I wish i could say i thought about you when i bought my disc :( ;)

No insert encourages people to pirate discs. Cheap crappy overall packaging is going to be the death of DVD's. Makes them lose collectability and gotta have it factor.

All discs should have inserts. All the time. Always.............forever.

Like I said before. Waste of money and paper.

Waste of money? How do you figure, or is this where I sympathize with the movie studio? I don't care what they're spending, it's not like this movie wasn't profitable, I think a little insert would be nice, since most movies do have them and they are good for chapter listings. It surely increases the presentation of the box and is good for us collectors. The savings aren't passed to the consumer in any way so I really could care less about them wasting money.

Of course, this isn't a deciding factor for me, but I'd much rather have an insert nonetheless. If they wanted to save paper, they could've left out the silly $50 rebate on stuff I didn't and don't intend to buy and has nothing to do with Shrek or movies in general.

fumanstan 11-06-04 10:09 PM

Yup, i agree. There are far worse things as far as wasted paper and money. I like inserts... even the plain single sheet ones i'll take a look at and occasionally glance at the scene selection list. Personally, i wish all studios would take the time to make a few pages with some written words on the film.

If there's an insert - fine, good, nice.

If there's no insert - ditto.

Maybe it's because I'm a newcomer to DVD, having my player less than two years now. It doesn't really matter to me if there's an insert or not. It's what's on the disc that should matter most.

I guess the question now becomes - are you going to cut up and use the coupons, or keep them intact and not use them to keep your purchase "complete." ;)

mike01 11-07-04 01:01 AM

no insert

Ginsu 11-07-04 02:30 AM

Whats on the disc DOES matter most.

However I do not want a bunch hand lettered discs in a plastic baggy either.

If the studios want to fight piracy the way to do it is keep the presentation and overall product at a very high standard. Not to cut corners and save pennies de-valuing thier own product.

Look at how excited people get about cover art alone. Or really nice sets like LOTR:EE. It is not just the disc!

I even bought the Pearl Harbor Vista Series, beautiful set. Before you flame me for that, take a look at the dogs in your own collection! : )

Anything in the package not film related gets trashed, including the little security tab.

Of course! That explains the forced trailers before the menu. Sorry, having to hit fast forward and not be able to hit 'menu' counts as forced to me.

Why don't they just put the trailers on the P&S version only. People who like those trailers are not widescreen people anyways.

Seeing that I collect records, I always love it when a record comes with an insert. DVDs on the other hand I don't care if they have one or not. I just consider it a nice bonus if the disc comes with a cool booklet insert with a story about the film or something like that. If it is just a one sheet with a chapter list on it, it is a waste of paper to me.

Sorry but cheap packaging or no inserts are not gonna be the "death of DVD's".

Nothing is gonna be the death of DVD's anytime soon.

You are wrong.

I have a habit (as I'm sure a lot of people do) of lightly shaking the case to make sure the disc hasn't slipped out of it's holder and is flying around inside getting scratched up. I shook Shrek 2 and heard a very distinct loose shaking sound. I continued to shake all the copies they had, and got the same loose sound. I went ahead and bought one, and opened it on the way out the door of the store, and found it was only the stupid coupons. Whew!

Did anyone else think their disc had slipped loose?

Ha ha ha! I did the same thing. I thought for sure my disc was loose.

And I actually use the inserts. There's no chapter names on Shrek 2 so it is a little hard to figure the scenes out. I mean it does play a little clip from the scene but that isn't enough. It took me awhile to find the Puss N Boots scene.

Nope, I use the inserts all the time to jump to demo high quality A/V chapters for my HT. Much easier to look at the chapter insert and type "29" on my remote than having to navigate through ten pages of animated menus.

I've been put in my place by someone living in a vagina and someone in a sewer.

Keep the inserts in!

My work is done here.

Duality 11-08-04 02:43 PM

Ginsu...

I'm with you. Inserts with DVDs are just as important as the booklets and inserts that come with CDs.

As for people not wanting the inserts, why don't you guys discard the entire keepcase and use a folder storage option? It's amazing that you all are so proud of displaying those bulky boxes! As for me, hold the vagina and the sewer!

MJKTool 11-08-04 02:58 PM

haha

jiggawhat 11-08-04 04:06 PM

If any of you have the official xbox magazine they have cover that doubles as an insert. They have a clear thincase and the cover is printed on both sides. When you open up the case it's got all the info printed on the other side of the cover. Very clever way to do it.

chemosh6969 11-08-04 07:28 PM

Some movies come with an insert listing chapter stops, some come with a booklet.

My Shrek 2 came with an insert. It was coupons.

Beyond_Doubt 11-15-04 03:30 AM

I bought the Region 2 special 2 disc set and it had an insert of sorts.
It was the size of a cover folded in half, with the centre spread being adverts for other movies iirc.
I'll have to check again tonight.

I think inserts add to the overall package, giving that slightly better value for money feel.
If it's just a chapter list then it adds little use to the package, but it's good if they carry a little info, or art not on other parts of the packaging.

bhauge 11-15-04 01:55 PM

I just got my copy from the Columbia House DVD Club. It didn't have any inserts (obviously), but it also didn't have any coupons. The other thing I noticed was that the hub didn't look like anything I'd seen before. It has about 8-10 fingers that form something like an umbrella shape. Does this match what other people's cases look like (either from CH or elsewhere)?
