Oppinion on DVD and CD Tins
What is everyones oppinion on Metal DVD / CD Cases? I have seen a couple of posts regarding the Disney Tins from last year, and it sparked my interest to see if everyone actualy likes the special eddition cases or not.
What is your favorit type of case?
Plastic DVD Case
Cinepak - the one that folds out...
Etc.?

I bought the Akira Tin, but I found it to be too impractical, so I just slapped the discs into an amaray, printed a spine, and stored the tin in a closet. Maybe when I have more room to display stuff, I'll whip it out again.
Generally, the smaller the case, the better. Thinpaks are great!

In most cases (hardy har har) I would unless they were about the same price and the metal case was really cool for some reason. I don't buy DVDs for the packaging (i.e., to collect them), I buy them for viewing. Also, I don't tend to beat the Hell out of my DVDs, so the extra durability offered by a metal case is unnecessary.

I don't mind the metal cases as my DVD racks are in the living room and its nice to have a few nice sets on display. Take them or leave them in my book, they are cool but not necessary to make the DVD more appealing. I'd prefer they focused on a packed DVD rather then the case but they are cool for a switchup from time to time.

I also have the Wicker Man wooden box, but since it's not a series I keep that DVD in the box. It's definitely harder to display these things, though.
However, I don't like the Thinpaks. I want to be able to read the spine from a few feet away.

And speaking of "unusual" cases, I still plan to get the Blind Dead Coffin Box, the Phantasm "sphere" collection, and the Hellraiser "lament cube" set.
Overall, if the packaging is REALLY cool, I'm geek enough to get it. The Japanese "Alien" set (in an Alien head replica) would be on my shelf too, if it didn't cost so much...

I love cool packaging (for movies that I like...)
I have the Akira tin, The Educational Archives lunchbox, the Armitage Dual Matrix lunchbox, Highlander Millennium Edition, All of the Disney Treasures except for the last wave, the Evil Dead Book of the Dead, and all of the Anchor Bay tins including the Wicker Man wooden box (except Candy, and I'm thinking about getting both versions - the "Pill" version and the "chocolate" version.)

Bandai had it out to show at the Anime Expo 2005 and reports are that it is *very* sturdy and well-made. So, um, w00t!

Sometimes I get movies just for the packaging or if I can get a good deal on it, for instance the recent DDD price error on Perfect Storm. Other times for movies I really enjoy like Scarface or Evil Dead it's cool to have really cool looking packaging.

i like cool packaging as long as its practical and fits with the rest of my dvds, like the Vista series, digipaks, stuff like Seven and Unbreakable. Tins can look nice, but i don't like it if they are bulky or lead to loose DVD's (Saving Private Ryan im looking in your direction). Just give me something simple.

I collect DVDs and movie related items, period. In my latter days of collecting, I've begun to search for the best transfer/soundtrack on a DVD and that's pretty much it. Though, if one happens to be available in a LE, SE, CE .. etc. .. tin, I'm there as long as it's a movie .. case .. that I truly enjoy more than most and would like to display it. For instance, I just paid quite a bit more than standard fair for a R2 LE Memorial Tin of Shawshank Redemption from Japan. The tin is a replica (of sort) of the one Red finds his directions in at towards the end of the film. It's beautiful .. but so is the film. It's also the most unique case that I own. Thankfully, it arrived in perfect condition. But that's the catch .. and the only reason why I'm skeptical of tins .. shipping problems. Since I order most all my DVDs online these days, tins get damaged more easily than plastic case types. Though, if that wasn't a concern .. I'd have no problem paying a little extra even for, what I consider to be, better packaging.

I think my favorite type of case would have to be the metal tin that the SE of appleseed came in. I think a few other DVDs came in the same type of case as well but can't remember what they were.

It just looks classy in my opinion.

BUMP!! I want to bump this, because I have issues with the goddamned Akira tin.
It sat in storage for 2.5 years. It had sat horizontally. I opened it up, and the left side plastic in-lay tray had come undone and had fallen on top of the right side. I placed it back, but when I closed the tin, it wouldn't close, as the tray wasn't in the right position. That sumbitch was a pain to take off again. Long story short, it's in there, but it's too close the tin hinge, so it won't close properly. I HATE this bloody thing!!
Secondly, I don't like the style of disc clasp--Looney Tunes Vol. 2 has the same. I CAN'T GET THE FUKKING DISCS OUT. I have to really bend and pull the disc while pressing down the stupid button to get them out. I'm putting the discs in something else. This is my biggest problem right here--I can't get the discs out without damaging them! Lame.
I don't think I've ever seen regular Amaray cases with this kind of clasp. I hate it!

Generally I prefer standard plastic keepcases, but if a tin is practical to open and close, is not too tall, rounded or oddly shaped to sit along side my other DVD's on the shelf, and doesn't have any weird protruding screws/bolts or sharp funky edges that will scrape/damage my other DVD's, then I'm on board.
