Not as long as they have people willing to upgrade their copies of Grease on DVD :)

Besides, 2002 is almost over, '04 is less than a year and a half away. I still think HD DVD is a ways off.

And Paramount: to quote one of the best movie critics ever, "This stinks!"

wow!
i can't get over all the venom being spewed in the mountains direction.
they are far from being one of the worst dvd producers in my eyes.
just having the balls to release Prophecy in anamorphic widescreen, makes them a-ok in my book.

3 things struck me as i was watching it this morning;
1) i actually still like the movie as much as i did 24 years ago.
2) the transfer is nicer than i was expecting, considering its been sitting around for 4 years.
3) even though the original dialouge, piped squarely thru the center, sounds a little bit tinny, when the music kicks in it sounds freaking awesome.
why is DTS so important? whats good here is wonderful enough for me.

hell, even the flimsy packaging doesn't bother me.
great movie, well presented.
i'm now very happy i have it.
its going to be getting a lot more play than i would have expected.
since i rarely watch supplemental material more than once, i'll be quite happy for the next year and 1/2 and beyond.

Now, if the next transfer is considerably better, thats a different story...

With much excitement I just picked up the "Grease" (1978) Widescreen DVD (didn't know about the 2004 release) and rushed home to watch bits of it. I was greatly disappointed by the video and audio quality and the DVD overall!

I read DVDSavant's review of it here and I'd have to agree strongly with him/her on the audio quality of the DVD....most of the movie, it feels like you're listening to a mono recording in a sound studio. The sound is also very softly recorded and you'll find yourself pumping up the receiver's volume....I can't remember the last time I turned up my Denon 4800's volume to -11 for comfortable movie listening.

The Video quality is very mediocre as is the menu and extras.

The whole DVD reeks of a SE or Criterion version coming out ...WHAT A DISAPPOINTING DVD!!!

ChristopherS 09-24-02 05:36 PM

even though they are being boneheads about it, it's good to know they plan a SE for the future and it's not all about disapointing fans.

Dr. DVD 09-24-02 08:36 PM

This is the most sorry a$$ excuse for a high profile DVD release I have ever seen. The menus don't even have sound! This looks like it was printed about four years ago when DVDs were still in there infancy stage.

A big thumbs down from me. I give this DVD two weeks to help me out should a girl get interested, after that, it's off to the re-sale store. (This DVD stopped entertaining me in about, oh...[Eric Bischoff] THREE MINUTES!!![/Eric Bischoff].)

I wonder if that may indeed be the case...that we're watching a DVD that was mastered to be released with Paramount's first non-divx DVD batch.

From Peter Bracke's article over at DVDFile, this may be the case.

Yeah, I was thinking about that...this title's been tied up in legal problems since it was announced. Now that it's been cleared up, maybe they just wanted to get the movie out there as soon as possible, and having paid for the work to be done on this initial release, they didn't want to waste their money and scrap it for a new SE DVD. So they put this out and then start working on an SE to put out in 2 years.

But, Damn, they coulda told us this...sure the lemmings that rent at Blockbuster wouldn't care, but the people that actually give a damn about movies/dvd would like to know so they could shop accordingly.

All i'm saying is a heads up would've been nice. It worked for Buena Vista and it worked for New Line. It would've done wonders for Paramount's DVD image.

If this was in response to my post, I pretty much said the same thing when I started this thread, so no argument from me. :)

It is now 16 months later. I have eaten. I am curious as to if there are any developments on this. I remembered reading about this (in this exact thread, I'm sure) and it's the reason I kept holding off. But when I checked my employee price on the DVD and noticed it was in a keepcase rather than that flimsy cardboard and also had the songbook... well, for $6, I had to pick it up to tide me over to the re-release (even if it's this year). I figure, hey, I can always sell this one when the new one is announced and pretty much get back what I paid for it. So, any news?

<---- still waiting... :(
i wanna get the SE & Grease 2

DavidH 01-22-04 04:43 PM

Yes, clearly the transfer was made several years back. DVDs made today (especially by Paramount) don't contain nearly that many compression artifacts.

NEUMANN 01-22-04 06:04 PM

I can't believe people that really liked this movie would wait 2 years for an se that still has not been anounced, you might as well have got the thing in 2002 enjoyed it for a couple years and just sell it and get the new one when it comes out, this only aplies to people that really liked the movie.

BlackBeauty92 01-22-04 06:36 PM

<--- spend the $$$ on something else at the time :D

sorry...

i really like the movie... honest :)

kevin75 01-22-04 07:20 PM

i actually bought and have enjoyed the movie that has so far been released. however, i will probably upgrade when the SE is announced.

I feel the same way about a lot of movies. Greese, Goodfellas, and a few others. I've lost track of the number of times I've seen these DVDs available for $6-10 or so. Yet some "fans" of these films *still* hold out for a mythical SE.

Drexl 12-20-04 07:53 AM

Well, I guess it's time to retire this thread. Any word of when this will come out?

TomOpus 12-20-04 09:48 AM

Wow... time flies. I'm still glad I got it on release day instead of waiting.

GuessWho 12-20-04 09:52 AM

I'd say it WAS retired... until now.

riley_dude 12-20-04 11:47 AM

I read on another board that it would be out in 2005 but that was all the info posted. I sure hope they do come out with a Special Edition soon.

Cameron 12-20-04 03:55 PM

i got the current disc for 65 cents...so i bet i could get my money back.
