The other part of that was, the music was re-recorded with sound-a-like music, so it might not be that glaring.

I can say that the Pants sketch I was discussing earlier was quite glaring in the change. But maybe that's just me. That whole episode had a lot of changes around music that I caught instantly and I haven't seen the show in years.

Don't know how I missed this thread, but FINALLY! Might have to hold on to my vhs tapes though if some of the music is really off. Just glad to see it finally coming and the extra look solid. I want to dip my balls in this set very soon.

I pre-ordered my copy from MTV a few weeks ago and it showed up the other day while I was out of town. It feels amazing to finally have it in hand - and a good week and a half before street date at that. I know what I'm doing tonight...

Got my set this morning from UPS at 10:30 am - about 6-7 hours before their normal time. I've watched the first disc and its bonus material. Currently going through the commentary and I have to say (at least the first episode) it is hilarious and very engaging.
They actually said they recorded these commentaries in March 2007! Makes me really appreciate how long this has been in the works (as if this thread wasn't enough of an indication).
Behind my daughters' births and my wedding day, this may well be the greatest day in my life.

I'm interviewing Ken Marino tomorrow, I'll be sure to get him to talk about how long these DVDs have been in the works.

How is the music replacement? I'm curious as to how well that's handled. Is it instantly obvious that they had to re-record the dialogue?

Some of it is noticeable, but it's honestly not as bad as I expected it to be. They call most of it out in the commentary so far.

most of it doesn't matter and it's pretty obvious, at times. occasionally, it doesn't "read" and the original is pretty much the only thing that would have worked...

Coolness, sounds like they did a decent job with the music on this set.
But I was sold anyways, so it really didn't matter.

I agree that they did a great job with the music editing and you wouldn't really notice it unless you were looking for it. [That said, most people watching this would be looking for it, so...]
I'm through the first two seasons and the only really noticeable thing to me so far was the digital blurring of the posters on the wall in the "And" sketch. There was obviously no other way to do it but it is quite distracting.
One sketch out of 12 episodes isn't bad, though. I still can't believe I'm actually watching this some times.

Is it just a coincidence that Francis Rizzo reviewed the dvd?
Joe Lo Truglio's character on Reno 911 is Frank Rizzo.

I know you can get this cheap online (55% off at amazon), but the retail price is so high ($80) that I wonder how much it would've cost had they gotten the actual music. Didn't seem to make shows such as Freaks&Geeks too expensive.

Re: Fans of MTV's "The State" Rejoice
However, they didn't use music to, say, set the mood for one scene (or even several scenes). Every episode was pretty much crammed full of music, from varied artists. And as I understand it, when they were on MTV they could use whatever MTV had access to play. So if they wanted a Billy Joel song to be used for 3 seconds in a skit, they could. I would say you're talking somewhere between 5 to 15 songs per episode (a number based totally on my memory of the show, so I may be way off in either direction). But when they basically had free reign, they used everything they could get their hands on (and used it quite well, I might add). Assuming they could even secure the rights to everything, it would have pushed the price up astronomically (although, what State fan wouldn't pay $240 for that set? We had the 240...we had to have the set...)
On that note, since I haven't received my copy yet, has anyone watched the Lapin Variety Show sketch? How's the music replacement for the original Billy Joel song ("Uptown Girl")?

Fyi, they are also showing reruns of this on Mtv2 and I was pleasently surprised to catch it last night. The guide on my dvr isn't downloading the correct info. so I don't know when/if they may show more, but thought I would give you guys the heads up. I forgot how good some of the skits are Blueberrry Johnson, Jew, Italian and red head gay, just classic stuff.

I was just about to buy this when a review copy came in the mail the other day. Score! I can't wait to dig into this whole thing. It's been far too long of a wait.

I have to say that while the show is still funny, the missing music isn't just noticeable, it's practically detrimental. I understand not being able to get rights for most of the songs, but for every song? Even Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On"? I actually know for a fact that's not a very difficult or expensive song to get the rights to. It seems like they didn't even try.
