Best/Worst DVD Packaging ?

What are your favourite dvd case designs ? Least favourite ? I know that most people don't like the cardboard snapper cases. I don't mind them too much. I know that other dvd cases can get caught up in the plastic tab of the snapper, but I've never really had that much trouble with them. My favourite case design is the 4 disc extended edition of The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, the Voltron tins, the Night At The Museum lenticular cover, or the Pinocchio blu-ray.

Favorite?
I can get behind Steelbooks, and The Departed is an especially striking one. Otherwise, I'd have to go with what Fox has been using to release/re-release their TV season sets, especially since space is becoming somewhat of an issue for me;

Least Favorite?
Kind of a draw between the packaging for Wall-E and There Will be Blood 2-disc. The discs are housed in sleeves in the fold-out packaging, and while I haven't had any trouble playing them, I'd like them better if the discs were more secure and easy to pop out.

Fraggle Rock: Complete Series Collection. Looks great from the outside but every disc becomes loose inside. Lionsagate is offering a replacement program for scratched discs due to this packaging.

But besides that above... Any case that does not hold a disc properly. Disc should float. Not stack on top of one another or go into sleeves. There is only 1 correct way to store a DVD so why do companies insist on going the incorrect way?

Ditto on those. I like anything that holds a disc properly without forcing you to bend the disc to get it off the hub.

Dislikes are anything that stacks discs on a hub, or has a loose disc in the case (like in a paper sleeve). I also dont care for the fold out gatefold packaging, like the ones that the buffy seasons used to come in. Where you have to unfold about 7 feet to get to that last disc. I also dont like non standard packaging, but with an asterisk. I like sets like the mad men zippo, Lebowski bowling ball, etc. But dont like sets like Schindlers list, and There will be Blood, that came in those book type things. If they are going to make the case roughly the size of a regular dvd case, use a regular dvd case.

Totally agree! I love the Alien Quadrilogy set, but it's a real pain in the ass to unfold the packaging to get to the discs.

Re: Best/Worst DVD Packaging ?

I'm definitely loving the trend towards smaller packaging, and have even converted some of my older stuff to slim cases.

I like how the M*A*S*H Martinis and Medicine box looks on the outside, but when I saw the inside of my aunt's copy, I hated how they were all in paper slots. We ended up buying all 11 seasons in the regular cases instead (found them all used fairly cheap).

Also like the Wicker Man wooden box from Anchor Bay. First it looks neat on my shelf, and second, the two discs are in a nice little CD sized jewel case which I wish the rest of the industry had adopted.

All steelbook cases are the best in packaging.

I agree. I was about to buy them individually but I wanted the 2 bonus discs. So I caved.

Why didn't you buy M*A*S*H - Goodbye, Farewell & Amen if you wanted the bonus discs?

Best: Steelbooks or the Rome season sets.

Worst: The Punisher Extended Cut, although it comes in a regular Amaray case nowadays.

I didn't know the 2 bonus discs came with it.

I also have to say that Wall-E 1 & 3 disc are both terrible packaging.

Agreed on Wall-e. I heard it won some award for the packaging, but I think it's junk. How are you going to release a dvd, that you know alot of people are going to buy for kids, in a paper package?
