Finally had a chance to research my above latest titles and added those that reviews suggested one way or another. The rest remain unknown if anyone else happens to have access to any of the titles and wishes to check.

First of all, thank you kindly for the info on those three. Second, IGN lists Broken Flowers as coming with an insert. Error on their part?

Broken Flowers comes packaged in a standard Amray case featuring a paper insert that offers plot details, bonus content and technical information.

I just picked up two concert dvds used, and neither had inserts - Something Corporate: Live at the Venutra Theater and Nightwish: From Wishes to Eternity. Does anyone know if they originally came with anything?

hmmm... i dunno. i didn't buy mine when it first came out. i know in some cases later pressings just kinda drop the inserts, but i'm not sure if that's the case with this film. i would put a question mark on that until someone else can check and confirm either way...

ETA: my version of layer cake was the original packaging where the entire cast is on the cover, not the newer pressings where they changed the cover to craig looking bond-like with only sienna and him on the cover. dunno if the change in artwork also resulted in dropping the insert.

On an off chance, I decided to write a couple of the distributors asking for the info. Allumination Film Works, Kino, Koch and Palm Pictures offered quick replies letting me know whether or not their titles did.

Edit: Buena Vista replied with the info on whether their titles did or not also.

Sony Pictures responded with a generic thank you for your feedback, we don't replace inserts and therefore can't reply to your inquiry.

They've beaten me: I now do not expect to see an insert inside any DVD unless it specifically says there is a booklet, and I don't bother to check when there isn't one. I'm pleasantly surprised when I see one. What's next? We open the package to find that the front of the DVD is just plain silver with no label? R.I.P. DVD Inserts

I've always enjoyed getting inserts, booklets, etc with my dvd movies. I feel like your buying the movie with a special treat inside. That's just me. Today slipcovers and alternate covers are the new inserts if you even get those. I always thought Universal had the best inserts because it usually involved pics from the movie, production notes, actor/director quotes, etc.

We Don't Live Here Anymore is a late 2004 release from Warners (and has the proof-of-purchase tabs on the back), so that doesn't have an insert.

I can confirm that the current printings of New Line's LOTR EE sets (the ones with a free Golden Compass movie pass included) still include the booklets with chapter listings and extras index. At least my copy of Fellowship does.

Hi all, was wondering if both Pan's Labyrinth (2DSE) and V for Vendetta (2DSE) came with inserts. Thanks.

Should we start a new thread? The stuff in the first post is horribly out of date. I'd be happy to do it.

Re: The official "Does this movie come with an insert" thread - Part Duex

does the Jessica Lange King Kong have a insert?
- Shadow Panther

Yes. The original pressing from 1999 came with a chapter listing. The 2005 re-release does not. Taking it a bit further the two disc special edition for the original (2005) had a slipcover.

- - -

"Equilibrium" did in fact have an insert, chapter listing. I'm still trying to get that one.

Re: The official "Does this movie come with an insert" thread - Part Duex

Okay... Not sure if anyone is still watching this thread... but I recently went through my collection and made note of movies that I am missing some materials from... My local used DVD place gave me the clear to look through their collection and take the inserts I need for a small price but I wanted to see if any of these in my list actually did not come with an insert so I don't waste my time looking for them...

So... Did these movies come with a paper chapter insert or other insert materials??

I tried to label which edition each DVD is but they are all widescreen... Thanks!

Re: The official "Does this movie come with an insert" thread - Part Duex

I can't help much with individual titles, but in the past have asked questions like this myself and done some solo research. Here are two tips that may reduce your list by maybe 20%...

1) Warner Brothers never released inserts. They went straight from snap packs with a chapter list and photos on the inside from cover to keep case with no inserts. Yes, their DVD's sometimes have stuff inside: time-limited mail order offers or contests, ads for Turner Classic Movies, etc., but never anything like liner notes or chapter lists. I have two WB DVD's that came with mini comic books (the Batman Begins and Constantine 2-disk Deluxe Editions), but these are separate entities altogether. So you can scrub titles like Batman Begins, Mask of the Phantasm, and Casablanca.

2) Paramount included chapter listings (and possibly nothing more), but only for a relatively short time. Using my collection and Amazon's release dates as a guide, they stopped somewhere between November 2003 and October 2004. Any Paramount title with proof-of-purchase marks on the back did not originally ship with an insert. But a new, sealed DVD lacking proof-of-purchase marks doesn't necessarily have an insert either. (Apparently they were sloppy on matching artwork, DVD, case, and insert.) But at some point it did. This would scrub titles like Sky Captain and Witness, if it's the Collector's Edition.

For Edward Scissorhands, the "Widescreen Anniversary Edition" did originally have a 4-page insert. Caveat: this version (same as the "10th Anniversary Edition") has been re-released a number of different ways, so it's hard to say exactly which releases (i.e. the steelbook, a different cover, etc.) had it and which didn't.

Hope that helps!

Addendum: for anybody reading this, I have a separate thread (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk-co...og-titles.html ) for information on Columbia/Sony catalog titles. I'm also on the cusp of asking about Image Entertainment/Wade Williams classic sci-fi/horror titles with liner notes or inserts.

Izurawski,

I checked the titles that I have from your list, and I found that the following had inserts:

Dead Poets Society
Forrest Gump
Galaxy Quest
October Sky

I believe that the versions I own of these were all the first release on DVD.

I don't think this is true.

Troy (theatrical version) two disc widescreen came with a 4 page chapter insert and movie info. This is a Warner Brothers release.

I know because I have it.

I don't know if the one disc with just the movie came with an insert.

I originally got that tip from this site, probably a thread in this forum. I don't buy lots of new releases, but it's held true for me so far. I do own the Batman Begins 2-disk Special Edition (with only an 8-page mail order catalog and a coupon for Norton Internet Security), the Casablanca 2-disk Special Edition (digipak in slipcase, no inserts), and Mask of the Phantasm (keep case, no inserts), so can vouch for at least those titles. I would have to track down the original post, but still think the above is a good rule of thumb, possibly excluding blockbuster new releases.

Does anyone know if The X-Files: I Want to Believe (Three Disc Ultimate X-Phile edition) came with a chapter insert or booklet?

I ask because I know that The X-Files: Fight the Future DVD came with a chapter insert/booklet.
