Say I want to build my own to store about 400 DVD's. Any suggestions on how much the costs would be?

For 500 DVDs, mine cost about $30.

Yeah Can-Am is a bit out of my price range. Just graduated college and got a house in the past year.

Thanks for the idea Randy, but that would not work since my house is built rather odd.

Here's a link to my storage shelves. I have some identical bookcases that I got from Staples and I use a closet for the laserdiscs and DVDs of concerts and music videos.

the old thread i had this pic in seems to be dead so here it is.

each 'cabinet' is two $20 cases from Office Max that have been modified with hinges and a wood panel in front.
i was looking for some of the allmedia storage cabinets shown on page 2 of this thread, but couldn't find them locally.
i wanted something that closed and didn't expose them. i made two of these, they hold a little under 500 total. cost came to about $120 for both.

2 shelves, no toys. Holds about 540 DVDs and has room to store my blank audio CDR's for the TDK, cleaning supplies for the turntable and and my full ear headphones.

I go with Ikea's great BENNO wall shelf. They are about $30 each and come in several different colors. More importantly they hold roughly 78 DVDs depending on the size of the cases.

Here are what they look like:

Horizontal

Vertical

The vertical unitl holds my larger boxed sets, music DVDs and irregular sized audio CDs (as well as DVD Audio). I also hope to add an additional BENNO so that the rest of my collection can be proudly displayed on the wall instead of hidden in a crummy home entertainment system.

I use a half-height bookcase from Wal-Mart (cheapie $15) and it holds about 100 keepcases on three shelves. Works, but it's filled now, and new purchases are starting to get stacked up. Going to have to either get another one, or get something new.

i use an old metal `70's era dresser/drawer (note the painted on faux wood grain) that holds ~500+ DVDs. The rest are stacked on top of it and strewn about the room. If i can find plans for a wooden vers. that i can easily adapt for DVDs, i may build my own... unless i can find a similar piece of furniture somewhere for a good price.

If you do a search for "storage" or "store" in titles only, you will turn up plenty of past threads.

Here's some nice new storage racks that Best Buy will be carrying soon...

I want one of those cabinets!

Right now I have about 300+ and use two cheap WalMart racks...I want a cabinet, perferrably lockable.

I just want to resurrect this thread because I need some new ideas of what's out there. I have about 160 DVDs in a rack that's almost full right now and need something to expand in.

If I can find something nice enough, and in the dark Espresso colored wood, I can put it out in the living room even. Like this one for example:

Yup, it's expensive, but that's the way to go. My wife has requested that this DVD habit be my secret shame, so we hired a carpenter to put doors on the old TV nook that matched the entertainment center and two can-am cabinets fit perfectly inside and hold 700+ DVDs (not actually enough for me, but pretty good; I keep some box sets on a shelf in the closet). I took a few pics to demonstrate. Sorry they're washed out in sunlight, I'll try to redo them later.

Decker: Good job. Finally someone who has a collection out site. IMO, collections that are displayed in the TV area actually make it look more like a dorm room -- what a turn-off.

Thanks, I'll let my wife know
At first, I was pretty cool to the idea, but it really does look good and usually elicits an impressed gasp when revealed to guests for the first time.

$25 at Target. Holds somewhere between 225 and 250 DVDs (I can't remember what the box said).

Funny this thread got resurrected...I'm going to be ordering a set of Can-Am cabinets (or something similar from Video Shopper) in the next week.

Also, I'm writing a media storage article for www.hometheaterhifi.com, that basically says if you're a "serious collector", then cabinet storage is the only way to go...

I'm not a serious collector but for some reason I find that statement ridiculous. I still want to read it though. Link it here when you're finished.

Now, why is that? I guess I don't yet understand why someone would want them hidden and separated in drawers. I like to see all my DVDs as a whole. Plus, those Can-Am ones are way too expensive.

edit: I guess it was in one of the many other threads on this topic since I looked through this one and found no other posts by me... anyway, to can am all the way
