Hate for those cases with the little locking tabs.

I think I first encounted these things a couple years ago on my copy of Shawn of the Dead. You know, those two flip up tabs on the side of the case you have to snap up before you can open case? whoever designed those things needs to DIAF. (Is there even a brand name for them?)

So, a show of hands of everyone who breaks those things off first thing when they get home.

I haven't gotten around to ripping the tabs off. But yeah, those cases are annoying.

Those cases suck. Another lame attempt at theft protection.

Instead of ripping the tabs off, I slice each of them down the center, so the case opens as normal and the tabs remain intact. Looks the same but works much better

If I'm not mistake, I remember getting one once and I noticed it had instructions, and it said to break these tabs off to open it. They are annoying, but I don't mind that much. I leave them alone, but the idea of slicing them down the middle seems tempting.

Yeah, never thought about cutting them down the middle...I usually just bend 'em all the way back. If they don't break right off, I pull out the Exacto Knife and slice 'em off.

For a while, I didn't worry about them. However, when I finally got enough shelving to display the collection (NOTE TO SELF: gotta take pics), I sat down and started cutting all of them off. I wouldn't have made the effort just to do that, but I also had to pull of a lot of security stickers, too.

Just be careful and not slice your finger(s). That smarts! LOL

A solid 50% of my collection contain these cases. I didn't like them at first, but since I have alot of Universal and Paramount movies, I have learned to adjust to them. Something worse was when they started placing the locking tabs on 2 disc dvd cases.

It isn't a brand in and of itself, it's a security feature that gets added on to existing brands. I see them used on Amaray brand cases the most often. Paramount really loves using them for some reason.

My friend is fixated on keeping the little tabs on. I keep trying to convince him that they are MEANT to be taken off after purchase, but he thinks it makes the case look strange. I specifically remember that when I purchased "Sky Captain and the World of Tommorrow" the side sticker says to take them off but I feel like I'm the only one that ever does. How about you guys?

I have kept mine on, because I too think it makes them look strange. However, I admit I'm tempted to cut them down the middle as to not make them look strange, yet still render them ineffective.

It's not an attempt at theft protection. It's just a bad idea like snapper cases were.

Jebus, I never even realized they were supposed to be taken off.

Guess I'm not as big a rebel as I thought.

most DVD's are coming with them now. i actually like them. something about keeping everything more secure. yes, it is a little annoying opening them and stuff, but i like them and even think it gives the case a little more weight which i like.

Re: Hate for those cases with the little locking tabs.

I first noticed these several years ago. My niece was just a toddler then, and her parents didn't care at all if she grabbed a DVD. We discouraged that at our apartment, of course, but just to be safe I actually swapped my James Bond DVD's into these locking cases. At the time, these were the Special Editions, and were mostly out of print except in box sets. I also made sure that any kid-oriented titles that were on shelves she could reach were in these.

Re: Hate for those cases with the little locking tabs.

I've gotten a couple of these over the years. These don't seem to come on many titles. They dont bother me. I leave them on.

Most of the newer WWE DVDs are coming in these cases. Yuck.

I'm not a fan either. I just break them off when I open my new discs.

Re: Hate for those cases with the little locking tabs.

I dislike those Label Tapes that are placed across the seams (Sometimes on three sides) that are hard to peel off and often leave a sticky residue on the cases!

They can be a real pain in the @$$!
