Well, thats really too bad, because it is a great genre. While Leone was no doubt the A-List director of Spaghetti Westerns (a b-film genre), there were hundreds/thousands of Spaghetti Westerns made, so naturally many will be lackluster of poor. But there are some really worhtwhile films, certainly preferrable with their excess, style, and exploitative content to the mainly stiff, unrealistically noble cowboy westerns the US produced.

and Xytraguptorh. Like we said, have a little trepidation about Django Strikes Back (its basically just a bad, cheap 80's action movie... but, I own it too since it comes in the two-pack) and Four Horsemen which really seems to be one of the biggest "love it or hate it" films I've run across.

Actually Bullet For The General was good and Im thinking of getting the first Django..I guess I wont pick up a lot of thses sight unseen until I can read a solid review on them..

is Companeros worth picking up?

**His craftsmanship as a director had improved greatly since the (at times) amatuerish DJANGO. The editing & cinematography is impressive as well, In fact the opening 5 minutes is one of my favorite Intros in cinema.

Here is that review I promised. It is still in the preview stage. Good film, definitely belongs in the “B” to “C” grade of Spaghetti Westerns, but it has a very unique plot, and sufficiently quirky direction and performances...

Anchor Bay has put DJANGO KILL! back on thier website, this time its listed under the July-December 2002 range instead of the January-June 2002.

Well I broke down and got The Great Silence for 20 bucks..I must say this was well worth the bucks!!! This has to be the best of all the non Leone spaghetti westerns Ive seen so far..I thought Django was good but this one was by far an excellent movie-and the transfer was awesome..I just wish we could get un-dubbed versions of all these-the dubbing just cheapens the movie and makes them all sound like Speed Racer cartoons

Glad you enjoyed it, great movie... And, well, they were always intended to be dubbed, intentionally made for the International market and often with International casts (one actor speaking Spanish or Italian to an actor speaking English). Most (I cant think of one that wasnt) were made without sound, so no matter what language you would hear- it would be dubbed.

didnt know about the no sound thing-its weird that you mention that though as the alternate happy ending on the great silence was completely silent

Does anyone know of an online retailer who carries Cut Throats Nine? I can't find it at amazon or deepdiscountdvd. Also, has anyone found The Great Silence for a better price than amazon's $26? I want to buy it, but I'm really in no hurry to pay that much for a movie I've never seen. Deepdiscountdvd apparently doesn't carry that title either.

I recently bought Django, Four of the Apocalypse, and A Bullet for the General. Of the three, Django is really my favorite. It's action packed and hilarious, even better than I expected. A Bullet for the General was enjoyable too, though not nearly as "fun" a film as Django. Four of the Apocalypse was only fair, though still worth owning. I think it would have been a much better film if it wasn't for the horribly dated, and misplaced, folk music in the soundtrack. It's really not as fast paced as a lot of other westerns, but still contains some interesting scenery, and quite a bit of gore--at least in the previously-deleted scenes.

One comment about Django: Anchor Bay lists its aspect ratio as 1.66:1. What's strange is that only the opening titles are in that AR. During the title sequence, there are black vertical bars on the sides of my 16:9 TV (which there apparently should be for a 1.66:1 movie). After that, though, the movie fills the screen completely. So unless the horizontal overscan is really bad on my TV, the movie is actually presented in 1.78:1. Anyone comments about that?

I got the Great Silence from DVD Planet for around 20 bucks with shipping..I was hesitant on paying that much for a movie Ive never seen but it was well worth it..better than all the ones you have list which I recenlt bought also..try using www.dvdpricesearch.com to find the others you are looking for

The only place it seems to be at is Luminous Film and Video. Its alow key release from a small company so none of the big online retaliers will have it. If you click on the "Buy Me" link in my DVDTalk review it will take you straght to it.

Does anyone know if Great Silence had a recent price drop? Dvdpricesearch says the MSRP is 19.99 but the lowest price found is 21.56.

FINALLY saw Four/Apocalypse and guess what? I liked it! Its another one of those slow & mysterious SW's like Charley One Eye which doesn't focus on standard themes within the genre. Still a few flaws though. Wasn't clear on why the sheriff let the group leave town in the beginning and thought that there was a little too much time spent in that snow town. Plus a bit more of screentime for Chaco would have been more acceptable.

Now about the music..After hearing so many comparisons to KEOMA's folk-song narrative, I was not let down. I found this composition to be much more tolerable and smoother. (Was that Simon & Garfunkel? lol) and the instrumental score was beautiful. Not only among the best pieces of music in the genre, but now one of my favorites in general cinema.

MY NAME IS NOBODY is different than most spaghetti westerns in that it is (IMHO) more of a mainstream, big budget comedy in a western setting than a true euro-western. The things I love about spaghettis--low budget, in-your-face-nihilism. outrageous plots, bizzare opponents, omnipresent menace aren't in evidence here. Everybody's "simpatico". It's not that it's "bad" (I own the LD), but it's "different" (you could make the argument that it was the end of an era) and should be approached as such. If you are expecting THE DOLLARS TRILOGY, THE GREAT SILENCE or ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST you won't find it here.

MY NAME IS NOBODY is the comic send-off of the Spaghettis. Believed to be the last commercialized film of the genre with Leone producing (Legend has it that he directed quite a few sequences) and with *possibly* Morricone's last western score (A great score with tracks like, "Piu' delle valcherie, Good luck Jack, & Sei Sei Qualcano E' Colpa Mia which was later used briefly in Tom Hanks' THE 'BURBS)

As Doc Moonlight pointed out, don't expect this one to a salute to the glory days of the DOLLARS trilogy. But if you are a fan of the TRINITY era, waste no time with this one!

Well Im just getting into the SW's (Never looked past the DOLLARS trilogy before until recently...."me an idiot") and now Im just trying to get a list of some good ones to buy.But Im looking to buy the violent ones first : ) and then the comedy ones later.So i think Ill hold off for a while on that one and then eventually pick it up on down the road.

I think both have a MSRP of around 14.95. They also have a couple of recent VCI Spaghetti titles I was looking for, Find a Place to Die and Today we Kill, Tomorrow we Die but they were 9.99 and 14.95 the MSRP price on their site and not discounted any. Hopefully they will correct these prices soon to around 7.00-8.00 each and they will have another sale!

I found Find A Place to Die for 5.32 at Deepdiscountdvd.com today. It was listed at full msrp in my message from 7/13. Still waiting for them to list Today We Kill...Tomorrow We Die for a sweet price...it was the other title that was full msrp at the time but disappeared and is still missing.

Thanks to AMC, I finally was able to watch ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST over the weekend (unfortunately, it was pan-and-scan which just seemed so wrong!) What a fantastic movie! Does anyone have any info on what's going on at Paramount with this movie. I have to own it now, and I would love to see a widescreen version of it. Any new info out there?

Hello all, I just had a chance to read through this thread and while I haven't seen many of the films discussed so far, I would like to contribute by adding a film called (at least that is the name I watched it under) The Deserter (1971) starring Bekim Fehmiu. The film also featured Richard Crenna, Chuck Connors, Ricardo Montalban, and Woody Strode. I haven't seen it in many years but I thought it was a very solid Western when I first saw it on broadcast TV years ago. Does anyone remember this film? It does not seem to be available on DVD yet.
