I won't play the who spends the most game....because I don't care. But just looking at my recent reciepts...and add on the huge import order I'm about to make....then I'm looking at about $1,845 for the year so far. Big deal.

All that makes me aware of is.....I'm not buying enough.

One things for sure. laserdogg and myself rule this city.

Sheesh, people sure are concerned about who spends the most here. What pride is there in that? How about who spends the least? I buy lots of DVDs, but I also sell them. I often make profits, especially when I buy OOP DVDs, which I watch all the way though (including special features) but ultimately do not keep. I also use Columbia House a lot. I end up making profits at the end of the month. I'm averaging a cost of $1.71 per DVD right now, when all is said and done (I'm in the middle of page 1, if you want to check out my math and rationale).

slowcloud:

If you sold off some of those DVDs, you can't count them towards your total number purchased because that would be double-counting (since you've already counted the money earned from those sales towards your total spent). So since you actually kept 21 DVDs, your actual average is:

$55/21 DVDs = $2.62/DVD

As for me, I don't care about how much people spend--it might be interesting if everyone earned the same salaries but of course they don't--but I do care about accuracy. I just don't think the thread makes sense without it.

You are correct on all counts, illennium. The DVDs I sold are indeed gone from my collection, and I used the profits to buy others, so to say, so your math is much more accurate than mine was. Sloppy error on my part.

Is it just me, or did the month of March just absolutely rock everyone's wallet? Quickly glancing through the pages on this thread, it seems that many people spent double, even triple what they spent in January and February combined. I know I'm one of those who fell victim to March ($228) compared to Jan, Feb, and April thus far (about $185). Given my limited income as a college student, that's a pretty big ouch.

So far, I've spent the most in January, mainly due to picking up a couple of OOP Criterions for retail. If I hadn't done that, I would've came in about average for that month. I think June is gonna be the killer month for me this year (at least so far).

I didn't really keep track of what I bought the first three months of the year, but going back through DVD Profiler, I can make an educated guess. From here on out, I will be tracking everything I buy. I've been meaning to do this on my own on a spreadsheet for a while now (not just DVDs, but CDs, concert tickets, beer, all kinds of stuff I would like to keep track of how much I spend on).

January (prices are a rough estimate)
Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle - 20.00
Saving Private Ryan: Anniversary Edition - 10.00
Thirteen - 10.00
Total for January: $40.00

February (prices are a rough estimate)
The Shield: Complete First Season - 50.00
The Shield: Complete Third Season - 45.00
Arrested Development: Season One - 35.00
Total for February: $130.00

March (prices are a rough estimate)
Hoosiers: Collectors Edition - 18.00
Total for March: $18.00

April
Bought the following DVDs used from a friend for 200.00.
-The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection

I understand that, as I've edited my first post numerous times. I was referring more to whoever it was that was tallying up the top 10 spenders, thats all.

I don't count gift cards as a reduction in how much a DVD cost me, because I would have spent that on something else instead. In the case above, I would consider that as $35 spent on DVD's. I do count gift DVD's as zero and I count trades as the amount I spent on the DVD I traded.

I do the same thing, but I don't count that either. For example, I bought 5 AVP sets with busts from BlockBuster for $30 apiece. I've been selling them for about $50, but I don't deduct that $100 from the price of the DVD's I've purchased. I could have spent that money on toilet paper instead. If, however, I trade one of those sets for another OOP DVD, I'll consider the DVD I traded for to have cost $30.

What about if it is a gift card from mypoints? I just used one on Sword of Doom, that i didn't need to buy, I probably would have gotten it as a geft sooner or later, but since i had the GC, i figured i would buy it, does that still count as $25 spent?

Personally, I would treat that as a gift (i.e. free money), but, as someone wisely already pointed out in this discussion, what you consider money spent is all relative. You should keep track how you spend and budget your money and gift cards however you like (so long as it is legal) and makes sense in the real world of buying and selling.

I gave up on my tab in mid-May. I still put in the price in DVDProfiler, but I never look at my running total. Getting into the $1000+ range, and not even being halfway through the year scared the bejeesus out of me. I haven't curtailed my spending habits at all, and I know I buy a lot of stuff, but I'm gonna just be blissfully ignorant of how much I really spend from now on.
