I realize he has a lot of DVDs, but...but...why?!?!?!

cant say im a fan of that method, but he sure does have it nailed eh? i guess whatever works for ya. seems like quite a waste of time though just to save some space...

also does he just not ever buy any SE's No Steelbooks? No TV box sets? What do you do with trilogy boxes?

No way I would ever do this! You can still achive this type of storage without destroying the original package.

I'd think that over time the ink on the insert beneath the dvd would seep onto the discs.

My dad just puts them in binders, leaves the inserts in the cases and stores the cases in a box in the garage. Even THAT method makes me wince.

Are we now so bored that we need to turn outside of DVDtalk to find people to criticize?

Why even buy them brand-new if you're gonna do that to them? I should post photos of how I open my DVDs- it's the opposite of what that guy does.

Seems like there could be a DVDProfiler report that would allow you to simply print a jewel size pic of the cover +/- other information. Keep the covers stored in the attic. No cutting for Bob's sake.

He probably buys all his movies full screen, so they can fit on the television box. If the movies comes only in widescreen, then he'll jinzu the sides off.

I regularly check the run-time information to figure out which movie to watch. That way I don't start a 130 minute movie if I only have an hour and a half before bedtime. He throws that information away.

It also seems a pity to cut the cover art. Even if the purpose of owning a DVD is having the movie.

Someone posted something similar to this method in the Collection and HT thread, I personally wouldnt do it, but if you have limited space to work with I guess go for it.

Why does he cut it and throw it out. Just keep the cases elsewhere. I have hundreds of CD cases in a box somewhere but the discs handy.

While this isn't a method that I'd use... everyone who's saying "why would someone do this just to save space" or "why doesn't he just store the cases elsewhere" must never have lived in a studio apartment in a city.

Sometimes, there's no "elsewhere" to store stuff. 700 DVD cases can take up a fair amount of real estate. Sometimes it's a choice between not owning DVDs or doing something creative to make sure they don't dominate your entire living space.


Personally, I would find a method that actually allowed you to retain the paper materials without slicing them so badly... but I suppose if you have no plans to ever resell your stuff and you don't care about packaging, this might make sense.

I agree. I used to use binders, and may have to go back to them someday due to space. But the binders I used were DVD sized, with a pocket in back for the DVD and in front for the insert, which would also hold the paper sleeve if one had to throw the cases away.

I clicked that link and have just had a glimpse of what I can only imagine HELL looks like.

it was indeed pretty bad.
Space is an issue for me, but by no means would I EVER do that.
