine the overblown music with the overblown speeches, you get an overkill of self-importance. I also had a problem with context - I don't know much about these battles, or the context in which they were fought, and the narrative didn't help me learn anything.
Still, a nice DVD presentation, although I can easily see how it might benefit from an extended version and a multi-disc set.

I'll certainly be picking it up. While I agree some of the speeches were a bit tedious, that's why the good lord gave us the Skip button. The battlefield action was first-rate. Plus it was really nice to see so many of the Gettysburg characters again.
Hopefully the extra 2 1/2 hours will be mostly battlefield action rather than dialogue.
Also, according to Amazon.com, G&G is currently #10 on their list of best selling DVD's.

If you want the 6 hour version, be my guest. As for me, G&G was easily one of the most horrible films I have ever seen. And to think I'm a big Civil War fan.

San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival to Feature World Premiere of Six-hour Director’s Cut of the Civil War Epic, ‘Gods and Generals’
This is a theatrical showing on Nov. 11, so I assume that the DVD is not too far behind.

You meant they're cutting the film down from its present length of 12 hours?
...it was 12 hours, right?...I mean it seemed like 12, or maybe it was 13.

I think the reason why this part was cut from the TC is because the Union actually won this battle as opposed to First Manassas, Fredericksburg, and The Wilderness where the Rebels won.

I love the civil war movies and those of that era but Gods and Generals was probably only the second movie in my life I grew bored while watching and I turned it off never to rewatch it. (it will be in my next ebay box of auction stuff)
This is one extremely tedious movie! To make a six hour cut would be insane!
Its only hope is to re-edit into a (much better) directors cut lasting only a couple of hours, assuming they cut out the best parts in the original version.
Otherwise I'll give this a five thumbs DOWN!

Man, lot of hatin' goin' on in here. Even though there's a tedious amount of dialogue in this film, I thought the over-all look of the film was brilliant. I watched in amuzement whenever a returning actor (from Gettysburg) would appear on screen.

boy thanks alot. i wonder how many discs just the movie would fit on?
3 single sided at about 2 hours each, 2 single sided at 3 hours each, or (gulp) one double sided dvd at 3 hours each.

Guessing the sales of the original weren't strong enough to warrent the 6-hour release. A pity, since even though I tend to FF through the slow parts, I still enjoy it.
About given up hope though.
