GREASE Special Edition in 2004!!!!!

DVDFile just posted an interview with the director:
http://192.217.197.208/news/special_...randal/grease/

(from the second page of the interview)
Q: Now, I'm a bit surprised there is no commentary or bonus features on the new DVD that weren't on the previous 20th Anniversary Edition laserdisc from a few years back. Would you have liked to record a commentary or other new extras for the new DVD?

A: There are plans to record a commentary on another version to be released in 2004.

I'll still pick up the DVD tomorrow, but I'm glad to hear they're coming out with an SE. I just wish Paramount would learn to be more upfront about these things. People would get a heck of a lot less upset with them.

In any case, Grease is the word! -biggrin-

I'm content with the current release... that is, unless Paramount suddenly decides to embrace dts. ;)

:) I know you're not an extras fan, but I was reading that short interview and it is just full of these little movie tidbits that I love to learn about. I was just so bummed about the new release coming out tomorrow because I knew it wouldn't have stuff like this, so this news is very welcomed by me! :D

2004 is a little long to wait. I guess I'll be bringing the Pink Ladies home tomorrow :)

RobCA 09-23-02 07:25 PM

Are they planning a special 26th Anniversary Edition? :p Now that I know an SE is on the way, even though it's two years down the road, I think I'm going to hold off on buying the one that's coming out tomorrow. Unless I decide I can't wait. :o

I'm surprised Kleiser let the cat out of the bag regarding the future SE before tomorrow's release. I would think someone at Paramount might get pissed.

jeffkjoe 09-23-02 07:30 PM

Since I already have the widescreen laserdisc version which is a great transfer already with the same cast/crew interviews

there's no reason to get the DVD until 2004.

I mean the only extra that the DVD has that the laserdisc does NOT have is THE TRAILER and since you can simply download THAT from the web to satisfy any curiosity,

any laserdisc owner of GREASE should hold out til the SPECIAL EDITION, cause the DVD offers NOTHING NEW to this medium.

paratize 09-23-02 07:43 PM

Except that the DVD is anamorphic widescreen.

Yeah, but even that detail isn't enough to have the GREASE DVD scream: "Buy me! Buy me!" for me.

And, believe me, I'm a HUGE Grease fan.

I mean, if they had Grease 2 on DVD, I'd scoop that up immediately, cause the laserdisc and VHS are only in pan/scan, and I'm sure the DVD would have THAT to offer.

Here, for GREASE 1, the DVD doesn't offer enough to make me want to upgrade my widescreen laserdisc.

jeffkjoe 09-23-02 08:01 PM

I also want to thank Blade for posting this news in the first place, because it serves as a warning for us DVD collectors.

At least NEW LINE clearly announed from the start that there would be BARE-BONES and SPECIAL EDITION LOTR editions from the get-go.

Here, PARAMOUNT chooses not to warn us ahead of time, and I believe that's savvy, albeit annoying, business strategy.

Sunday Morning 09-23-02 08:06 PM

I will not buy grease until grease 2 is released on dvd.

that's my word.

JimRochester 09-23-02 08:26 PM

I'll probably grab it anyway. 2 years is long enough to justify owning the basic version then upgrading.

Giles 09-23-02 08:57 PM

This type of bone-headed release schedule from Paramount, doesn't help their image as being one the worst Home Video Companies on the market (IMO). They hold back on supplements, they have never released a single DVD with DTS sound, some titles that should be anamorphic aren't, the list is endless. PHV seems to be run by folks whose braintanks are on close to empty. I am sure there are a number of DVDtalkers who could run Paramount's DVD department 10 times better than they are currently doing.

Sparrow 09-23-02 09:07 PM

That's expected - there seems to be so much more to add to this release! But, I need my fix now, so I plan to pick this up tomorrow.

And don't forget Buena Vista with Pearl Harbor.

While i'm glad there'll be an SE, this just reeks and is to be totally expected from Paramount. I agree with Giles. We should storm Paramount and take it over.

The only good thing about this is that Grease II should be out by then.

Maybe not...

BAREBONES??! Last time I checked, LOTR had 2 discs, with enough initial extras to send a cat into epileptic fits. If that's what you call barebones, I'd love to see your definition of Limited Ultimate Special Deluxe Collector's Edition. How many discs are we talking about here? 32? 33? 34?!

But point well taken.

I'm hungry.

Big surprise. Paramount=dumbest studios. I still will probably pick the dvd now, since i like the movie a lot.

Grease is the WORD! *bops head* Paramount is NOT!

HotThang 09-23-02 10:06 PM

Heh. I will be happy to own both! My video tape is worn and sounds like crap so I will definitely pay the 14.99 to replace it! I can wait another cuppla years down the road for the extras. :-)

:johnwoo: Paramount

They could have at least told us themselves.

Pants 09-24-02 11:45 AM

And the boycott continues.....
Paramount is scum!
If you love the DVD format, please don't buy this DVD! Rent it. Buy it used next week on ebay (there will be a million of them once this rumor of a SE gets out). Buy it used anywhere. Just don't buy it yourself. By buying this title you are sending a certified letter directly to Paramount Home Video that says, "I like it when you $hit on me. Thank you, here's my money."

DON'T BUY THIS DISC

Chuck L 09-24-02 11:52 AM

As I have said in another forum, anyone that did not see this coming woke up just yesterday.

In the light of the product that is forthcoming for Saturday Night Fever, anyone that thought that this was a true Special Edition for Grease has been watching Pretty Woman way to much.

If it makes money, and no matter what form Grease has been in it has made money, this title is simply to important for them to overlook as a TRUE Special Edition.

GuessWho 09-24-02 11:58 AM

I will buy today and then eBay in 2 years... (same with Clerks, 2004 is gonna be an upgrade year) No biggie.

Let me do the covers!

waskydiver 09-24-02 12:52 PM

I don't know... perhaps I am just being uninformed and optimistic, but I would think that by 2004 rolls around that HD-DVD might be on the horizon.
